Side Bar book marks

Sorry if this has been posted before. I searched and couldn't find anything.

I know that these marks are a sort of bookmark. However, my question is what determines the interval between them?

Those represent search results for open search panels and places that you've navigated to and stayed on (I believe the mark shows up in a light color when you've been there for five seconds and then gets darker as you stay there longer).

The interval between them is governed by the same thing that determines the position of the "thumb" in the scroll bar.
