SESB 4????

I can't see spending over $300 for SESB 3 if it's not fully compatible with L4. Is there any word of an upcoming update? Can we expect an SESB 4 in the near future?

The resources that make up SESB are fully compatible with L4. If you were to buy the boxed product it would come with the L3 engine but otherwise would be fully useful in L4.
I have no inside information, but imagine the upgrade will ship with the L4 engine and perhaps some of the tools that come in the minimal cross-grade to allow full functionality. I think there will also be some new resources that have been developed since the release of SESB 3.0. That said, most of us with Logos 4 really only need the SESB for Logos users unless one wants all the extra Bibles in other languages in the full SESB or does not have the original language resources already.

This is not completely accurate.
In Logos 3 with SESB 3, you can actually go against the BHS/WIVU database, part of the SESB 3 package, from within Logos 3's Syntax Search. You cannot do this in Logos 4. You can browse all the resources, but to me not being able to Syntax Searches is the reason to upgrade to ver. 4 when it comes out.

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't have SESB (yet) so didn't know you could ever do that. Have you heard an explanation for why this isn't in L4?

Well my German is non-existent so it has been hard reading the German-speaking forums, but from what I have been able to glean it's just some sort of database incompatibility with their files that has to be updated for version 4 of Logos - in other words it's an issue to be updated in SESB's product not Logos. Maybe someone else with more specifics, or someone from Logos, will chime in with details...

According to Mr. Hartmann's statement in the German SESB-forums, the German Bible Society is working on an update for SESB to Logos 4. There is no indication on when it will be finished and they are still discussing on what featueres exactly will be part of the update, so I guess we will have to wait quite a time for it. Anyhow, getting the WIVU database to work with Logos 4 is one of the main issues.

I basically got the same response from him in an email today...
Dear Mr. Thompson,
Thank you for your message. Until now, the SESB is not fully compatible with Logos 4. We are considering an update, but have no specific date for it until now.
Kind regards

Does anyone know for sure if the stripped down Logos version of SESB 3.0 includes ALL the currently available Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ) fascicles - Deuteronomy, Megilloth, Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah, Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes, and Lamentations? This is what I really want, since it has all the Masorah notes in it that our electronic version of the BHS fails to include. I'll never understand why they published the electronic BHS without all the notes that are in the published paper version!) Very disappointing!

To me it looks like back when the Greek and Hebrew Bibles were first made into e-books the Bible societies only licensed part of the text, leaving off apparatuses and other marginal notes. Perhaps this was motivated by technical reasons but I suspect that the Bible societies were concerned with e-sales undercutting the print editions. By only giving us the text they force us to buy it at least twice [:(].

Wyn, I assume you mean what is called SESB for Logos Users (18 volumes)? If so, then the answer is yes. It contains the Quinta that one would find in the complete 3.0 version.

SESB4.0 for Logos4 comes in November 2011!
That is good news. I couldn't find an announcement on either the SESB site or Logos, yet.

What's the origin of this good news? I had a look at the SESB-website (sesb-online.de), but no rumors about it there, yet. I'm excited what's going to be in SESB 4.0 besides the already existing resources and the new Syntax search functionality for WIVU under Logos 4.

It is advertised here, they are at least taking orders to reserve a copy. Looks like Nov 15 2011 release!
One note I found:
The SESB (Stuttgart Electronic Study Bible) is the most powerful scientific Bible program in German language. The world-renowned original language editions of the Bible of the German Bible Society with the critical apparatus, and linguistic databases and tools, dictionaries, German editions of the Bible, modern Bible translations in European languages and contains a lot more. In the first SESB 4.0 Logos 4 is used as a new program basis. In addition, the 4.0 SESB supplemented by additional new text editions, dictionaries and German translations of the Bible. For users of previous version 3.0, there are the expanded and improved as a cost-effective SESB 4.0 Update

Thanks for the info, Dominick - I found it as well in the meantime, seems like it is confirmed.

I do not have SESB 3 but have wanted it for some time. I am sure I will be interested in the Logos User upgrade when it comes out.

