Pilgrim’s Progress (audio)

  • Author: John Bunyan
  • Narrator: Nadia May
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: P.F. Collier & Son
  • Runtime: 10.5 hours

John Bunyan penned the most successful allegory ever written. He lost his first wife and was imprisoned for 12 years for his compelling—but unlicensed—preaching. Nevertheless, his preaching about the gravity of sin, salvation by grace, the cost of discipleship, perseverance, and the glory of eternal life lives on in the signs and symbols of The Pilgrim’s Progress. Embark on a perilous journey with Christian, the lead character, from the City of Destruction to the luminous safe haven of the Celestial City. The journey will encourage you to “set your hope fully on the grace to be given you” amidst the obstacles of life.

John Bunyan (1628–1688) is one of the most prominent Puritans of all time. Bunyan was well known as a respected preacher during his lifetime and remembered through his writing to this day—namely The Pilgrim’s Progress.

After joining the Bedford Baptist Church of Bedford, England, in 1654, Bunyan began preaching in nearby villages. He was prosecuted under an Elizabethan act against nonconformity and imprisoned for three months which was extended to 12 years. Bunyan became the pastor of St. John’s Church the same month as his release from prison.

The author of more than 60 books, Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, Holy War, and his autobiographical book Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, gained a prominent and unique place in history.

Creature of the Word: The Jesus-Centered Church (audio)

  • Authors: Matt Chandler, Eric Geiger, and Josh Patterson
  • Narrator: David Cochran Heath
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: B&H
  • Runtime: 7.9 hours

The Reformers viewed the gospel as not merely one thing among many in the life of a church but rather the means by which the church exists. When the gospel is rightly declared and applied to God’s people, the church becomes “a creature of the Word.” She understands, embraces, and lives out the reality of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection in more than her doctrinal statement. The gospel impacts all that the church is and does.

Creature of the Word lays out this concept in full, first examining the rich, scripture-based beauty of a Jesus-centered church, then clearly provides practical steps toward forming a Jesus-centered church. Authors Matt Chandler, Eric Geiger, and Josh Patterson write a centering discussion piece for those whose goal is to be part of a church that has its theology, culture, and practice completely saturated in the gospel.

Matt Chandler serves as lead pastor of The Village Church in Highland Village, Texas, a multi-campus church attended by more than 10,000 people. His sermons are regularly one of the top five podcasts on iTunes and his first book, The Explicit Gospel, is a bestseller.

Eric Geiger serves as the vice president of the church resource division at LifeWay Christian Resources. Eric received his doctorate in leadership and church ministry from Southern Seminary. He is also a teaching pastor and a frequent speaker and consultant on church mission and strategy. Eric has authored or coauthored several books including the best-selling church leadership book, Simple Church.

Josh Patterson serves as lead pastor of ministry leadership at The Village Church located in the Dallas/Fort Worth region of Texas.

The Explicit Gospel (audio)

  • Authors: Matt Chandler and Jared C. Wilson
  • Narrator: David Cochran Heath
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: Crossway
  • Runtime: 8.37 hours

Even if you go to church, it doesn’t mean that you are being exposed (or exposing others) to the gospel explicitly. Sure, most people talk about Jesus, and about being good and avoiding bad, but the gospel message simply isn’t there—at least not in its specificity and its fullness.

Inspired by the needs of both the overchurched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, popular pastor Matt Chandler writes this punchy treatise to remind us what is of first and utmost importance—the gospel.

Here is a call to true Christianity, to know the gospel explicitly, and to unite the church on the amazing grounds of the good news of Jesus!

  • Authors: Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears
  • Narrator: Sean Runnette
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: Crossway
  • Runtime: 15 hours

Doctrine is the word Christians use to define the truth—claims revealed in Holy Scripture. Of course there is a multitude of churches, church networks, and denominations, each with their own doctrinal statement with many points of disagreement. But while Christians disagree on a number of doctrines, there are key elements that cannot be denied by anyone claiming to be a follower of Jesus.

In Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe, Driscoll and Breshears teach 13 of these key elements. This meaty yet readable overview of basic doctrine will help Christians clarify and articulate their beliefs in accordance with the Bible.

Mark Driscoll is the founding pastor of Mars Hill Church, based in Seattle, Washington. In 2010, Preaching magazine named him one of the 25 most influential pastors of the past 25 years. Driscoll’s online sermons are downloaded millions of times each year, he is the author of over 15 books, and he has also written for CNN, The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, and many other outlets.

Gerry Breshears is professor of systematic theology, and chair of the division of biblical and theological studies at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon.

  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: Thomas Nelson
  • Runtime: 8.9 hours

Mark Driscoll and his wife, Grace, talk about sex and marriage in down-to-earth terms, hitting issues other Christian books won’t. While a wonderful wedding day is important, it’s the last day of marriage that really counts. Will the last day of your marriage come prematurely through divorce? Will it be filled with regrets as you sit at the funeral of your spouse? Or, by God’s grace, will the last day be a time to rejoice in the life you lived together?

Mark Driscoll and his wife, Grace, want you to finish well on the last day. They share private and painful issues that damaged their own marriage—including his introduction to pornography in elementary school and her abuse as a teenager at the hands of a boyfriend—and how they overcame them to experience healing and joy with each other again.

From fun date night tips to the most tricky “can we do that?” sex questions, Mark and Grace share practical help and hope with people just like them.

Religious Affections (audio)

  • Author: Jonathan Edwards
  • Narrator: Simon Vance
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Classics
  • Print Publisher: Logos Bible Software
  • Runtime: 15.2 hours

The Religious Affections—quite possibly the most important book written by America’s greatest theologian—explores the nature of true religion, true revival, and true conversion. Carefully distinguishing true Christianity from false faith, Jonathan Edwards used his experiences as a pastor and leader of the Great Awakening as the basis for this book. Considered a masterpiece of religion and philosophy, this book continues to influence church leaders today.

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) began his formal education at Yale College in 1716, where he encountered the Calvinism that had influenced his own Puritan upbringing. In 1727, he was ordained as minister of the church in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Great Awakening began in Edwards’ church three years later, which prompted Edwards to study conversion and revival within the context of Calvinism. During the revival, Edwards preached his most famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” and penned many of his most popular works, including The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God, Freedom of the Will, and The Life of David Brainerd.

Twelve Ordinary Men: How the Master Shaped His Disciples, and What He Wants to Do with You (audio)

  • Author: John F. MacArthur
  • Narrator: Lloyd James
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: Thomas Nelson
  • Runtime: 7 hours

Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God’s work. Look no further than the 12 disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men—fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots—and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. MacArthur draws principles from Christ’s careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today’s modern disciple—you.

John MacArthur (1939–) is a Calvinist theologian, author, editor, and teacher. He is a popular conference speaker and the president of both The Master’s College and The Master’s Seminary. He has also served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California since 1969. Best known for his expository sermons, MacArthur has a pulpit ministry that extends around the globe through his media ministry, Grace to You. In addition to producing daily radio programs for nearly 2,000 English and Spanish radio outlets worldwide, Grace to You distributes books, software, and CDs by John MacArthur. He has written hundreds of books and study guides, including the bestselling John MacArthur Essential Bible Study Library and the The MacArthur Study Bible.

Humility: True Greatness (audio)

  • Author: C.J. Mahaney
  • Narrator: Sean Runnette
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: Multnomah Books
  • Runtime: 4 hours

A battle rages within every one of us every day. It’s the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God’s call to recognize that we’re really nothing without him. It’s pride versus humility. And it’s a fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross.

C.J. Mahaney raises a battle cry to daily, diligently, and deliberately weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility). His thorough examination clarifies misconceptions, revealing the truth about why God detests pride and turns his active attention to the humble.

C.J. Mahaney leads Sovereign Grace Ministries in its mission to establish and support local churches. He served as pastor of Covenant Life Church in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., for 27 years and is author of The Cross-Centered Life, Christ Our Mediator, and Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God: What Every Christian Husband Needs to Know.

