Collection: epubdate:2002

Then remove everything that was not EGW nor related to SDA

Worked for me

Well, I got my collection built in L4 with 415 resources, but now how do you search the collection?

At first I thought it just hadn't been indexed yet, but now it is fully indexed and my other collections are available for a search, but not my new EGW collection from the standard search box.

Lloyd Claycomb:
but now how do you search the collection?

It is really just like any other search. I am not sure why yours would not be working. I also have 415 resources in my collection.

A few things that I would try:

1) if you have not already, restart your computer. This has solved a lot of problems for me! Restart Logos and see if the little icon in the system tray pops up telling you that it has started indexing again.

2) If the little indexing box does not appear. Try doing a search through your entire library for the word "judgment" and see if there is a message similar to "Some results will appear differently because your index has not been merged. Click here to merge indexes now". This is not the exact wording, I am working off of memory. Note: judgment is a very common word in my library with over 78,000 results (Scholar's Package plus a few books), so if you have a higher package than mine, it will obviously be higher.

3) If it does not ask you to merge your library, simply try a search for "judgment" in just your EGW collection and see what you get. In the picture below, you will notice that I named the collection for all 415 of my resources "Seventh Day Adventist Expanded Collection" but whatever you named yours should be of no relevance.

4) Notice that we have went from easiest to hardest so far. My last suggestion is the most time consuming. If all else fails, I would simply type "rebuild index" (without quotes) in the command bar and let it completely start over. I have had to do this several times in the past, especially with 4.0c when I bought new books. I have not bought any recently (since 4.0d) and am kind of hoping that I don't have to rebuild the entire index every time that I buy a new book. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Smile

Other than those 4 things, I truly would have no idea since it appears that your books are fully loaded in Logos 4 and readable.

Thanks again for your help!  I know how to do it now.

At first I wanted to do  BIBLE SEARCH instead of a BASIC SEARCH like I would in other resources that mention that word search in the bible text.  Apparently the EGW resources don't have the Bible verses mentioned hyperlinked, so that will never work... maybe when the book builder is released it can be rebuilt?

But doing a BASIC SEARCH through the collection works like a charm as it should; it searches phrases, words, etc,. in the EGW writings just fine.

Thanks again for everyone's help!  I'm really enjoying this new resource.  What's really cool is (as you probably know) you can custom highlight the EGW resources (or any other) and do some really cool searches based on your highlighted text after you've done enough reading/highlighting.  Sure makes locating things you want to keep fresh on very easy!  Logos 4 sure takes studying and reviewing to the next level!

Oh, and BTW, the CD-rom is about 1/4 the list price right now if you look hard enough (ABC).

Hi Lloyd,

I am not 100% sure about your meaning on the above quote (I'm sure it is my lack of understanding instead of your description <sometimes I don't comprehend well>). You do know that there are scriptural and topical indexes of Mrs. White's writings in the package? In Logos 4 they are available by opening up your library and typing "ellen white index" and simply click on them to open them. You then navigate to the reference that you want to research and all of her writings on that particular area will be available as links.

I'm not sure if you decided to install Libronix 3 or not but you can get these indexes automatically from the "Home Page" by typing your reference in the Scriptural Index box and Libronix automatically jumps to both indexes (numbers 1 and 2 on my snipping)  and your preferred translation (#3).

It sounds as if you got your software very quickly! I'm happy for you about that and I am even more happy that you found a solution to the problem you mentioned about the searches. Happy studying!!  Big Smile

Another frustrating thing, is after I've made a collection of EGW writings minus the commentaries, when I go to search, generally I've found when searching by bible text you have to put a "."  at the end (i.e. "John 3:16." NOT "John 3:16"). Otherwise all the texts I tried to fiddle around with gave me 0 hits.

