Bug: L8.2 B1 implementation of VF for new Highlights & Notes
L8.2 in beta 1 introduces a new implementation of the VF visibility:
"Notes Tool
- Only relevant Notebooks are shown in the Visual Filters list."
While this sounds like a nice idea - especially for those with many notebooks etc -, the implementation is buggy (or not thought through), as it does not provide for new highlights or notes.
Steps to reproduce (repeatable every time):
- Open a book with no highlights or notes present, such as a newly acquired one.
- Select text
- Highlight he text (e.g. with a keyboard shortcut such as Y for yellow highlighter) or use right-click context menu to Add a note
- Result: no highlight or note indicator will be shown - this is due to the fact that the VF does not have the respective Notebook (in this case "No Notebook") marked as to be shown. I think this was the default case in 8.0 and 8.1 as well, and it confused me more than once, and some other forum users as well. Pre-8.2 one would open the VF menu, select the un-checked notebook and check it for display. With the new "feature", this is no longer possible.
(in the book to the left I have highlighted with the Y keyboard shortcut and added a text note via context menu, but expanding the VF "Notes and highlights" will not work)
- Expected result: Adding a note by selection (including a highlight) to a resource automatically turns on the VF for the respective notebook in this resource
- Viable workaround would be: reintroduce behavior from Pre-L8.2
- Existing workaround (not sufficient for stable channel): go to another resource which has highlights or notes in the same notebook, thus showing the notebook in the VF. Turn on display in all appropriate resources, this will include the book from before (but not all books, thus it remains possible to repeat the bug just like above).

I've got a bug filed, as a workaround they will show up if you close and reopen the resource, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks! Also the additional workaround is much nicer for the time being!

It seems this has been fixed in Beta 2:
"No Notebook" is preselected as a VF to display, and adding a highlight to another notebook will automatically show the highlight and will add it to the ones to be displayed in the VF menu. Looks like it now works as it should!
