Sentence Diagrammer shape recognition

Has anyone discovered (or played with) the automatic shape recognition?

Right-click and draw a shape (using a gesture), or use multiple strokes to draw a more complex shape.

What do you think? How good is it at guessing what you meant?

Thanks for letting us know I never would have seen it. It is about 90% at guessing what I want. I wish there was some keystroke (is there?) to switch it to the drawing tool and then back to the select tool.

The drawing tool is great, but it can get a bit cumbersome to click back to the select tool. It sorta undoes the convenience benefit of the tool.

So far initial impressions of the diagramming tool make it seem much better and more intuitive than the 3.0 version.

    THAT'S SO COOL!  [h]

It's accuracy is pretty good, I  noticed that it balks at the lower stilt and just leaves it hand drawn.

Also it doesn't handle "curly braces" { } which is fine since they're not part of the diagrammer yet

    Overall [y][y][y][y][y]

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

I believe "Esc" should take you back to the selection tool.

Also, you can draw by clicking and holding the right-mouse-button, which should leave you in select mode when you let go.

    Works perfectly. Thanks, Bob.

The freedraw works perfectly for most shapes. I can't get upper and lower stilts to work. But those are rarely used. Thank you for including this tool. It makes it very quick to diagram

This is a great feature, its a time saver- just takes a little getting use to- but I like it, thanks.

I found a couple of cases where it doesn't do what I want (or behaves inconsistently). I was trying to manually draw a conjunction graphic.

When I drew it all as one continuous line overlapping itself, it wasn't recognized:

So then I tried drawing it in two pieces. First the square bracket (which worked fine),

    image  imageimage

and then the angle, but this didn't work.

If I tried a left angle bracket, it came out as a simple modifier graphic:

    imageimageimage

If I tried a right angle bracket, it came out as a right curve:

Then I discovered that fortunately drawing something that looks sort of like a conjunction missing its vertical bar works:

It's pretty smart! But not perfect.

    Here is my observation:

The feature works pretty darn well....but..

It just refuses to recognize a curve...it either turns it into what it thinks I want or it just doesn't do anything!

See pic below...but since Bob P is here...I'd like to ask (without offending please )

    Why does this feature exist?

What I mean is; since with one click I can select any shape...why do I want to draw them and have them be created from by scribble? It's not faster....

I can see the pencil for just making notations like "notice this!" or "interesting eh?" but not for recreating what's already there...

Please don't take that wrong, I probably just don't get it...so I had to ask...

    Robert,

I would venture a response based upon my usage.  With my trackpad, I'm finding that I'm able to draw a shape as fast as, if not faster, than the selection and drag process.

    Thomas,

Ok...so speed is one thing...I'm guessing that those with "pads" that use stylus' to actually write will love this feature then....

    Why does this feature exist?

Because it looks cool and was fun for the programmers to write. [H] Since Bob is the one telling us about it, it might have been one of his pet features that he wanted them to do, and he's probably (rightfully) proud of it. It's a fun toy. But as Vladimir Lukyanov pointed out, perhaps there were other higher priority features they should have spent their time on. Ahem. [^o)]

Impossible ... I can at least fake tables now AND do tree diagrams. The next priority is obviously allowing selection of labels on nodes with the ability to limit the labels based upon whose theory of structure you are using.[;)]

I didn't mean the Sentence Diagrammer as a whole (which I agree was important and many people were waiting for it), I meant the automatic shape recognition thingy, which is redundant. You can create all those shapes from the toolbar.

I am eagerly awaiting the ability to block diagram when it is released. I am about to do an extended exegetical series from Philippians and It is about time for me to get started on the diagrams, I was hoping to use this new tool in L4 rather than doing the work in MS Word.

You can do the block diagrams now. When you enter a passage, simply set it to wrapping mode

Redundant, technically yes I agree, gimmick ? Maybe  but I think it provides flexibility in workflow, possibly with the mobile use more in mind,  it gives a different feel to  diagramming, in some ways a bit more like your involved rather than just pressing buttons.  Which approach I will take long term, not sure but I think its a good inclusion and lays a platform for expansion of the diagramming tool down the track ( [:P] ) to allow for even more flexibility.

I appreciate it only will reshape into whats available on the toolbar, would be great if there was some more options there, for instance drawing a triangle would morph into a triangle rather than a square.... more shapes would mean greater flexiblity in the tool allowing the user to be more creative in how they use the tool...but what we've got now is a great start and worth waiting till now to get it. Keep up the good work developers.
