Bug: "Update Now" and "Update Resources" don't work as excepted when Use Internet is off

When use internet is OFF, it can be manually overriden from the command bar. This is good. It means I can type update now, update resources or sync now from the command bar. More importantly for many, it means they can have syncing turned off for privacy reasons, but still have Logos update.

However, there's a bug. With internet turned off, update now and update resources only check for a new program update, they don't check for new resource updates. This is inconsistent and confusing behaviour, and therefore (I assume) a bug.

According to the "Use Internet" setting help (when hovering over question mark in Program Settings), Logos will not connect to the Internet when "Use Internet" is set to "No."  In this forum post, http://community.logos.com/forums/t/14296.aspx, Bradley confirms this:

When "Use Internet" is set to "No", the program will not connect to the Internet. The Help text is correct.

You may be prompted to download updates that were detected during a previous run of the program (when Use Internet was set to Yes). This does not mean that the program used the Internet to detect those updates during this session.

I logged the "Update Resources" command with "Use Internet" set to "No" and found that the correct "Update Resources" function is attempted, but since "Use Internet" is off, but it does not go any further.

The point is that the behaviour is inconsistent. With Use internet off:

    • Sync now will access the internet and sync
    • Update now will access the internet and check for a program update
    • Update resources will not access the internet and check for a resource update (it only checks for a program update)

I've submitted the report that "Sync Now" and "Update Now" commands work with "Use Internet" disabled. However, I'm still finding that "Update Resources" is logging the correct command in the log, although it's not accessing the Internet.

It accesses the internet to get the program update feed, just not the resource update file.

It's actually very useful that they do. A manual over-ride is always useful.

I agree. I like turning Internet off for performance enhancement in some situations. But I want to be able to enter update now and get both the latest program version and updated resources.

I am seeing that now--after entering the command, it is downloading a program update.

I'm confused that update resources checks for program updates!

The more significant behaviour is that the Sign-in window overrides USE INTERNET = No - see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/22907.aspx
All aspects of behaviour of this setting should be examined for consistency and to protect a user's Privacy. If we request a user to start L4 with the Ctrl key for diagnostic reasons (or to obtain logs) that setting should be respected.

Program updates get priority over resource updates, as some resources require certain program versions.

The more significant behaviour is that the Sign-in window overrides USE INTERNET = No

It doesn't really, though it appears to. Remembers there's a sign-in button, and a Work Offline button. Both buttons override the program setting - correctly in my view.

Please explain "it doesn't really" whilst it correctly overrides the program setting.

I assumed that because I was complaining about incorrect behaviour, then so were you. So when you said "it should respect that setting", I assumed you meant that it was incorrect that "Sign In" connected to the internet. I was saying "it doesn't really" behave incorrectly, because that's the behaviour we should expect.

No. I was following your original remark "This is inconsistent and confusing behaviour, and therefore (I assume) a bug.". The thread I quoted showed that a number of people experienced this sense of confusion with Sign In. Work Offline will override the setting but that is expected. If a person is used to working with Use Internet = No, why should they select Work Offline? If they are using the dialogue to generate logs which button do you think will be selected?

"Sign in" should over-ride the program setting, just like "use blank layout" over-rides the program setting. The problem is it's not clear. This could be solved either by:

    • Swapping over the Work Offline/Sign In buttons when someone has Use Internet set to off.
    • And/Or renaming the buttons to something like: "Work Offline" / "Work Online", or "Sign In Online" / "Sign in Offline".
