I am trying to prioritize my dictionaries and the New Interpreters Dictionary does not appear in my lexicons list. Or at least I don't see it there.  How do I list it as a prioritized dictionary?

The NIB is topically indexed, so it goes with Bible dictionaries rather than lexicons. I have the Bible dictionaries (e.g. Lexham Bible Dictionary, Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary, and the like) prioritized in a group just below lexicons. If you have the NIB near the top of Bible dictionaries it should show up near the top in a topic search. Have I understood your question?

This is called a dictionary in its title, but most probably you'll find it under type:encyclopedia in your library (like ISBE)

EDIT: in order to classify their types, FL some years ago made the decision to have

  • type:lexicon for original language resources (like BDAG),
  • type:dictionary are current language resources (like OED, MW) and
  • type:encyclopedia are topical resources (like all the different "Bible Dictionaries", ISBE and everything else with topical headwords)

When I try to prioritize my resources Dictionaries are not listed among my types.  Have I somehow eliminated that from my choices, and if so, how do I get it back?  I don't see it among any of my resources to prioritize......

NB Mick is right. Logos categorizes Bible dictionaries as encyclopedias in the 'type' column of the library but refers to them as 'dictionaries' in search results. In any case, you don't need to worry about the category name. The prioritization pane is somewhat confusing. It is often recommended that you place Bibles at the top of the pane, followed by lexicons, followed by Bible dictionaries or encyclopedias, followed by commentaries. Grouping them this way makes it a bit easier to see the order in which you have prioritized resources in each category. Logos will automatically use the prioritization in search results. For example, I have the Anchor Yale Dictionary, the NIB and the Lexham Bible Dictionary as the first three Bible dictionaries or encyclopedias in my prioritization list. If I do a topic search on Ephesus, for example, they will appear as the first three results in that order.

If what you mean is that the Dictionaries section has been deleted from the Topic Guide, just go the 'Add' dropdown at the top right of the guide and add it back in.

If this is still confusing, let me know, and I'll reply with some screen shots.

I actually thought I had done that, but this time, after your prompt, I did it again and there it was. Thank you for your assistance.  Not sure why all those dictionaries are listed as encyclopedias, but whatever!....

I don't work for FL, so I don't have the inside story, but if you search your library for type:dictionary you will see only English language dictionaries.

Bible dictionaries are more like encyclopedias than language dictionaries, regardless of what they call themselves. They have extensive articles on a word/place/person/concept etc. rather than trying to give a simple definition (as a dictionary does). I can only guess, but since encyclopedias traditionally are multi-volume works, publishers might have steered away from calling their single volume Bible dictionaries encyclopedias. However, some multi-volume Bible 'dictionaries' are called encyclopedias and some are called dictionaries. Even the publishers can't decide what to call them. Faithlife calls them all encyclopedias. A bit confusing until you know this.

There are actually not many dictionaries in Logos. This search of the shop website has only 8 results, and half of them are false positives... In fact, only English-English dictionaries would make sense to prioritize, i.e. if you prefer MW over OED over Collins or any other order - and where Webster 1828 fits in (assuming it is a dictionary) - if you own more than one of them, if any at all.

I tried to do what you suggested about adding it to the topic guide (not sure if that was an issue or not) but it is not among the list when I go to the "add" dropdown at the top right.  There is no dictionaries in that list.

Correct.

What you'll need to do is

1. Create a Collection with your Bible Dictionary or dictionaries in it.

2. In Topic Guide add "Collections" to the Topic Guide.

3. Hover your mouse over the Collection line in the Topic Guide. The word Settings will appear. Select your Bible dictionaries collection from the drop-down menu when you click on Settings.
