Search Issue
This morning I was wanting to look up the context of a passage that I already knew the reference too, but I thought "I'll just run the search and bring it up quicker" since I didn't know what volume it was in. Oddly, the search turned up empty.
I manually went and found what I was looking for and then copied and pasted the section I had attempted to search to see if I had written something wrong... No, the copy and paste of the sentence from my resource couldn't be found in my resources when I ran a search.
The sentence in question is this: "Nor when injured injure in return, as the many imagine; for we must injure no one at all" - the source is The Dialogues of Plato, vol 2, B. Jowett (or Crito 49)
When running the search with quotation marks, nothing comes up. When running the search without quotation marks, too many returns are given and I cannot sift them all right now to see if the resource in which this quote appears is returned in the search.
Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas? It's a bit frustrating to think that I may not be able to find something that I in fact have in my library.

The search with quotes works fine for me but hit was in
Origen, Philocalia 15.8

Robert, you say that the return you got was Origen. Do you have the Plato resource in question? Mike also got the Origen return, but doesn't have the Plato resource.
I don't have the Origen resource, but it did show up as a return in the bookstore section of the search. Here is a picture of my results. I've highlighted where there should be library returns (I get a return in my notes, because I have a note with the quote):

So I ran other searches from other phrases and sentences in the same resource, and right around the sentence in question, and all of these turned up correct search results.
It seems I was unlucky enough this morning to need to find one of the few sentences that somehow wasn't indexed?

Yes I own the Dialogues of Plato volumes but they do not show up in the search

It may be stating the obvious, and I don't know if this is the issue in your case. When you search using quotation marks, the search string must match the way it is written in the resource(s) with expected hits.
For example:
In this screen shot I searched for a sentence I know is in the ESV Study Bible because I copied it from there.
However in this search I left out the "a" just before cruel. It returns no hits
I try to avoid using quotation marks in my searches. When I do use them, I try to limit the quote to a short phrase rather than an entire sentence or statement.

For me at least, in this specific case, I also tried copying the search string from the resource itself.
I performed the in-line on that specific resource using the text copied from the same resource and still did not get a hit. Only when I shortened the search string to the end of the sentence (and used quotation marks) did I get a positive hit.0 -
Thanks, Fred. As I mentioned, after looking up the reference manually I copied the sentence from the resource and then pasted it into the search engine, so there was an exact match.

When I run the search - using the string you posted in your orginal post - I do get the results from the Plato resources you were expecting
I am running Logos 8.8 beta 1 but I wouldn't expect that to make a difference.
To check if it is an indexing issue you could try just reindexing the specific resource - use the command "reindex dialogues of plato, vol. II" in the command box

I don't see how these results could be due to an indexing issue.
I don't have any resources with this phrase. But Bookstore reflects the same issue, and only returns The Dialogues of Plato (2 resources) with the second search, whilst the Quotations from Plato is returned in both.
So, it would appear to be an indexing issue (the software) as opposed to a problem with your local indexing.
EDIT: I posted a bug report in the Logos 8 forum.

That's interesting, this bug must be fixed in 8.8

The Bookstore result is the same in 8.8 Beta 1.

I've just tested it on 8.7 SR-2 and get the same results
So I don't think 8.8 is going to fix this
I would try reindexing the resource as suggested above - although I do note that others are seeing the same issue!

I reindexed Vol. II of Dialogues of Plato and still have the issue.
Also, removed them all from my desktop, rebooted, downloaded them and waited for them to index. Still get same results.

Can you enable diagnostic logging and post logs after running the search and then closing down Logos?
Details at https://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging

I am doing a Rebuild Index now so it will be a while before i can post logs.

If Dave is correct, Rebuild index will not correct the problem

How do you explain that Graham gets the correct results?

I look at it slightly differently[:)]
The results I am getting are the results that we should all be getting!
Hence the request for logs to see if those indicate any problem in the search function.
I do agree it is strange that multiple people are seeing the same problem.

okay, i still have the same issue. here are the log files

I can reproduce the inability to search for "Nor when injured injure in return, as the many imagine; for we must injure no one at all" (or just "Nor when injured injure") at https://ref.ly/logosres/dialoguesplato2?ref=Plato.Pl.%2c+Crito+49&off=837&ctx=%0aCr.+Certainly+not.%0a~Soc.+Nor+when+injure
The bug only occurs when using the new search engine: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/133612.aspx
I've filed a bug report.

For reference I have the new search engine enabled but still get the expected search results.
Very strange!

This isn't actually the resource containing the quote - it is "Laws (English)" which doesn't contain this quotation.

That's a necessary, but not sufficient, condition. It only reproduces in very particular edge cases. This will be fixed in an upcoming release:

Fair enough
