What is it?

Get a better understanding of concepts that were common to the biblical world. The new Cultural Concepts tool identifies over 1,000 cultural concepts across the Bible, like religious activities, food, music, birth and death practices, marriage rituals, and economic structures, then connects these concepts to the literature that surrounded the Bible. In seconds, explore all the cultural concepts expressed in a passage, then connect those concepts to ancient texts for a more thorough understanding.

How does it work?

Watch the Cultural Concepts feature in action.

Open in Logos 6

How do I get it?

The Cultural Concepts feature is available in Core Crossgrade and Bronze level base packages and higher

The link is a logos4:... link.  If your browser doesn't support passing the link on to Logos6, or Logos isn't installed, the link can't be opened.

Sorry, I just meant that the phrase "Watch the Cultural Concepts feature in actions" was not a physical hyperlink like it is in the other posts so I just added the missing hyperlink.

Just because we shipped Logos 6 a few weeks ago doesn't mean we don't continue to improve it. Compare the above screenshot with the one below taken with today's resource updates. Our team of scholars continue to annote more ancient literature with cultural concepts. I believe we're a little north of 75,000 annotations now. Nobody else has this.

That's another reason why I love Logos. Thank you to your and your team.

Question: can cultural concepts be searched, for example from within a Bible? Or can I make a passage list from the Bible passages in the cultural concept section?

Question: can cultural concepts be searched, for example from within a Bible?

Yes - they can

The "Lexham Cultural Ontology Glossary" lists the cultural concepts currently defined.

Schumitinu:
Or can I make a passage list from the Bible passages in the cultural concept section?

This would be nice but I don't believe it is possible at the moment

Not directly, but you could do it this way:

  1. Expand the Bible section under Cultural Concepts
  2. Choose Print/Export from the panel menu of the Factbook
  3. Export to a new Word document
  4. Select the section of the Word document containing all those Bible references
  5. Copy to clipboard
  6. Go back to Logos and create a new Passage List
  7. Add from clipboard

I should have included this in my earlier reply

To generate the search directly from the Factbook entry - right click on a verse, select the Prayer Cultural Concept and then run the search

Thank you Graham and Rosie!

I thought there is a way. But sometimes it is hard to remember all the different ways and possibilities. I'll keep learning.

Just checking out this 'Cultural Concepts' tool, and found that it listed a number of resources that are not in my library (L.6 Platinum). Is this a new selling technique by Logos? Or can I limit the display to include resources which I own, and no more?

Hint: it is usual to start a new thread rather than change the topic within a thread - it makes it more certain you will get an answer.

Factbook is a curated reference which means that it is not limited to resources you own. This is true of several other curated sets but was not very visible to many users until Factbook. Some people consider it a selling technique; many do not seeing it as the normal behavior of reference books and a great positive step forward. Think of it as more like the bibliography at the end of an encyclopedia article which you would not expect to be limited to what you own. No, you cannot limit it to resources you own.

A lot of people (esp. Pastors) have many of the resources we've annotated with the cultural ontology on their dead-tree book shelves or in their seminary library.  By providing all the references, you have the option of tracking down the reference outside of Logos.  We won't object if you buy a copy of the resource from us either.  Smile

I can't figure out how you got to this view. I get resources under Cultural Concepts

and a save as passage list under Passages which is where I see the Biblical references:

So how do I duplicate your results? Just curious but puzzled ...

Using Factbook you will get curated references that are not found in your Library. Just use the All Resources link at the bottom to search your Library.
