Bug 6.0a RC1: Most Event searches still do not work

1. Open up the ESV

2. Navigate to Gen 9:1

3. Right click on the word "blessed". Select the event "God makes a covenant with Noah" and then select the option to search this resource.

0 hits are returned, in spite the fact that the search was run from the event itself tagged in the resource!

On the good side, a few <Event> searches are working again, like <Event The flood>. However, they might be returning the wrong results....

To see what I mean, run the search for <Event The flood>. Then, click to open some of the results. Right click on the highlighted words. You won't see an event named "the flood". Instead, you'll see other events... that return 0 hits. You will also see a "thing" called "the flood" that correctly returns exactly the same search results as for <Event The flood>. All this would seem to indicate that <Event XXXXXX> searching is still very broken (except for {Section <Event XXXXX>}, which is fixed, thanks!).

Its a bug not an event issue - the event is there.

Try this - after your test above fails, add a space after 'Noah' in the event, so it looks like this:

<Event God makes a covenant with Noah >

    now it works!

Interesting - it doesn't work for me, with or without a space. Does this trick work for you for all events? I have tried with some other events as well and no luck.

This is very bizarre. This morning it worked fine, I could make the event come up every time with the space. Now, I can see it in the dropdown box, but when I click on it I get no results. This is definitely a problem, I don't know where it is though.

  • Select the event "God makes a covenant with Noah"

Using Logos 6.0a RC 1, replicated right click Event search returning 0 in Bible while Everything search is missing a number of Library resources:

Section search of Event finds verses:

"Match equivalent references" is current returning <Thing Flood> for a search for <Event The flood>. I'm not sure that this is correct, so I'll report it.

It's working as designed; it's just not working as you assume it should work.

Events aren't linked to specific words in the biblical text, as <Person>, <Place>, and <Thing> are. You can, however, search for their "defining texts" using the {Section} extension.

To me it seems like that is exactly what "match equivalent references" should do - "the flood" is in fact also an event. I ran a test just to see if it wasn't occurring with all events-things (which would be a bug) searching for <Event Dog>, and nothing was returned, whereas <Thing Dog> works just fine. So, it would seem that this distinction is working correctly. On the other hand, however, it is probably this search (which was presented as the example search in the initial posts introducing the feature) that caused the confusion making us think events were attached to words, so maybe you're right... hmmm...

OK, I can see that. In fact, the event appears in the context menu of any words that are within a certain verse range. So, these work like Cultural Concepts.

But, if that's the case, then there are maybe some design problems out there.... For example, shouldn't "Match equivalent references" search for either <Event XXXXX> or {Section <Event XXXXX>}? This would resolve most of these difficulties.

As well, the context menu searches runs an <Event God makes a covenant with Noah> search, which returns 0 results. Maybe it should run a {Section <Event God makes a covenant with Noah>} search when run from a Bible, as the Cultural Concepts do. It seems silly to right click on an event in a Bible, search for it in that resource, and get 0 hits. One interesting thing I noticed about the visual design of the context menu is that there is a line between the Persons/Places/Things and between the Events/CulturalConcepts, which might indicate this type of division of markup of words vs. verses? If so, it would also seem logical to switch the type of search based on that division.

We discussed this during the beta, went back and forth, and settled on the current behaviour. The same thing happens for milestones in many resources (e.g., in Jospehus, where there are no intra-resource cross references) so we decided it wasn't unacceptable for it to perform this way.

That comparison is between very different classes of 'datatype'. Strictly, there are no bible references within a bible but the context Search is adapted to look at non-bible text and footnotes ("All text"). We know there is Event text in a bible, though, so adapt the Search to show that text. Why do it for Cultural Concepts and not for Events?

If it is acceptable to return 0 hits why bother to show Events in the menu?
