Video tutorial: Creating collections

I've made a video that demonstrates some of the more advanced ways of creating collections. It assumes a basic knowledge of collections, and covers search syntax in the collections pane, showing how to create true dynamic collections without relying on adding/removing individual resources. It concludes by giving the example of a dynamic collection of commentaries on John's gospel, which automatically excluding commentaries on John's letters.

Excellent work on showing us how to create collections.

I did have one comment as it pertained to your last collection example on John. To make things simpler (less redundant) I chose this as my querie: type:commentary AND (title:john OR subject:john) ANDNOT 1st, 2nd, 3rd, epistles, "1 John", "2 John", "3 John", Revelation

Thus, my question would be: what is the advantage of the redundant "subject:" in the ANDNOT section.? Would I be missing anything dynamically down the road. Seems to be I wouldn't but thought you might give me (and others) some insight.

The big problem is the decription field which can often contain references to other biblical books. On my system your search string would exclude both the ICC and WBC commentaries on John. I can't tell why the ICC is excluded, but the WBC is excluded because it's description field contains the word revelation: "a committment to scripture as divine revelation". Better safe than sorry, and include the subject in my view.

Will this suggestion doesn't work, another user on another thread suggested the following, which is shorter but does work:

type:commentary AND (title:john, subject:john) ANDNOT subject:("1
John", "2 John", "3 John", "John, 1st", "John, 2nd", "John, 3rd",
revelation, "epistles of john")

Perhaps this would be a bit more simple if Logos could create a searchable field specific to each book of the Bible for each commentary. Something like this:

Type: Bible Commentary, Matthew
Type: Bible Commentary, Mark
Type: Bible Commentary, Luke
Type: Bible Commentary, John
...
Type: Bible Commentary, 1 John
Type: Bible Commentary, 2 John
Type: Bible Commentary, 3 John
Type: Bible Commentary, Jude
Type: Bible Commentary, Revelation

OR, MAYBE (if this is a Boolean term <grin>) there could be more consistency with the names of the subject fields so that 3rd John appears only as 3rd John ANDNOT John, 3rd; OR III John; 3 John; OR John, third; OR ...

There seems to be a raft load of subjects for the general epistles

commentaries.--John, 1st)
N.T.-- 1st John
etc., etc., etc.

Yes, Chuck, consistency within the subject metadata is very important and sadly lacking. The new collections feature has exposed this problem, which has been around since Logos 2. Hopefully they will address this in the future.

And this is the ultimate for brevity:-

type:commentary (title:john,subject:john) -subject:("1 John","2 John","3 John","John,1st","John,2nd","John, 3rd",revelation,"epistles of john")

although this is more readable (with spaces after commas):-

type:commentary (title:john, subject:john) -subject:("1 John", "2 John", "3 John", "John, 1st", "John, 2nd", "John, 3rd", revelation, "epistles of john")

You can use - for ANDNOT in searches (as well as , for OR and space for AND).