It will really be nice to be able to use their database for Syntax searching again, like in Logos 3!

I am looking forward to SESB 4. I have SESB 3 and have used it mainly for the Greek Resources, but look forward to using the Hebrew resources more than I have.

Would it be worth it to purchase a minimal crossgrade now or are the resources in it also part of the SESB 4 upgrade? I have SESB 3 and I run the Logos 4 engine currently without a base package or crossgrade (so no syntax search atm).

I suspect the Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft will include things like maps, Biblical People etc. but may exclude some of the Reverse Interlinears, Lectionaries and other resources that are basically intended for the English speaking market - but I really don't know. Since there is a release date for SESB 4.0 already, I guess asking Mr. Hartmann from the Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft could lead to more insight.

Welcome [:D]
For SESB3, may want to install Libronix 3 for SESB Syntax Search and SESB Lemma Search capabilities. Libronix 3 can peacefully coexist with Logos 4.

Observation: Stuttgart Electronic Study Bible (SESB), Version 3.0 (52 vols.) and Stuttgart Electronic Study Bible (SESB), Version 3.0 for Logos Users (18 vols.) have many scholarly language items (and Bibles in many languages), but lack maps, Biblical People, etc.
Wonder about Logos pre-publication for SESB 4 ?
Keep Smiling [:)]

Forgot to mention, I also have Libronix 3 for SESB installed so I'm able to utilize everything that SESB 3.0 has to offer. Still I like the Logos 4 engine/interface a lot better and it runs a lot faster (probably due to the up front indexing of all the resources?).
Just wondering: if I do a passage guide on (for example) Genesis 16 in Libronix, I get some parallel passage results from Synopsis of the Old Testament (Jackson). Why don't I get those in Logos 4?

The full contents of the minimal crossgrade will not be in the SESB4 if SESB 3 is any indication of what is coming. The English Bibles currently in the SESB should still be there. Maybe they will add the ESV?? No telling with just a package shot to go by.

The SESB originally was and still is meant first and foremost for academic usage in Germany and other European countries, as the Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft produces some of the leading original language editions like the NTG (Nestlé-Aland), the BHS and the BHQ, so there will be no major changes there. Maybe some new translations like the German BasisBibel and the Neue Genfer Übersetzung. As Mark already mentioned, it is unlikely that the full contents of the minimal crossgrade will be there, but I guess there will be at least some resources like maps and Biblical People that take advantage of the new possibilities Logos 4 is offering.

Dominick,
Note that in the German-language SESB forum people claim to have received notice that SESB 4 won't be released as announced - the German Bible Society has not commented on that and their official SESB product website still does not refer to SESB 4 at all.
I have ordered the upgrade DVD you referred to above, but I wouldn't bet on receiving it this year.

Thanks for the update Mick, I hope it comes before too long - I am really looking forward to have it properly integrated into Logos 4. It's been a long time coming.

Just today a representative of the German Bible Society answered in the German SESB-Forum. He confirmed
- that SESB 4 as a project is dead,
- that they intend to bring something like a crossgrade to move SESB users from Libronix to L4 in summer
- that they still see SESB as their flagship of bible study resources and will continue to work with Logos.

As always, the information given in the German forum is rather vague - but at least there really is some hope that the German Bible Society is trying to jump on the Logos 4 wagon.

I noticed today that SESB 3.0 (52 volumes) is not for sale via Logos anymore. Does this mean SESB 4.0 is coming now? Has there been any update since the January rumor?

There have been lots of updates:
There won't be a SESB 4 as was planned. Logos now sells http://www.logos.com/product/18617/german-bible-society-bundle and has broken up the former monolitihic SESB so you can have a number of the resources as single items - that's what many users asked for to get access to all the apparatuses etc. See my post in this thread for a comparison spreadsheet that includes links to individual products (as available). If I read the product pages and announcements right, we will get WIVU constituency tree functionality under L4 and some more BHQ books - for free.
Logos really should auto-redirect from SESB to the GBS-bundle.
Have joy in the Lord!
