This is how you can have Logos IPhone/IPad app read to you! (Read Aloud)

So one feature I always wished I had for the iphone/ipad was the "read aloud" option. Well there is but it is built into the iPhone/iPad settings. Here is how to use it with your Logo app:

1. Go to Settings/General/Accessibility/Speech

2. Enable "Speak Screen"

3. Open Logos app to book you want to have read to you

4. swipe down from the top of the screen with 2 fingers.

*You can adjust the speed, etc.

**Make sure your menu isn't in view otherwise it will read it too

***It will actually turn the page for you and everything.

I was very excited to see this work. Let me know if you find this useful.

I tried this the other day, and it's so close.

The reading is a bit stilted, but it's not unlistenable. Unfortunately, most Logos resources are at least of a somewhat technical nature; and the "reader" doesn't deal with those things well. For example, verses - numbers separated by colons - are read as times (hour:minute). Tables are treated somewhat strangely, etc. I think it would work well for popular level literature, without the technical features found in so many bible-related resources. But I can't use it for the books I spend the most time in within Logos.

I really appreciated the pointer.

Yes, I have followed all the instructions. I have to use the 2 finger swipe from the very top Since the 2 finger swipe will scroll down the screen. I am using iPad mini 2 with the latest ios 8.2 update.

It is working for web pages but not for logos. When I swipe down I get the little menu with the picture of the turtle, Ect. When I push play all I get is the words saying resource content and then the page is automatically turned.

I notice the suggestion make sure the menu isn't in view. It is reading enter reference, resource content so it stop at the menu. The logos 2 finger swipe down seems to override the read aloud feature. How do you get rid of the top menu?

Does this require iSO8? Can't get it to work with iOS7. I've enabled the settings as describe but the two finger swipe down either scrolls the Logos page down or brings the iOS information page showing the date, time, temperature, calendar events etc.

In Web pages it brings up a menu option where I can select speak for selected text and it works fine, but in logos the speak option is not part of the menu Logos App displays

John, are you using the latest Logos app update? When I tested the Speak screen with the update before last it was giving this same problem you're describing, which was fixed with the latest update.

I just purchased a refurbished iPad 3. My choice was partially based on this thread since I was really interested in having books read to me. My iPad arrived yesterday and the reading was great. I can put the iPad on a shelf on my elliptical and follow along as it turns the pages (for the most part) while I exercise.

When I was changing the setting for IOS it offered a download which supposedly enhanced the reading. Could anyone say whether this download improves the reading? I don't mind the space involved, but I would be unhappy to find that it actually degraded the quality. I suspect it cannot be removed once it is installed without initializing the iPad.

If you are new to Apple products then a slight mindset change may be needed. If Apple offer a 'stable mainline upgrade' (as opposed to anything labeled Beta) you should go for it. Very quickly advice sites, support and users assume that you have the latest version available for the model you own.

Apple regularly put out incremental improvements to programs and firmware, it is always best to install these immediately - just because you think it ain't broken doesn't mean some hacker out there hasn't spotted a hairline crack.

I'm glad so many also have found this to be useful!

2 other things to note that I've learned:

1. If you keep it on "page turning" instead of scrolling it seems to be more consistently accurate. I haven't tested this a whole lot but it seems to be better for me.

2. You can actually start it reading to you and then leave the logos app and it will still read to you. so if you find it easier to read while you are doodling or doing a simple puzzle game you can do it at the same time. Then if you want to jump back quickly to highlight or something you click where it says "Logos Bible" in the floating box. Oh, and you can make the floating box smaller by hitting the little arrow to the left.

Hi Will, just wanted to let you know that it is actually now built into the app. You not longer have to use this workaround method. On the Ios version it is a small speaker toward the top menu.
