Something I Should Know After All These Years But Don't

Friends - a quick thank you to all of you "Super-Helpers" in the forums. I truly appreciate what you do. I'd start listing you all but I would forget someone. My post count is not all that high and I joined the forums when they started them, and was even on the old usenet group. The reason for that is that you guys get to it quicker than me, even if I know the answer. Often I don't, so I am asking for help today.

There is a double arrow that shows up in places in the software. I see it often in interlinears and the Bible Sense Lexicon, for example. I don't know what that is telling me and I am a bit embarrassed to admit that after 23 years of using Logos.

Thanks, MJ. You are one of the most helpful people on these forums and I appreciate hearing your perspective on things, as we come from different church traditions.

So, if it is equivalent, why not just pick one or the other? I'm not trying to be combative, but I could come up with 2-3 other phrases that are equivalent. Trying to understand and make better use of some powerful tools that I have not used fully.

Well, at least on the Mac, the whole graphic is not reliable. Sometimes only the first few letters, sometimes cutting off the last (as below). No matter 'fit' or 'actual'. And as you tried, often the arrow is not clickable. But if it did work, the popout is the 2nd word discussion, and the links to other words.

I may be wrong but I've assumed that it is where the equivalent senses both appear in the BSL in different contexts (synsets) i.e. where the hierarchy diagram doesn't capture the relationships of what is actual a web/network of relationships.

It is the mathematical symbol for equivalence, but in the context of Bible Sense Lexicon is best read as "conceived of as".

It's not that the two senses are equivalent (in fact, there is a sense for "to be lifted up" that is distinct), but that the sense before the ⇔ is expressed using the sense/phrase after it.

You can hopefully see this more clearly with a different sense, to die (specifically its children):

Various euphemisms ("fall asleep", "go to one's fathers") mean "to die", but are expressed with a different word. We don't want to conflate those with the sense "to die" (and lose those distinctions), but we also don't merge to merge them with the sense meaning to literally go to sleep. So it's written as "to die ⇔ lie down to sleep" meaning that the sense of the word is "to die", but it's expressed with a word or phrase that often has a different literal surface meaning.

In the OP, the word being used could have a literal sense of physically lifting something up, but in context is being used to figuratively mean "to be exalted".

It is for identifying when a figurative meaning is at play. In this case, the literal phrase is "be lifted up" but it is a metaphor for being exalted. If you type it into the command box and hover over it, it spells it out as "to be exalted, conceived of as being lifted up." If you click the term, it also gives that full definition on the left pane.
