E G White Writings

I done it the hard way and don't know of any other way. First, I typed "seventh-day" and that got me all of my commentaries and other books which I dragged over to the collection and then I searched for "white" and that gave me even more. I ended up with 420 in the collection. I wish there was an easy way, there might be but I don't know it.

I called and spoke with customer service about this issue and there is no easy way to do it :-(

You have to go to "Tools", "Library", and then "Collections" and create a new collection. Then put in "White" in the searc panel. When you do it produces a list of all her writings. Mine produced 407 individual resources. You then have to click and drag each one of those resources one by one to the "+ Plus these resources:" window.

Once you have taken an hour or so to do that you can name the collection and from there easily search only her writings by phrase or word like in Logos 3.

For the SDA commentary you can follow the same procedure and create a collection for it.

I know this process stinks a bit, but it's the best we can do right now. If they would just allow you to highlight all the resources and add them at one time to the collection it would not be that bad, but alas, they don't have it programmed to work that way.

I am assuming you have the expanded edition. Can you tell me how many books you have in your SDA collection(s) I understand that you said Ellen G. White's writings came out to 407. I just made one big collection for SDA materials and am hoping that I got everything in my collection. My one big collection that includes the commentaries and all came out to be 420 titles. Would this sound correct?

I just created a SDA collection using the resources matching "white, adventist, seventh" without the quotes. After removing obvious non SDA books, my collection contains 416 books.

Not sure why you had to drag the books as mentioned in your post. When you use resources matching as mentioned above it automatically adds those books to the collection. It will say "Resulting Collection XXX" where xxx is the number of books currently in the collection. You only have to drag out the books you don't need or want.

Creating the collection and removing the unwanted books took me less than five minutes, most of that time was paging down through the collection and dragging out what I didn't want.

Thanks a million for your suggestion on how to build the collection. I can't say that I have even mastered the basics in Logos yet, so I too had spent a couple of hours building the collection. Following your example, I my collection was bumped up to 415 resources. I'm not to worried about the one that I have missed, I usually just use Logos 3's SDA home page when I use this collection.

Try this: In the field where it says "Start with resources matching:"

Enter "author:white, ellen"

That should find most of them. My collection has 402 in it.

See my post in this thread above. The whole process takes about five minutes and that's only because it picks up a few non-sda books that you may want to remove. My collection has 416 books. Yours could very slightly since its possible I might still have a few non-sda books yet to remove. Hope this helps.

Hope one of you can help me. Where do you even GET the EGW writings/resources in the first place? I've had Logos (Libronix series X (3)) ever since it was in beta. I can't seem to find anything but the SDA commentaries on logos.com.

EDIT: I found this on the R&H website: http://www.reviewandherald.com/index.php/products/profile/0828020426 . Is this what you're talking about? I assume they don't have a release for Logos 4, eh? So are you guys talking about importing from version 3 into version 4? Are you saying the version 3 resources will work in version 4 if you import them?

I was waiting for the Book Builder to come out in L4's next release to build the books myself from my Folio Search program. I didn't know this even existed!

I initially bought the "Standard Edition" without the Ellen White writings through Logos at http://www.logos.com/products/details/3441 Later I called Review and Herald and upgraded to the "Expanded Edition". The expanded edition is also available from Logos at http://www.logos.com/products/details/3442

The reason that I had to go to Review and Herald for the upgrade is since I am not truly an Adventist (just agree with some of the theology) I did not think that I would be interested in her writings. However, there are a lot of references to her writings in the other books that are a part of the standard edition and I felt that in order to get the full picture, I should read and investigate all of the available resources.

I found a resource site on the web, but preferred to have the resources along side the commentaries and such in Logos. Jared could not offer me any kind of discount because he simply resells the product for Review and Herald, so he pointed me towards them.

Finally, I noticed that the book center for Adventists has the expanded edition for a really good price, compared to other places (sorry I can't put a link here). If you can't find it by using a search engine, send me an email at rick68 at vqme com and I'll send you the link via email.

I had the program before Logos 4 and have kept version 3 on my computer. Logos 4 imported it fine. According to the wiki at http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.0d there is a scan DVD option that will search for resources if you have a CD inserted in your drive. I am assuming this is for copying resources but not 100% sure since I have never used it.

BTW, the files are still Libronix files and not Logos 4 but they work just fine.

I've never added a boxed package other than my original purchase. I've always just downloaded new paid resources.

Yes, they are. I have the SDA Commentary prioritized as my most preferred commentary and it works as hoped. The Atlas is treated as an atlas etc. Everything is considered what it is supposed to be from what I can tell.

Edit: I misread part of your post. The EGW writings are not tagged as commentaries, they are simply books. Only the actual SDA Commentary set is a commentary.

I did make various collections though and sometimes use them in searches. Such as I have an entire collection just for everything in the expanded edition, then I have a collection on EGW's health books etc.