Absolute Surrender (audio)

  • Author: Andrew Murray
  • Narrator: Simon Vance
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Classic
  • Print Publisher: Pleasant Places Press
  • Runtime: 3.5 hours

In this classic of Christian spirituality, Andrew Murray shows that the only way Christians can step into God’s blessing is through absolute surrender of the self to God’s will. He teaches Christians how to develop compete trust in God, and how to listen to him in humility through the Holy Spirit.

Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be “the chief end of the church.” Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission’s name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day. He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904–1905 Welsh Revival.

Knowing God (audio)

  • Author: J.I. Packer
  • Narrator: Simon Vance
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: IVP
  • Runtime: 9.5 hours

A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian’s existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the “gigantic conspiracy of misdirection” by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love his Word.

What began as a number of consecutive articles angled for “honest, no-nonsense readers who were fed up with facile Christian verbiage” in 1973, Knowing God has become a contemporary classic by creating “small studies out of great subjects.” Each chapter is so specific in focus (covering topics such as the Trinity, election, God’s wrath, and God’s sovereignty), that each succeeding chapter’s theology seems to rival the next, until one’s mind is so expanded that one’s entire view of God has changed.

Having rescued us from the individual hunches of our ultra-tolerant theological age, Packer points the reader to the true character of God with his theological competence and compassionate heart. The lazy and faint-hearted should be warned about this timeless work—God is magnified, the sinner is humbled, and the saint encouraged.

J.I. Packer (1926–), or James Innell Packer, is considered one of the most influential evangelicals in North America. Packer committed his life to Christian service after hearing lectures from C.S. Lewis while studying at Oxford. In the 1950s, Packer was ordained a deacon and priest in the Church of England. Before moving to Canada, he lectured at several schools, including Tyndale Hall in Bristol, Latimer House in Oxford, and Oak Hill Theological College in London.

A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer (audio)

  • Author: John Piper
  • Narrator: Cris Obyron
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: Crossway
  • Runtime: 5.5 hours

There is an appetite for God. And it can be awakened. John Piper invites you to turn from the dulling effects of food and the dangers of idolatry, and to say with some simple fast: “This much, O God, I want you.” Our appetites dictate the direction of our lives—whether it be the cravings of our stomachs, the passionate desire for possessions or power, or the longings of our spirits for God. But for the Christian, the hunger for anything besides God can be an arch-enemy, while our hunger for God—and him alone—is the only thing that will bring victory.

Do you have that hunger for him? As Piper puts it: “If we don’t feel strong desires for the manifestation of the glory of God, it is not because you have drunk deeply and are satisfied. It is because we have nibbled so long at the table of the world. Our soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great.” If we are full of what the world offers, then perhaps a fast might express, or even increase, our soul’s appetite for God.

Between the dangers of self-denial and self-indulgence is this path called fasting. It is the path John Piper invites you to travel in this book. For when God is the supreme hunger of your heart, he will be supreme in everything. And when you are most satisfied in him, he will be most glorified in you.

John Piper (b. 1946) is a widely respected theologian and bestselling author who served as pastor for preaching and vision of Bethlehem Baptist Church for 33 years. He still serves as chancellor of Bethlehem College and Seminary. Piper received his Doctorate in Theology from the University of Munich and taught biblical studies for six years at Bethel College.

Desiring God: Meditations of A Christian Hedonist (audio)

  • Author: John Piper
  • Narrator: Grover Gardner
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: Multnomah
  • Runtime: 12.3 hours

The pursuit of pleasure is not optional. It is essential. Scripture reveals that the great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying him forever. In this paradigm-shattering work, John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn’t truly exist: delight is our duty. Join him as he unveils stunning, life-impacting truths you saw in the Bible but never dared to believe. The message of Desiring God is that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. In this book, Piper calls this worldview “Christian Hedonism” and explains why pursuing maximum joy is essential to glorifying God. He discusses the implications of this for conversion, worship, love, Scripture, prayer, money, marriage, missions, and suffering.