But of course you have to do two searches. Abbreviated Book and full name

Revelation 19:6. = 1 hits
Rev. 19:6. = 9 hits

I put bible text in quotations marks because i want just that reference to show up not Rev. or some other reference like Rev 9:xx

[Using Verbum (i.e. Logos 5)]

Search ALL TEXT in EGWTotal (a collection of 418 SDA resources)

SEARCH with [John 3:16]   (no quotes)  [434 hits in 388 articles in 13 resources]

Scripture describes the essence of divine love as the Father is giving up the Son (John 3:16; Rom. 8:32; cf. 2 Cor. 5:21) and, simultaneously, the Son’s giving Himself up (Gal. 2:20; Eph. 5:2; Heb. 9:14).   Raoul Dederen, vol. 12, Handbook of Seventh-Day Adventist Theology, electronic ed., Commentary Reference Series, 111 (Hagerstown, MD: Review and Herald Publishing Association, 2001).

Then if you hover your mouse over the [John 3:16] in the text the scripture quote is displayed

SEARCH with [“John 3:16”]   (with quotes)  [448 hits in 402 articles in 72 resources]

Even the manner of His death had been shadowed forth. As the brazen serpent had been uplifted in the wilderness, so was the coming Redeemer to be lifted up, "that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16. {AA 226.3}   Ellen Gould White, The Acts of the Apostles in the Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; Conflict of the Ages Series, Volume 4; Acts of the Apostles, 226 (Pacific Press Publishing Association, 1911).

Then if you hover your mouse over the [John 3:16] in the text the scripture quote is NOT displayed

I am assuming that the publisher (R&H) [a Logos partner] did not do all the needed tagging.

[This was NOT done by Logos – it was done by the Logos partner]

Some hits are seen as text (need “”)  and others seen as Bible reference (without the “”).

[adding a ‘.’ After the reference did not change things] [Using Verbum (i.e. Logos 5)]

Hi Lynden,

I rarely communicate on these forums but I couldn't help noticing that in your suggestion to Mr. Brathwaite to "take your email address down and add a user name in there, or your email will be flooded with spam",  that you had actually posted his email address onto the forum by way of the quote feature.  I see that Mr. Brathwaite has made the correction that you suggested and it would probably be a good gesture, if not to late,  for you to remove the quote from your posting which reveals his email address.  I know this was just an oversite and your intentions were well meaning.

Blessings

I'm afraid that the time to edit my post (10) hours has long gone. Will send Nathan Smoyer a message asking him to correct it if possible, or remove my post.

Is there a reason that you are not using <John 3:16> ?

David Ames:
SEARCH with [John 3:16]  (no quotes)

Although recognised as a bible reference this format doesn't search for "John 3:16" only e.g. it will also find  Jn:3.1-17, which includes v16. You will have to use <=Jn3.16> for an exact match. Of course this only works for bible references that are tagged, and they can appear in any format in the text e.g. v16, Jn 3:16. See wiki help at http://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELP

David Ames:
SEARCH with ["John 3:16"]  (with quotes)

This will pick up tagged and untagged references provided they appear exactly as quoted. It will miss " v16", "Jn 3:16" and it will erroneously include "1 John 3:16", "John 3:16-17".

The truth will lie between the results of <=Jn3.16> and "John 3:16", except for untagged references not matching the latter!

All of Mrs White writings need to be retagged. An expensive venture considering we are talking abut 100,000 or more pages. Not sure that the cost can be regained, since they are available for free online.

MJ. Smith:

As you and Dave Hooton  pointed out there are 'other' [and better] ways

But as the collection is not correctly tagged it does not matter what I do [IMHO]

Had repeated the David Salazar's 'method' and 'quit' as soon as I got a 'reasonable' answer

[[and it is nice that Logos added search helps when you start a search rather then needing to find a 'help' screen]]

Update:

In the beginning of that product only the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary set was included as it was published by the Review and Herald Publishing Association.

Latter updates added the text from the Eileen G White works. The text files used were acquired from the Eileen G White Estate.

Doing some random checks the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary set seems to be tagged correctly so that Bible references are seen as Bible references. [Hover mouse over and see the Bible text]

The rest of the text files are just that – text files with no tagging.  Bible references are seen as TEXT with no special meaning.
