Comments about Tyndale Commentaries - Particularly Daniel?

Anyone use these often? What are the drawbacks please? What constraints does D.A. Carson refer to in his review please? Is the Book of Daniel commentary from this set worth perusing for my upcoming Sermon series (I keep wondering if I will ever get to the loose peripheral Daniel books I bought in too great a number now....giving preference to the voluminous Daniel studies I have in Logos at my fingertips instead).

I am surprised this set cannot be broken up? What set of commentaries would one or any of you go to first instead of these (for someone else within Logos as a commentator suggested he would go elsewhere for starters)?

I have seen these in the local Christian bookstore and thought I might consider getting what I need as I need it. Preaching a series for the first time and looking for general background and non-boring stuff for congregation too.

I've just finished a sermon series in Daniel and Joyce Baldwin's commentary on Daniel in the Tyndale series was one of the top ones I looked at each week. Seemed to be very clear and thorough exegesis of the book with good historical background details.

I originally was going to pass on Tyndale in Logos but it was far better than keeping and using bound copies. There was a sale on the set and I jumped on it. Tyndale's strength is in succinct comments so you get the big picture. Sure you can go deeper and you should while studying, but your listeners cannot be expected to grasp fine details that don't apply to their lives.

I'm new to this set, but it's rapidly become one of my favourites. I guess the main drawback is its brevity when compared to other commentaries. However, for me, that's one of its strengths. It's a great starting point when looking at commentaries on a passage. It will give you a solid treatment of a passage without having to wade through pages and pages, and is a great starting off point if you then want to pursue your passage in more detailed commentaries. That said it is robust enough that it can be your only commentary stop, depending on your use.

I used the logos version rather than physical book. I got it a few years ago when it was still being published on cd-rom (so that must be quite a few years ago!).

Everyone who has responded...thanks so much. My bivocational, hard-working, patient, gracious, kind, pastor rarely uses commentaries but I am so new to preaching and learning....and wet behind the ears as some (not him) might say. God willing, I will prepare a 3 sermon series in Daniel worth listening to. Our Father God and faithful Daniel deserve it. Imagine seeing/hearing/sharing that history and knowing of Jesus long before everyone else!

Actually, at the risk of stating the obvious... you could avail yourself of any theological library, say, of your bible school, of your pastor, of your denomination...

Sometimes you get to the kind of commentaries that suit you best, quicker. And you can learn what to buy, or what not to buy, on Logos.

This a great commentary for getting to the point as someone has previously mentioned. It's great for the price, you can get it on sale too. When I was new to commentaries This was my go to set. It's worth having imho.

Joshua, the series is excellent. The constraints on the series is simply the length. They tend to be shorter than other commentary series, and if you look at the book lengths, all of the books of the series are roughly the same size. This means that if you're using one of the commentaries on Daniel, you'll probably have more than enough information, but if you're using the commentary on, say, Genesis, it will still be excellent, but you may not get as detailed exegesis.

As others have alluded to, purchasing the Libronix CD-ROM version elsewhere would be more cost-effective.

Just to add a little more info on Daniel in the Tnydale series. There is a web site called Best Commentaries that attempts to cull the reviews and recommendations of people like Don Carson, and then compile a listing of the commentaries on each book of the Bible ranked in relationship to others. The listing has a conservative evangelical slant (fine with me) since most of the reviews seem to come from that kind of source, nevertheless it can be a good place to make a quick check of a commentary or to search for one in a book you are contemplating covering.

Here's the link to the coverage of Daniel and you will note that the Tyndale volume is ranked second on the list. Not bad!

On Tyndale as a whole I give it a strong recommendation especially for lay persons. It requires no knowledge of original languages, does not get into too much when it comes to maters of introduction, and its points are succinct and therefore easy to locate. Some volumes are stronger than others. Note the overall views of the Tyndale Commentary on the same site: OT and NT. Many, particularly in the Old Testament, are ranked in the top four of all commentaries on a book.

Mr. Smith and others...thanks for this so much. My sermon series has been scaled down to one 30 minute sermon (gasp) and I have decided to focus on Daniel 1 and demonstate that "God is Sovereign" and fully in charge. I have quite a few Daniel resources and hope that perhaps if I do well enough, my Pastor will permit me to do more in time. Thanks everyone....I am going to use most of the resources you all pointed me to.
