Can I see locked resources?

In Logos 3 you could actually download and keep locked resources on your disk, and while they were not readable they were searchable. I liked having locked resources around because it let me explore easily what else existed.

Is there a way to integrate locked resources into my system in Logos 4?

Short answer, "No". Unlocked resources are automatically downloaded by Logos 4, but no locked ones.

I don't think so but let's ask for a reliable technical answer. I owned Logos 3.0 Scholar Gold for over a year before I found out you could search the locked resources. It was a good sales pitch ploy.

There's no support for doing anything with locked books. They created too much confusion and clutter for many users, so we decided to have the product focus on unlocked books.

Using locked resources was a handy way to create a quick scripture index for those books I had in print but didn't have the cash to buy a digital copy. For example, I would search BDAG for a Bible reference and then look at the heading title (lemmas) and if I wanted to look it up, it let me know what page number. This was very hand in Greek class for prepositions... saved a lot of unnecessary skimming those huge entries.

Now I have BDAG so I don't need that anymore, however, I would like to see some way for Logos to be able to search locked books. Since Logos collects statistics on people, if they set up the locked books right it could aid them in marketing. Having a locked book on my hard drive could let them know it was a work I was interested in and could hit me with custom emails etc advertising that book or books like and, perhaps even hit me with a small discount when I'm weak and not able to say no [;)]

I too would add my vote for some way to integrate locked resources in, for people who want it. In consideration of the new user issue that Bob wrote, maybe the default would be off. Many have very high speed Internet, and huge disks are cheap for some, so IMHO it would be useful and a great marketing tool. There are so many reasources now (a good thing!), many times I discover a resource through referaal by someone or stumbling across it in my work with ver. 3.

How would we determine which unlocked resources to store on our hard drives? I don't think I would want the overhead of storing and indexing everything Logos has to offer.

Despite my opinion that I think having the locked resources accessible would be a good feature, I realize there may be technical issues like indexing, or increased time to index or synchronize, or reduced performance, that make this prohibitive with today's ver. 4 architecture. Having it as an optional feature would take care of those that did not desire it. I personally would like it but it may be hard to implement.

I enjoyed being able to see the contents of the locked files and to see through Libronix what was available. If it was set as an option to enable/disable, it would be a useful addition!

How would we determine which unlocked resources to store on our hard drives? I don't think I would want the overhead of storing and indexing everything Logos has to offer.

My suggestion would be the ability would be enabled by a free addon that would have to be downloaded. This would make certain that users would be aware of the limitation of using locked books and those either ignorant of the ability or didn't want to use it wouldn't have to mess with it. The addin would let you view the list of books available and then you could check each book you wanted to download. The locked books would be indexed in seperately, like the supplemental index. As long as you could create collections of locked books (ie. tag:locked AND title:theology etc) this would work without too much extra work. Perhaps the locked books would only be available in the Library if you used a special button or syntax to reveal them, so you don't think you havce a book you really don't.

We're trying to avoid add-ins and "file by file" management on user systems. That's the kind of stuff that in the past has led to enormous amounts of difficult technical support. (At this point, you either have the app or not -- there are no "I have parts of it" scenarios. Makes support much easier.)

How about if we had every book indexed on the server, and could show summary search results from a web page, so you could see what books you didn't own had things you wanted? (We could filter out books you own from the results we present to you.) That way you wouldn't need 15-20 gigs to store unlocked books, and no one would have a week long indexing scenario. :-)

Super idea! It would also be great to see some "info" on the book (ie. as a hover-over or click an "i" button like current resources). I like to read-up on resources before buying.

How about we have a section on the PG similar in some ways to the sermon audio and powerpoint sections?

It would still be as you suggest a web query but the results would be in Logos.

Next to the hits you can include a "learn more about /purchase this resource" button.

Great idea! I can appreciate the desire to keep support costs as low as possible. I like it as long as I could easily limit the books I was searching. There are large parts of the Logos catalog I wouldn't want to have search hits to wade through.

Great idea - it's how I use Google Books - I can read a bit - eitehr a few pages or a snippet and then decide whether to add it to my library (dead wood or electronic).

+1 to Thomas' idea re passage guide. This would be much more helpful than powerpoints.... (but only if the results were collapsible!!!!!)
