BUG: Logos 5.1a Beta 3 (Mac OSX 10.8.4) must be "Force Closed" EVERY time

I alluded to this problem in a freeze at shutdown post. I think I have identified the problem. Every time I open Logos, it tries to sync with the servers at Logos and my temp shoots up and fans kick in and it just sits there. I can still use the program (somewhat slower, though) and when I try to exit the program, it just sits there on the sync window. I can click "Exit Now" and that screen will close, but Logos never closes. I have attached my logs. This is very annoying. [:|]

I have this issue, but intermittently. Out of curiosity... Can you open to a blank layout, open a few resources (but not a saved layout) and then try to close the app?

That seemed to work until I closed the program and reopened. It opened to a blank layout, so I chose the last closed layout from the Layouts menu and it seemed fine. I shut down the program and started it back up and boom... still trying to sync. I have a default layout I like to use which has my most used Bible translations and commentaries open along with a guide that I have created. I want this layout to open at every start. But doing so causes me to have to "Force Quit" every time because of the program hanging at sync. It shouldn't be doing that.

I also have this problem on an intermittent basis. This beta will go unstable very easily for me and then I must also do a "force close". It usually go unstable in the midst of doing some highlighting.

Sometimes layouts become corrupted and need to be rebuilt from scratch. Other times, a layout may have something in it which causes a problem for Logos (such as wildcard searches). Either one of these problems MAY be your problem, which is why I wanted you to try loading to a blank layout. Since that <seemed> to help, it might be worth trying to build a new layout and see if the issue resolves itself. Make sure to build it from scratch.

I did do that... putting everything back on my screen that I had in the first place from scratch. It synced fine the first time. However, the next time, it got hung up again while syncing. According to my log files, it looks as though it might have something to do with the notesapi. I'm not sure... Thanks for the suggestions. I will try adding things one at a time and see if I can trigger it.

From your error log, it looks like it might be related to community notes attached to the NIV11 via faithlife:

The request timed out so is not conclusive in terms of the issue. A logos.log will be more helpful after enabling logging.

The link in my signature line takes you to step by step instructions, along with a helper app from Logos. It is very easy.

Ok, here are the zip files with logs. The first one listed is from the "sampled" button. The second is the archived log. Thanks so much for helping guys. I appreciate it.

There are some time gaps in the log and the most significant error is:-
ApplicationUtility | SQLite Error 28: multiple links to file: /Users/jedwards1981/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/r30z1nzx.wc3/LibraryCatalog/catalog.db
I'm not certain what this means. Did you trash the Logos4 app when you upgraded to Logos 5? Any file utility programs running that could access this file?
Otherwise we should let Logos investigate this.

I upgraded to Logos 5 a day or 2 after it hit the market (last November, I think.) This is the first trouble I've had with it locking up every time I close the program (except for one known bug with layouts that occurred with an earlier v5 beta, which was resolved with a subsequent beta and final release). This error just started in the last week. I know for a fact I haven't had v4 on this computer since November. So I can't imagine why that would cause the problems. I've been having some other issues with this computer (software related)... it's been almost 2 years since a complete format and reinstall. I'm thinking it may be time, but, I'll wait until I hear something from Logos. Thanks for your help.

I think that is best at this point. Hopefully someone will chime in soon.

Ok, seeing as how no one at Logos acknowledged this I took it upon myself to fix my problem. [:O]
Here's what I ended up doing... deleting Logos completely from my hard drive. [:(]
Ok, ok... so I did reinstall it all from scratch but only to the latest stable release. I think I'm done with betas for a while. [;)]
I'd still love to hear what Logos thought the problem was. If it's something on my end, at least let me know so I can fix it and I might go back to the beta releases. Thanks!

If having to "force close" every time was your only issue, I don't know if I'd do a full reinstall... You probably also don't want to read the several threads of people on stable who have the same issue. [:s]

Well, it's done and over with. Honestly, if my school didn't require us purchasing Logos I don't know that I would have ever bought the program. It is WAY TOO SLOW on a Mac. I can open and have a search done in Accordance before Logos ever gets to the home screen. :-)
Don't get me wrong, the program has gotten better since v.5 but it just doesn't have that Mac feel... and doesn't have the "snappiness" either. I'm not totally disappointed as I have several titles in Logos that I don't have in Accordance and vice versa; I use both because of that reason.

Sorry to be a pest, but I would really like someone from Logos to comment on this thread. I updated to the release candidate and it immediately started freezing at close again. I know for a FACT this is related to syncing. So, what's a man to do about this? :-)

This is really not a fair comparison. You cannot even open Accordance to a home screen, so you really cannot compare the speed of opening the applications. In Logos Preferences, change the opening preference to something other than Home Screen. That will speed opening considerably. However, Accordance still will be somewhat faster than Logos, but Logos has more going on than Accordance does. Whether this is good or bad depends on the user. I use both, but Logos gets far more mileage.

This morning, I sent an email to the top of the Chain of Command at Logos requesting that someone look into the multiple threads reporting this problem. So far, I have not heard back.

I've been disappointed with the overall lack of response to the many similar Mac issues, so truly hope this will elicit a reply.

We posted at near the same time. My post just prior to yours noted that Martin Potter had responded.
Martin Potter said:There is still an active case for this issue and we continue to make changes that should reduce occurrences of this issue. As noted in this and the referenced threads, this issue is inconsistent, with some users experiencing it often and others occasionally, if at all. This makes the task of tracking down the exact cause more difficult and a fix for one problem may not necessarily fix them all. Continuing to provide logs and a sample of the process when this occurs helps us to narrow down what the occurrences have in common. We appreciate your understanding and continued assistance with this issue.
However, it does seem amazing that, with such wide-spread freezes, Logos cannot seem to have reproduce the problem. We still face the same problem that the development team seems more interested in producing new features than in fixing the ones that already exist. It is also amazing that it took such drastic measures to get any response from Logos.

The issue has been sporadic for me, and I would be hard pressed to reproduce it on demand… but it certainly has effected me for a while now.

That's just it... the problem is NOT sporadic for me. It happens every single time I close the program. But, of course, I'm running the release candidate. This has only happened with the beta channel for me.

I'm not convinced that your issue is the same as others... but it could be. I wish a Logos tech would comment on your logs...

Ok, I think I've tracked down what is causing it. Someone said earlier (alabama24) that the FaithLife api was having trouble connecting. I removed that resource from the layout (FaithLife Study Bible), removed all layouts that had that resource in it, and restarted (having to force close, of course). After reboot, it synced right up. I pressed sync several times and it synced like a champ. Closed the program, no problem. Closed beautifully. So, just for kicks, I added the FaithLife Study Bible again and, BINGO, sync froze up again. Had to force close. Repeated earlier steps to remove the FaithLife Study Bible and now it syncs without a problem... so far, so good. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it happens again. Guess I won't be using the FaithLife Study Bible for a while; at least until they fix it. [:)]
Thanks for all of your help, guys! I just hate Logos never chimed in on this one.
