I thought we could post useful snippets/pearls of wisdom in here, as a starting point for those with Questions.

Please DO NOT ask questions here (ask in main forum) its only meant as a first point of reference, and also remember that these answers are not (necesseraly) endorsed by Logos.

Q: I have a datacap.. Do I really need to download (x)GB twice for both my main PC and my Laptop?

    A) No, you dont.

    Dave Hooton figured it out

... the standard installation path is:-

    XP - C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Logos4
    Vista/Win7 - C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Logos4

    1. save your L4 resources "...\Logos4\Data\{random}\ResourceManager\Resources"  to an external drive eg X:\L4Resources
    2. download logos4 and run on laptop from (http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/Logos4Setup.exe)
    3. choose Custom installation if you want to install in a folder of your choice
    4. Sign-on
    5. ASAP (when program finally opens) use Program Settings to stop Downloads++
    6. Kill Logos4Indexer.exe in Task Manager (I'm not sure that Pausing will work)
    7. Type Scan X:\L4Resources (where you put them) into Command bar & confirm the command by clicking on the suggestion
    8. Close & Restart L4
    9. Resources will be copied across to the laptop, and Indexing should start(may take a while)

++ if you get a download you should Cancel it

    Hope that helps

Is it a bit of an oxymoron to have a thread about FAQs where we cannot ask questions?  Oh wait.  You asked a question.  I fully believe you are trying to be helpful here but it just struck me as odd.  If only you can ask a question and you already know the answer....  And if we can't ask a question then this thread becomes about questions to which only you ask but to which you already know the answer.

Never mind...way too much caffeine on my end this morning!  Thanks for trying to help!!

lol - just thought if we could keep all the answers together might be easier to locate rather hen lookin through 100 messages to find an answer

Of course!  I actually love the idea.  Thanks for not tearing my head off which I probably deserved!  Your help is appreciated.  This is a great day for Logos.

    Q) Why is my download so big, is it downloading everything?

    A) Logos 4 only downloads the updated resources it needs for Logos 4, if a L3 resource on your system is the latest version and there is no Logos4 optimised version, it does not redownload it again, it pulls that one into the library from your existing L3 resources library and  uses that one

    Q) How do I upgrade the engine to the 4.0 version?
Bob Pritchett said: While the engine will work with your existing books, we strongly encourage you to consider a base package, which will include lots of content especially designed to work well with Logos 4. The people, places, and things databases, the controlled vocabulary, infographics, maps, etc. are all content resources sold as part of the base package.

You can also consider the "Minimal Crossgrade", which includes just the content resources that make Logos 4 shine.

    http://www.logos.com/minimalcrossgrade

Download Standalone Logos4 engine from http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/Logos4Setup.exe

any updated resources will be downloaded as part of the process

This should be a sticky if those exist here. Or else make it part of the help section on the web site.

I wonder what's at the movies this week.

    Q) How do I search for Bible References and Topics in L4

In Logos4 (L4) you need to use Basic Search for these operations.

Select whatever range you want to search (Entire Library or a Collection), then:-

    1. Topic - type your topic and results should appear in a Topic section + normal Library search results below.

You might also get topic links from topics.logos.com

    2. Bible Reference - just type your reference eg. jn 3:1-4 (bible references are automatically recognised by L4).

If you want equality type <=jn 3:1-4>    Note that the angle brackets are needed!

I have yet been unable to do this. I have tried twice to copy my resources to an external drive, and both times I get "Error Copying File or Folder"   "Cannot copy GS_BSAC: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)."

Charlene, a CRC error indicates a problem with the file you are
trying to copy or more often a problem with the media you are copying
from or copying to.  At any rate, it has nothing to do with Logos.

    Q) is anything happening/where are my resources

    1) Dont manually copy any files into Logos4, it just wont work, plain and simple, pointless excercise

    2) Logos 4 looks at you Logos 3 install during upgrade and pulls in anything it needs

    3) Nothing will show until NEW logos4 resources are downloaded and indexing has completed, (this can take 30mins to start given demands on servers currently), look for a blue logos icon doen near clock, will tell you how much is left to download

    4) Be patient

    5) If you do need to use the Scan command RESART YOUT LOGOS4 IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU TYPE IT IN or nothing, and I mean nothing will happen until you do, then be patient, again it can take 15 mins as it checks the resources before showing any signs of action

    Q) My indexing restarts each time I start Logos4 and never finishes..

    A) If you need to switch off your machine while the Indexer is running, can I strongly suggest you hibernate it instead, this way when the machine comes back up indexing continues rather than restarting from scratch.

Damien also suggests turning off automatic updates for windows during this time, might be a wise move BUT remember to turn them back on...[;)]

Hibernating works fine, I tried it accidentally. I would recommend rather to pause the Indexer by the right click and using the "pause for 4 hours" option. Than you can hibernate or shut off your computer and continue indexing after you restart. I have done it many times successfully.

EDIT: After hibernating the time count is stopped. SO when you restart your computer, you still should have almost 4 hours of time of pause. You can restart indexing manually by the right click etc.

I did indeed... But, I recommend setting the Updates to still notify you of downloads or even to download them but not to install them.

Delete it if you can. L4 should go to work and provide a replacement.

    Dom,

Saw the changed startup yesterday but prefer this amendment!

    1. save your L4 resources "...\Logos4\Data\{random}\ResourceManager\Resources"  to an external drive eg X:\L4Resources
    2. download and run Logos4 from http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/Logos4Setup.exe
    3. choose Custom installation if you want to install in a folder of your choice
    4. Sign-in
    5. Cancel the download when it finally starts (it may need a few attempts)
    6. (If necessary use Task Manager to kill Logos4.exe, start Logos4 with Ctrl key down and choose to work offline)
    7. When the program opens use Program Settings to set Automatically Download = No
    8. If running Pause the Indexer and kill Logos4Indexer.exe in Task Manager
    9. Type Scan X:\L4Resources (or where you put them) into Command bar & click on the suggestion
    10. Close Logos 4
    11. Hold Ctrl key down and start Logos4. Choose to work offline
    12. Indexing should start (may take a while)
    13. After indexing completes, restart Logos4 normally
    14. Reset Automatically Download = Yes (advised)
