Sermon preparation help with favourite commentaries
Hi everyone,
Like many other folks here I'm sure, I use logos for sermon preparation. At the minute I'm doing a series on 1 Thessalonians. I have 2 questions.
1. Using passage guide, I can access all of my Logos commentaries on 1 Thessalonians. That's good for my initial preparation but, as I move through the series, there are some commentaries I don't want to take time reading because I haven't found them helpful. Is there a way to set up the passage guide so that it excludes the commentaries I no longer want to check?
2. Again using passage guide, when I click on a commentary it opens to the right place in a separate pane. This is an amazing feature! But perhaps I am missing an even better one. I am wondering if there is a way to open all of the commentaries without having to click on them individually.

Hi Colin
If you create a collection of the Commentaries that you find useful you can set the Commentaries tab (using Settings) to show just that collection.
I am not sure that your second idea would turn out to be useful.
If you only have two or three commentaries in you collection the time saved would be minimal.
If you have many commentaries you will need to have them in tags and then opening them from the tag will be little different from opening them from the Passage Guide.

In addition to Mike's excellent suggestion I would like to point out that you can also customize the passage guide by removing the commentaries that you did not find helpful and by adding a star to commentaries that are very helpful. Logos automatically saves the passage guide on that particular passage.

On number 2, yes I would want to open lots of commentaries so there would be a significant time-saving/click saving. An 'open all' feature would really help me.

You may have already done this, but just in case you haven't, don't forget to prioritize your favorite/most helpful commentaries in your library. By doing this you will ensure that the commentaries you want populate the passage guide in the order of your preference.

I would concur with the other suggestions and add another - create a custom 1 Thess Series study Layout (you can have several commentaries saved in the location, tabbed and ready to go). Then, save the layout as a shortcut to your top toolbar area. Then, one click and you have your study layout and specific books, guides, and tools right where you want them When you’re done, you can update the layout and return where you left off for next time.
If you have many commentaries, then I’ve always preferred Mark Barnes commentary collection rules to help distinguish commentary by “type” to help me save time by finding the type of commentary I want, and Keep Smiling’s method of adding custom titles by “published year/series/author/bible book” to help further identify the commentary I want and don’t want. It is not openin. All the commentaries, but categorizing is helpful and saves time by distinguishing something you possibly don’t want.
