Question for Macbook Pro owners

I'm looking to buy a new MBP and need advice concerning the 15" versus the 13".  I have three questions.

1)  Does Logos 4 automatically invoke the dedicated GPU or does it use the integrated?

2)  Will Logos 4 use 4 cores (8 pipes) or just 2 cores?

3)  How often does Logos 4 tax the processor?  Is it just during indexing?

Thanks for your help!

    1) Not know

    2) While indexing, Logos 4 can use 4 cores in a Quad Core CPU.

    3) Depends on what being done in Logos 4 (searching, visual filter highlighting, exegetical word by word, etc).  Indexing can be resource intensive for several hours (power adapter plugged in and laptop cooler are a good idea during indexing).

Wiki Logos 4 Mac has "Logos 4 is resource intensive on Mac & PC – benefits from fast processor, graphics, and disk along with adequate memory (i.e. newer hardware since Logos 4 being designed for use over 5 to 8 years)."

    Integrated Intel Graphic

    2)  Will Logos 4 use 4 cores (8 pipes) or just 2 cores?

Not too sure, is there a way to find it out?

    3)  How often does Logos 4 tax the processor?  Is it just during indexing?

Just during the indexing, but it does use quite a bit of memory!

Logos 4 runs quite well on my wife new MBP13"--got it last month--even with the integrated graphics. The caveat is that I upgraded her hard drive from the 5400rpm that comes with it to a 7200rpm Western Digital Scorpio Black.

Thanks for the replies.  So my take is the 15" MBP dedicated graphics card offers no real performance gains over the integrated graphics and the performance gains offered by the quad core versus dual core are mostly realized during indexing which happens primarily once after installation of Logos 4.  If anyone disagrees with this assessment, please chime in.  Thanks again!

I'm looking to buy a new MBP and need advice concerning the 15" versus the 13".

Personally, I find the 15" rather crowded, but then I use dual 23" displays on the desktop. For me, 13" would be practically unusable, but YMMV.

    2)  Will Logos 4 use 4 cores (8 pipes) or just 2 cores?

I believe L4 will use whatever you have available.

I own a 27" with a 17" second screen at home and find myself crowding its workspace with Logos.  Then for class I take my wife's 13" MBP and kick myself for not getting her the 15".  The biggest hastle to me is the vertical scrolling of virtually all documents on her 13".  Its just not large enough!  I think its a curse no matter what screen size you get and its more profitable to learn to love whatever you end up with.

Well, it will offer some performance gains, I'm sure. But I can't say how much. My wife's 13" Macbook Pro (base model) is pretty close in speed (for Logos) to my own quad-core windows laptop (Core i7 720QM).

I'd be willing to bet that between the increased processing power of the 15" (with comes with a quadcore processor standard) and the ATI graphics card, you'll have a quite good machine. Personally, if you can afford the 15", I'd say go for it. If it hadn't been for the fact that my wife prefers the more compact model, I probably would have gotten the 15" for her, myself...

Do we have a sense for the relative improvement 8gb v 4bg of ram would make on the newest 13 inch models? I usually have Logos, Word, Mail, Safari, and one other program open. I'm not certain that 4gb of ram creates a bottleneck for the new machine, but I'm interested in any real experience with the new 13 inch macbooks that others have.

I would say 4GB would be taxed if you have much open within Logos itself and/or run lots of tabs in Safari. I've spent a bit of time watching Activity Monitor. I'd opt for more memory if you need Logos with lots of other apps open.
