I've started reading "Story of the Bible World" by Nelson Beecher Keyes. (Hardback)  It was first published in the late 1950s.

Has anyone read it or could comment on how reliable it is?   Have there been discoveries in the last 70 years that would mean this resources is not particularly recommended now?

It is likely as reliable as it was... Reader's Digest books are popular and do not necessarily take in either the best or most current scholarship. I am unfamiliar with this book but there are no ground or faith shaking discovers that have been made in the past decades.. It is very true there have been numerous great discoveries but nothing that would make me say a book that age is not worth reading.  From very brief research it appears very elementary but if you have it at hand i would suggest read it and enjoy.
