Characters in small squares

Recently I was browsing the Smith's Bible Dictionary for "partridge" for Sunday School.. and noticed some strange characters (small squares).. and this happened to some other articles too.. why..?

Partridge (Heb. kôrê) occurs only 1 Sam. 26:20 and Jer. 17:11. The "hunting this bird upon the mountains," 1 Sam. 26:20, entirely agrees with the habits of two well-known species of partridge, viz.,  the Greek partridge (which is the commonest partridge of the holy land), and  Our common partridge,  does not occur in Palestine. (The Greek partridge somewhat resembles our red-legged partridge in plumage, but is much larger. In every part of the hill country it abounds, and its ringing call-note in early morning echoes from cliff to cliff alike amid the barrenness of the hills of Judea and in the glens of the forest of Carmel.—Tristram’s Nat. Hist. of Bible. The flesh of the partridge and the eggs are highly esteemed as food, and the search for the eggs at the proper time of the year is made a regular business.—Ed.)

We have seen such cases before in this resource, I think, and these could be attributed to errors in the resource: it looks like there is an original text in Latin that is not displayed correctly (maybe formatted in a non-unicode Latin font). Most probably you can't do anything except logging a typo and hoping that Logos updates the resource.

Which is good to hear. The resource hasn't been updated since 8 Aug 2002 which probably means, along with many others, that it was the victim of a conversion from the Logos 2 format to L3 format --> I still have 74 resources modified in 2002.

Problem with squares also exists in article on Laodicea.

You'll find the other thread where we discussed the problem with Latin characters here: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/38216.aspx - the Latin-language font "TransRomanAH" seemed to be the culprit of the non-displayable characters.

I'm not seeing this. Here's a screen shot from the article you quoted (I don't see boxes in the quote from the article in my browser either).

NOTE: In Program settings > Fonts > Default Font I have "Default" selected. Often the issue you describe is a font issue, where a font selected does not fully support a unicode character in the text and outputs a place-marker (from within the font) instead.

Btw, I'm on 32bit Win7. I'm seeing the squares if I toggle the default font to any other installed font (tested Arial, Times New Roman, more than half a dozen random ones including Greek and non-character ones like LibronixSymbol:

This tells us, that the Latin text isn't formatted as "default". Libronix btw. (or the Microsoft rendering engine in IE) seems to replace the font with an installed one, i.e. I can see the text there and copy it over to e.g. Word.

Do you just happen to have this TransRomanAH font installed, maybe from other bible software?

Legacy font encoding: GraecaII, SemiticaDict, TransRomanAH and/or TransRomanDict fonts1

Compiled conversion tables are included here, which map GraecaII, SemiticaDict, TransRomanAH and/or TransRomanDict data to Unicode and vice versa.

Note that several of these fonts contain characters that probably do not exist in any one font. These mapping files have only been minimally tested. Feedback is requested (see the readme file which is part of the download).

Yes I do have TransRomanAH installed in my fonts directory. I don't have any other Bible software installed, nor have I had it installed in the past on this machine. I don't remember how I handled transferring fonts from my previous machine to this one (Win7 64 bit).

I installed the TransRomanAH fonts that I found on an older computer, and it does fix the problem.

After scouring the internet, no one seems to claim ownership of those fonts. Seems we're the only ones even talking about them. So here they are:

NEVERMIND...I'm going to assume that Linguist's Software is responsible, even though I can't find TransRomanAH on their site:

When the resource gets fixed to use only Unicode fonts, we won't need them anymore.

Probably not in 1 or 2. I wasn't using Logos at that time and I seem to recall having it though I didn't currently have it since I had gotten a new computer. When I first started using Logos they were using Greekall (?) which was a legacy font (i.e., non-unicode).

Now that I think of it a bit, I think it was spelled Grecall.

Maybe you remember Graecall (thats how the SIL site spells it) and yes, this and TransRomanAH are both non-unicode fonts, that's why SIL now seems to offer conversion tools for these. At least in the resource we are discussing here, last changed in 2002, Logos used TransRomanAH for Latin text. I don't know when Libronix (Logos 3) came around, but by choosing IE as its presentation layer, Logos seemingly avoided the need for issuing fonts - thus I can read Smith's entry on this biblically rare bird perfectly well.
