Do You know of any commentary set that is similar to the Wiersbe BE-series (small-group homiletic) (the NT set is called The Bible Exposition Commentary) from which Logos sells individual volumes for not much more than $9-$16 a volume or that can be found cheap as printed matter? And a little better or more recent than Wiersbe?

The text below is mainly just explanation of the circumstances:
Like I've explained in the threads: Should I purchase a few books for some future friend? <-- link goes to second newest post and semi-adv. 1Pt&Jude commentary with history of interpretation?, the purpose is to discuss some part of the Bible with a friend. I was thinking of a few different purpose/level commentaries on for example two books or Epistles of the NT, preferably on short ones so that it's easier for both of us to memorize the whole Bible book - I suppose that would make it easier to discuss?

I'm weighing my options, as You can see from the Christianforums discussion: Thanks for the advice...

The Believer's Church Bible Commentary would be an interesting option as I'm an Anabaptist, I'm just not sure how good they are and they are slightly too expensive. (I have a couple of volumes from that set - I tried to choose good ones on books of the Bible on which I really needed commentaries.)

You might look at the New American Commentary - not too technical, helpful for prepping sermons and Bible studies in my experience. I think most of the volumes are around $15 individually. Like any commentary set the quality varies from volume to volume but some, like George on Galatians, are excellent.

Edit: It appears that only some of them are in the $15 range. The rest are around $20.

Tom Wright's ____ for Everyone series is pretty good.

I really don't want the Apocalypse (Revelation) volume, so would have to wait for it the upgrade) to be split up in individual volumes:

Tom Wright's ____ for Everyone series

EDIT: Please advice me if there is a better commentary than Wiersbe BE-series or Believer's Church Bible Commentary on Philippians and Jude!
(I've changed my mind a little, I'm no longer interested in 1 Pt.)

I would personally recommend the "Preaching the Word Series" - Their outlines are sometimes all you need to get your wheels turning, but reading the manuscripts is good.  Also "The Outline Bible" is good for sermon ideas(which appears on the commentary section during a passage guide search).  Other commentaries are: The Preacher's Commentary and Focus on the Bible Commentary.

    Blessings!
