Aside: Match equivalent references
When we were disambiguating personal names from common nouns (Lot/lot, Job/job) and recognizing other grammatical forms of personal names (Jonah/Jonah’s, Hannah/Hannah’s) we looked at two of the three search options that appear in the Resource Panel Menu:
- Match case
- Match all word forms
It is time to address the third, and final, option:
- Match equivalent references
Consider the following closely related searches:
The first search uses the search argument of Preaching Theme ~ Creation.
The second search uses the search argument of Topic ~ Creation.
The third search uses the search argument of Event ~ Creation.
The fourth search uses the search argument of Cultural (Concept) ~ Creation.
The fifth search uses the search argument of Theological Concept ~ Creation.
Each of these search finds different material but with a great deal of overlap. What happens when Match equivalent references is turned on?
The first search using <PreachingTheme Creation> without Match equivalent references found 294 results in 170 articles in 17 resources. With Match equivalent references, it finds 385 results in 226 articles in 40 resources.
With Match equivalent references set, the second search <Topic Creation> generates the same results.
And with Match equivalent references set, the third search <Event Creation> generates the same results.
However, <Culture The Creation> and {Section <LSTO = Creation>} searches do not change with the setting of Match equivalent references.
Match equivalent references here acted much like “<PreachingTheme Creation> <Topic Creation> <Event Creation>” except that the number of references is not “double counted” for results with more than one of the search terms.
If you have a small library, you will likely wish to leave Match equivalent forms on. On a large library, you need to develop a “feel” for when you want it by comparing your results with it set on and set off. If you leave it off, as I do, keep in mind that you should turn it on when you get few results – it widens the search.

Match equivalent references
This is the most quirky of Search options as you are never sure what you will get, except it is mainly Preaching Themes.
I'm surprised you used {Section <LSTO = Creation>}, instead of <LSTO = Creation>. (not that it makes much difference)

Good point. I used what was built and didn't think about what difference Section would make in this context. Glad you mentioned it.