When I Don’t Desire God: How to Fight for Joy (audio)

  • Author: John Piper
  • Narrator: David Cochran Heath
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: Crossway
  • Runtime: 9 hours

For over 25 years John Piper has trumpeted the truth that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” He calls it “Christian Hedonism.” The problem is that many people, after being persuaded, find that this truth is both liberating and devastating.

It’s liberating because it endorses our inborn desire for joy. And it’s devastating because it reveals that we don’t desire God the way we should. What do you do when you discover the good news that God wants you to be content in him, but then find that you aren’t?

If joy in God were merely the icing on the cake of Christian commitment, this book would be insignificant. But Piper argues that joy is so much more. Our being satisfied in God is necessary to show God’s worthiness and to sustain sacrifices of love.

Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before him. He tasted it. It sustained him through the deepest suffering. His Father was glorified. His people were saved. That is what joy in God does.

The absolutely urgent question becomes: What can I do if I don’t have it? With a pastor’s heart and with radical passion for the glory of Christ, John Piper helps you answer that question.

Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream (audio)

  • Author: David Platt
  • Narrator: David Platt
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio
  • Print Publisher: Multnomah Books
  • Runtime: 6.5 hours

What is Jesus worth to you? It’s easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily. . . . But who do you know who lives like that? Do you?

In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple—then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a “successful” suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment—a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the good news Jesus came to bring.

David Platt is the pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama. He has traveled extensively to teach the Bible alongside church leaders throughout the United States and around the world. He holds an MDiv, ThM and PhD from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has previously served at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary as dean of chapel and assistant professor of expository preaching and apologetics, and as staff evangelist at Edgewater Baptist Church in New Orleans.

Defending Your Faith: An Introduction to Apologetics (audio)

  • Author: R.C. Sproul
  • Narrator: Robertson Dean
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: Crossway
  • Runtime: 7.5 hours

There is a widespread belief that reason and faith are incompatible and opposed to each other. Faith is viewed as subjective, emotional, a crutch for those who find the real world too hard. Though many of the world’s finest minds hold this view, the Bible teaches that it is the fool who says there is no God.

R.C. Sproul clearly and simply argues that at its core Christianity is rational. He focuses on defending the basic truth claims for two of the most crucial issues of apologetics: God’s existence and the Bible’s authority.

In this primer of apologetic thought, Sproul affirms four logical principles that are necessary for all real discussion and teaches you how to defend your faith in a faithless world. Using the writings of church fathers and philosophers throughout the ages, he uncovers the common ideologies that work against faith. The defense of the faith is not a luxury or an intellectual vanity. It is a task appointed by God that you should be able to give a reason for the hope that is in you as you bear witness before the world.

The Cross of Christ (audio)

  • Author: John R.W. Stott
  • Narrator: Simon Vance
  • Edition: Unabridged
  • Publisher: christianaudio Hovel
  • Print Publisher: IVP
  • Runtime: 12 hours

“I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross . . . In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?” With compelling honesty John Stott examines the centerpiece of the Christian faith in this classic study. He explores a crucial question: why should an object of Roman distaste and Jewish disgust be the emblem of our worship and the axiom of our faith? And what does it mean for us today?

A contemporary restatement of the meaning of the cross, this is theology at its best. At the cross Stott finds the majesty and love of God disclosed, as well as the sin and bondage of the world exposed. Written with great warmth and insight, Stott’s work is the product of a uniquely gifted pastor, scholar, and Christian statesman. More than a study of the atonement, this book brings Scripture into living dialogue with Christian theology and the twentieth century. And what emerges is a powerful pattern for Christian life in worship, hope, and mission. The richness of this masterwork is sure to feed both heart and mind.

John Robert Walmsley Stott, is an English Christian leader and Anglican clergyman who is noted as a leader of the worldwide evangelical movement. He is notable as one of the principal authors of the Lausanne Covenant in 1974. In 2005, Time magazine ranked Stott among the 100 most influential people in the world.
