The BAR back issues are an outstanding collection and has been extremely useful in my teaching ministry.
Some particular issues that make this collection worth the investment:
- March-April 1994 (this is mislabeled on page link as January-February 1994)--First archaeological evidence of David's existence--"House of David" inscription found at Dan
- September-October 1992--Discover of ossuary (bone box) inscribed with name of Caiaphas, the high priest who presided over Jesus' trial
- September-October 1988--2,000 year old boat found in Sea of Galilee (dubbed the "Jesus" boat because it dates to 1st century)
- March-April 1983--Oldest writing of YHWH and Hebrew Scripture (priestly blessing of Number 6:25-26) found in amulet in Jerusalem

I have not said so yet but I appreciate your posts. They are helpful and bring things to my attention that I have missed. Thank you for this post also. [Y]

Me too! It'd be especially nice to have that 200th edition. It's fabulous.

Apparently I've missed an update somewhere. I bought BAR back when it was first released. My copy has issues from Mar 75- Oct 01. Does anyone know how and if I can update or upgrade to get the later volumes included in this product, e.g. upto 2005? Either from Logos or from the publisher would work, but preferably from Logos. I cannot seem to find that option on either site.
Thanks.

Yes, there used to be an update offered directly from the BAR website around the same time the newest CD came out. I was tempted to buy it but chose not to for one flawed reason. At that time the Logos.com website was offering the new & complete BAR CD for an introductory price. The Logos price for the whole collection was the same price BAR was offering for the upgrade. I just figured if I was going to spend X amount of dollars I would make sure I got the most content I could. So I did not purchase anything then.
Today I can find no mention of an upgrade CD for sale. To my dismay I discover the newest CD with all the extra issues has increased in price considerably. I should have bought it when it was available. Maybe an inquiry to the folk at BAR will reveal a few upgrade CDs are still available for a discounted price. Now it is possible the two CDs are exactly the same and BAR did not want to advertise the fact previous owners were not getting any discount for their former purchase. I don't know.

I wonder if anyone can clarify the difference between the BAR archive: http://www.logos.com/product/1767/biblical-archaeology-review-the-archive and another Logos offering called the Biblical Archaeologist Archive: http://www.logos.com/product/913/biblical-archaeologist-archive
They are both priced around the same level. Do they take significantly different approaches to the archeaology or the Biblical texts? Does one or the other feature better scholarship or have a higher academic standing? Is one more "useful" than the other?

Biblical Archaeologist (BA), now called Near Eastern Archaeology (NEA), is put out by the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) and is a peer-reviewed academic journal. The Biblical Archaeology Review (BAR) is put out by the Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS) and is a popular magazine. They tend to be sold to different audiences. Many academics will publish in both magazines while some will not publish in the Biblical Archaeologist because it is not a peer-reviewed academic journal. For the most part, NEA has more rigid scholarship. That is not to say that the articles in BAR are not accurate, just that they are not peer-reviewed nor are they as heavily footnoted/documented as the articles in BAR. And BAR tends to be more readable. I happen to own and use both. I lean more toward NEA when I am researching a paper and more toward BAR when I am reading for enjoyment.

Is BAR not available for reading on the iPad. Did not see the icon that indicates that it would be iPhone / iPad compatible. Now that is a shame. Wonder if it will soon be available for iPad since Logos is now selling it again?

I agree.
And while we are on the topic, as a subscriber of BAR I so hope they eventually produce an update to this archive. As glad as I am about seeing this back (though you could still buy it on the BAR website), it's seven years out of date.
While we are on the topic, does anyone know what is going on with the Bible and the Spade? Galaxie used to update these, but now it appears that Associates for Biblical Research now produce it, but it has only been brought up to 2008.
This was one of the advantages of Galaxie. Get the update from them and you got an update from a bunch of journals all at once. Now with Galaxie, Bible and Spade, Themelos, JBL, BAR, etc., you have to keep track of each item and it's renewal. It would be kind of cool of Logos had an annual package update deal where you get it all in one go, but I imagine that is pretty much impossible with all the differing arrangements with publishers.

If you want an update, you really need to email the publisher. I contacted them last February and was told, "We are unable to do an updated CD with LOGOS at this time as the cost is
prohibitive but we do have our publications available online in the BAS
Library membership program.""The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected."- G.K. Chesterton

I really do hope BAR can stay in business. I thoroughly enjoy this magazine.
I wished there was a way where they could license out the old issues (like three years or more) to Galaxie or Logos to tag and sell on.
