Highlighting without the pane

Is there a way to highlight without having the highlighting pane open?  It is large and I don't need it just want to highlight some text and press a button, etc. and have it use the defaults.

Not sure Mac works in this area as Windows, but the wiki below shows how to do this in windows:

I have a couple set up with a shortcut that I use a lot. I just memorize the shortcuts so I can highlight without the pane.
