"Non-versified" books in collections

Greetings all:

I have created about 6 different collections of commentaries to use with searching and My Passage Guide.

However, several of the non-versified books do not seem to show up when I am using Passage Guide to search in the collection I have specified.

For example, I have added William Ramsay's Historical Commentary on the Epistles to the Corinthians to a collection I call "exegetical". When I open My Passage Guide and enter 1 Corinthians 3:2, it does not show Ramsay's book. (Ramsay's book on Galatians will show up in My Passage Guide.) The only difference I can see is the first book is not versified while the second is.

Is there a way to use "non-versified books" in My Passage Guide?

I wouldn't think so… the passage guide depends upon the versification…

Yes, but it is not as good as for resources with a Bible index.

Create a collection of your non-versified books, then create a "collection type" section in your PG and add the collection to it.

Running a PG will then return results for any resources in that collection which includes the verses specified.

You may well get multiple hits if the resources include that reference in many places.

Would those results just be similar to doing a search for that verse? If your passage guide was for a range, would it pick up a verse in the middle, or does it need to be an exact match?

Ouch! Given that I have so many commentaries and a significant portion of them are not versified this will be a bit of a task.

I created a collection as you suggested. Your suggestion worked best if I only searched by entire chapters with Passage Guide.

I have two additional questions:

1. If a book is already in a collection of versified books, why will it not be found? As far as I can tell, the only difference between commentary collections and the nonversified collection is the nonversified collection only has non-versified resources.

2. Is there an easy way to get a list of the nonversified resources that are Bible commentaries/lectures?

It picks up verses within the range

I have just run a PG against Matthew 1:18-25 and looked at my Collection of Illustrations.

It found one which references "Matthew 1:20, 24"

The "Commentary" section in PGs works against Bible indexes - so if a book in the collection which is referenced in that section is not versified it wouldn't be used.

2. Is there an easy way to get a list of the nonversified resources that are Bible commentaries/lectures?

If in your library you enter the filter string

commentary ANDNOT type:"bible commentary"

you will get a list of all resources which are tagged with the word "commentary" but are not of type "bible commentary" (i.e. have a Bible index)

This type of approach is the best I can think of

I started with your string and have edited to:

commentary ANDNOT type:(commentary, "bible commentary", apparatus, bible, calendar, encyclopedia, journal, lexicon) ANDNOT tag:”Study Bible”

I want to try to refine the collection.I am still thinking about ways to tighten up the string to get weed out additional resources that will not yield much.

if you are down to a few resources you want to exclude you can drag them to the appropriate area of the collection tool.

I did begin excluding resources. However, I am still trying to identify some "grand unifying theme" in the subject field. My problem is my brain may not be big enough to do that. If we could convert Stephen Hawking, he may find the grand unifying theme <GRIN>
