In the 9.6 Beta 2 update, they fixed a bug that caused the Indexer to hang. The notes say "Users might need to manually quit any instances of the indexer to ensure the updated version is active."

How do I manually quit the indexer?

Use Activity Monitor, select the Indexer and choose Quit.
