Kevin A. Purcell:

Sadly, Bob, offline access is the one thing that will get this to a 5 star. Until then it is not going to be.  For those of us with either a touch or an iPhone in an AT&T handicapped area (Edge only for me) make this nearly useless away from home or my church's building or wifi hot spots.

It is true, however it is a great beginning. The potential of the program is wonderful. Reading of the other books together with the Bible is great. I give it 5 stars in hope that at least bookshelf is going to be offline soon. Congratulations Logos. It is great you have done it. Keep on in this direction. God bless you.

The iPhone app is amazing. I really would like to see offline access but I'm thrilled that we already have access to so many features. I usually have internet access so I can live in the cloud for the time being. This will be a big asset to my work, especially if the rumors of an Apple tablet come true.

I am also excited for what this app might mean in the way of future web applications. I prefer working from a desktop app but I would love the ability to hop on another computer and access my work through a web browser. Am I reading too much into the cloud features of the app?

Bob or others, if we have specific suggestions for the iPhone app, would/how would you like them submitted?

LOL Kevin,

You cant really be holding Logos accountable for ATT's network shortcomings.. unless Bob bought the company..

I too have Edge and am excited to try app

We'll get there, but we thought you'd be happy to get some basic reading and searching going first. By offloading to the server -- where we can share code we built for the desktop app -- we can offer a lot more power.

Bob,

I'm absolutely delighted with what you have offered to us.

I made the choice not to buy an iPhone for many reasons. But, I did buy myself an iPod Touch in expectation. Are all my expectations met by the program in its 1.0 release? No. Does that matter? No. I'm glad to be untethered from my desk where I have wifi access... That's a wonderful start for which I am grateful.

I do need help though - it's not really intuitive....

It would be nice if there were a way to swap gestures (it seems funny working backwards)

<---- swipe to me means backwards not forwards (ie Prev page/Up)

----->swipe to me means forwards not backwards (ie Next page/Down)

Other than that looks excellent

I apologize if it has been answered but most of the books that I have purchased are not accessible. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the great reviews—looks like the first ones are already posted—so far all 5 Stars!

Get your name in lights too, post a review of our iPhone app!

I am simply amazed. Yes, AMAZED! Now, I have had my iPhone for a month and it is already the best gadget that I have owned; however, Bob and his staff have catapulted it into another hemisphere. Logos on my phone? Wha?? I am just loving reading the GNT right now! Such a fantastic surprise that it showed up tonight. Wow!

Ahhh, Kevin, help a brother (Bob) out and give it a 5.  You know they're good for it!

For that matter, let's ask them NEVER to release ANYTHING until ALL the kinks are worked out of it.   Not.

I like Apples.  Especially Honeycrisp.

AMEN! Look...if you never want to see downloadable content on the Iphone from Logos and speak against the baby steps taken today (personally, I think they deserve more credit then baby steps). Discourage other users from approving the software until downloadable content is available so that fewer people use the software and Bob says...well, if its not going to be profitable I'm not dumping our resources into it. Don't give it 5 stars based upon what you want the app to be. Give it 5 stars based upon Logos' implementation of what they sought to put out. If you think they did a good job creating an app that accesses online resources from your Iphone...give it 5 years.

Under a "it wasn't what I expected banner" nothing will ever get 5 stars from us other then our salvation because we can always dream bigger then we can do.

Wow, the price is right!

Bob Pritchett:
(It's not hard to store your books on the iPhone. It's hard to implement our search engine, data type comparison system, data type parsing/rendering, cross-library searching for Guides, text comparison algorithm, etc. on the iPhone. We'll get there, but we thought you'd be happy to get some basic reading and searching going first. By offloading to the server -- where we can share code we built for the desktop app -- we can offer a lot more power.)

I can't speak for others, but just being able to read Logos books on the iPod/iPhone (plus a simple non-indexed search) would make me happy.  A local implementation of those other searches and comparisons would just be icing on a yummy cake (and would be amazing if you can do it).  So I guess I'm saying that I hope you don't have to wait to implement those searches locally, before you store resources locally.

This is coming from someone who is planning on getting an iPod Touch and doesn't have much WIFI access outside of my home where I can easily use desktop Logos.

You will have to forgive me, but sorry. Can't give it 5 stars.  And no I am not holding anyone but AT&T and Apple accountable for the lack of 3G in my area.  But I am holding Logos accountable for not allowing offline sync. It should not be a huge challenge to allow me to have a small selection of my books available even if my 3g or Edge for that matter are not working.  Until then the app will never be useful enough for me to give it a 5.  Sorry!  Now the minute it does I will give it.

There is also an issue in that one of my books doesn't work when I access it from the reading menu. If I open it manually it works. And then there are a number of other issues that I am seeing.  When I open a book it seems to radonomly open to different places.  I am currently reading MacArthurs The Glory of Heaven and it opens in one place at one  point but then another place at another point.  This is annoying.

I don't want them to not release it. I just don't want them to expect a 5 star rating till it is truly a GREAT! app. At this point it is not what was "promised" when I commented on the other thread. I listed a few things that would make it great and offline was one of them and Bob implied that it would be there.

We're following the iPhone paradigm of "sliding" the thing under your finger. So the <-- swipe slides the page to the left, bringing in the page to the right.

We spent time with almost every other e-book reader on the iPhone and tried to follow the patterns they had established, as well as Apple's guidelines.

(This would be more obvious if we animated the page turn, which we just didn't have time for in the first release.)

FWIW, there's already an updated version of the app, but the way Apple's app store works you can't submit it till your first release is out, or you reset your submission date and have to wait longer for approval. Now that we're approved we should be able to submit the update (Monday, I hope), and I'm told updates generally move through the process faster.

This is just the start; we're still working on getting rights to make as many books as possible available through the iPhone, and we've got a list of improvements we still want to make.

The features that come from the server (the reports/guides/etc.) can be updated on our end, so you'll see some improvements there over time even without an app update.

I don't mean to be rude, I really don't, but for those of you who are disappointed with the app, it is only the FIRST release. As Bob even said, he felt that it would be nice to give us an option to have the basics immediately rather than make us wait even longer for the features we all desire. Also, it isn't as though the app even cost anything, it is free. I get that many of us had hoped it would include sync, our actual library, etc... day one but come on folks, can't we just enjoy it for what it is now and wait for the updates that are already in the works? For me it is a 5 star because of how vastly superior it already is to every other Bible app on the store and for what it promises and already delivers.

i appreciate it for what it is. but given that it's online access only for the time being & i'm not an iPhone user (and don't plan on being one), i'm going to pass on purchasing an iPod Touch, at least until it's able to be used offline because for the way i had anticipated using it, it's not going to work w/o having Internet access.

the way it is right now, all of the places i have wi-fi available, i have my laptop w/me (home, work, church) & can just fire up the desktop app to do my studies/reading. i'll definitely be keeping my eyes on this, but for my needs right here & now, i'm going to have to pass because it wouldn't be a wise purchase.
