1. This is the first of posts on searching for Judaic sources - Talmud, Mishna, Philo, Josephus ... It is divided into multiple posts because the search is not as simple as if might appear.

2. The Context Menu for Philo shows that there are two different schemes (or if you prefer schema) for datatyles/milestones in Philo: <WorksOfPhilo> and <WorksOfPhiloYonge>. Most Philo source resources are coded with both schemes; most references to Philo are coded only in the scheme used by the author.

3. Using the Context Menu to build the searches, I get very different results as I have only one resource that is tagged bt the <WorksOfPhiloYonge>. Note that Flight 19 is a much larger chunk of text than Flight 101 as we will see below.

4. If I want to get all of the references to the section, I must combine the two searches ... 24 resources from the first element in the search and 1 additional resource from the second element. Note the use of the comma to specify "any of" rather than the default, unmarked "all of".

5. This is the same as the query above but written with the logical operator OR rather than a comma.

6. Note that XIX includes 100-105 ... but notice that the reference box shows 99 meaning that a search would erroneously be built on 99-105. However, one can make the correction recognizing that in datatypes this means <WorksOfPhiloYonge 19> is equivalent to <WorksOfPhilo 100-105>.

7. <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 100–105> is equivalent to <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 100>, <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 101>, <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 102>, <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 103>, <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 104>, <WorksOfPhilo = Flight 105>. This principle of specifying a range of contiguous milestones/datatypes works through Logos.

8. Doing a search on the milestones I discover that The Works of Philo: Greek Text with Morphology is the only Philo resource I own that does not have both sets of milestones i.e. <WorksOfPhiloYonge> will not work on it. This means that if I am using Philo and Holy Scripture which has only the <WorksOfPhiloYonge> links, the Greek Text with Morphology is not recognized as a potential source ... the datatypes are different.

9. One can search for references to Exodus within this section of Philo. As the morphologically coded Greek is the only item that could potentially not show, it doesn't really matter which datatype I use; I should get identical results if I search identical sections.

10. As a quick way to check the completeness of the tagging of Philo, I run two searches:
- Philo NEAR Flight which is imprecise but is likely to pick up some of the references whether or not they are linked
- <WorksOfPhilo ~ Flight> OR <WorksOfPhiloYonge ~ Flight> note the use of ~ to pick up any part or overlap ...
Note the first resource on the left but not on the right is a reference to Pseudo-Philo and therefore irrelevant. At first glance it appears that the Philo tagging is reasonable complete.