Sorry for the numerous posts, but I just thought that I would give one more suggestion. If you are going to use the SDA resources a lot, I highly recommend installing it with Libronix version 3 then synchronizing your licenses through Libronix so that Logos 4 will pick them up as well. The reason being is that you lose some awesome functionality of the home page that is available in Libronix but not Logos 4, such as searching EGW's writings on a specific topic. To me, that is the biggie but there are a few other options available from the home page that cannot be done in Logos 4. The SDA Library was definitely designed to work with Libronix 3 and does so seamlessly, some of that functionality is lost simply because you no longer have the home page in Logos 4. I have attached a couple of screen shots to help you decide.

Well, I got my collection built in L4 with 415 resources, but now how do you search the collection?

At first I thought it just hadn't been indexed yet, but now it is fully indexed and my other collections are available for a search, but not my new EGW collection from the standard search box.

It is really just like any other search. I am not sure why yours would not be working. I also have 415 resources in my collection.

A few things that I would try:

1) if you have not already, restart your computer. This has solved a lot of problems for me! Restart Logos and see if the little icon in the system tray pops up telling you that it has started indexing again.

2) If the little indexing box does not appear. Try doing a search through your entire library for the word "judgment" and see if there is a message similar to "Some results will appear differently because your index has not been merged. Click here to merge indexes now". This is not the exact wording, I am working off of memory. Note: judgment is a very common word in my library with over 78,000 results (Scholar's Package plus a few books), so if you have a higher package than mine, it will obviously be higher.

3) If it does not ask you to merge your library, simply try a search for "judgment" in just your EGW collection and see what you get. In the picture below, you will notice that I named the collection for all 415 of my resources "Seventh Day Adventist Expanded Collection" but whatever you named yours should be of no relevance.

4) Notice that we have went from easiest to hardest so far. My last suggestion is the most time consuming. If all else fails, I would simply type "rebuild index" (without quotes) in the command bar and let it completely start over. I have had to do this several times in the past, especially with 4.0c when I bought new books. I have not bought any recently (since 4.0d) and am kind of hoping that I don't have to rebuild the entire index every time that I buy a new book. I guess I'll have to wait and see. [:)]

Other than those 4 things, I truly would have no idea since it appears that your books are fully loaded in Logos 4 and readable.

At first I wanted to do BIBLE SEARCH instead of a BASIC SEARCH like I would in other resources that mention that word search in the bible text. Apparently the EGW resources don't have the Bible verses mentioned hyperlinked, so that will never work... maybe when the book builder is released it can be rebuilt?

But doing a BASIC SEARCH through the collection works like a charm as it should; it searches phrases, words, etc,. in the EGW writings just fine.

Thanks again for everyone's help! I'm really enjoying this new resource. What's really cool is (as you probably know) you can custom highlight the EGW resources (or any other) and do some really cool searches based on your highlighted text after you've done enough reading/highlighting. Sure makes locating things you want to keep fresh on very easy! Logos 4 sure takes studying and reviewing to the next level!

Oh, and BTW, the CD-rom is about 1/4 the list price right now if you look hard enough (ABC).

I am not 100% sure about your meaning on the above quote (I'm sure it is my lack of understanding instead of your description <sometimes I don't comprehend well>). You do know that there are scriptural and topical indexes of Mrs. White's writings in the package? In Logos 4 they are available by opening up your library and typing "ellen white index" and simply click on them to open them. You then navigate to the reference that you want to research and all of her writings on that particular area will be available as links.

I'm not sure if you decided to install Libronix 3 or not but you can get these indexes automatically from the "Home Page" by typing your reference in the Scriptural Index box and Libronix automatically jumps to both indexes (numbers 1 and 2 on my snipping) and your preferred translation (#3).

It sounds as if you got your software very quickly! I'm happy for you about that and I am even more happy that you found a solution to the problem you mentioned about the searches. Happy studying!! [:D]

Another frustrating thing, is after I've made a collection of EGW writings minus the commentaries, when I go to search, generally I've found when searching by bible text you have to put a "." at the end (i.e. "John 3:16." NOT "John 3:16"). Otherwise all the texts I tried to fiddle around with gave me 0 hits.

But of course you have to do two searches. Abbreviated Book and full name

Revelation 19:6. = 1 hits
Rev. 19:6. = 9 hits

I put bible text in quotations marks because i want just that reference to show up not Rev. or some other reference like Rev 9:xx

Although recognised as a bible reference this format doesn't search for "John 3:16" only e.g. it will also find Jn:3.1-17, which includes v16. You will have to use <=Jn3.16> for an exact match. Of course this only works for bible references that are tagged, and they can appear in any format in the text e.g. v16, Jn 3:16. See wiki help at http://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELP

SEARCH with ["John 3:16"] (with quotes)

This will pick up tagged and untagged references provided they appear exactly as quoted. It will miss " v16", "Jn 3:16" and it will erroneously include "1 John 3:16", "John 3:16-17".

The truth will lie between the results of <=Jn3.16> and "John 3:16", except for untagged references not matching the latter!
