I was thinking this would return all the times the speaker (Jesus) quoted the Old Testament. What am I missing?

Just a guess, but I'm thinking it is because you are using the HCSB. You will need to use the KJV, NKJV, ESV or the NASB95.

Yes - because the HCSB is one of the few Bibles which have "OT Quotation" as a search field.

But - as per https://community.logos.com/forums/p/94264/654811.aspx#654811 - it doesn't support Speaker Labels which is why the search fails

They don't support "OT Quotation"

Here is a great way of doing it - https://community.logos.com/forums/p/94264/658635.aspx#658635

the HCSB seems to be the only one that includes OT Quotation. ESV, NIV, NASB show similar results as NKJV below.

The problem with the method in that thread is this. the only way for me to duplicate it is to go to that thread and copy and paste. I am looking for some way I can work out from within Logos itself. I'd like to be able to work the software without having to go to a forum, search, copy and paste a string I don't really understand.

Very good point - completely understand.

It is possible to work out the constituent strings. An example below:

Assuming you want to search for OT quotations then you can find an NT passage which quotes from the OT, run a Passage Guide and ensure that the section "Literary Typing" is included. Example below:

Right-click on the "Quotation, Old Testament" and choose a search option

That runs a search and gives you the required search syntax

You can do the same thing for the speaker search

which gives you that syntax as well.

So you have two search strings

  • {Section <LiteraryTyping = Quotation, Old Testament>}
  • {Speaker <Person Jesus>}

and you just need to combine them.

Here you need to know about the WITHIN operator - and an example of it is shown in the search panel towards the bottom

With that information you are able to put the final search string together.

{Speaker <Person Jesus>} WITHIN {Section <LiteraryTyping = Quotation, Old Testament>}

Hope that helps, Graham
