After looking for any capability (installed software) or plan (FAQs) to do simple concordance-type searches (find all instances in a verse range of a word or phrase), I'm left with the sinking feeling that I'm going to have to install other Bible software in order to have that capability.

Unfortunately, that's one of the things I expect for the way I use smartphone Bible software.

Here's what I need (& previously used with non-Logos software) to answer ad hoc questions that seem to come up when there's either no time to fire up L4 or no access to my laptop at all:

  1. Access to an English Bible verion's underlying Greek or Hebrew, morph info, & the appropriate info from a lexicon. (Other software handled this with Strongs # lookup from an enhanced KJV---close enough to answer an ad hoc question even if it isn't my preferred translation.) Android's bible word study may get me close to this capability, if it gives me access to lexical info. Until now, have been trying to get my installation stable... will check this out. If not, I'll have to find an alternative...perhaps an exhaustive concordance? (Lockwood had one in one of their collections, that I have in L4... will check to see if it's in Android)...
  2. Simple search for word/words or exact phrase --- absolotely necessary to help me find "Where in the Bible does it say....?" don't know how to do this in current beta, & FAQs don't seem to say it's there or planned.
  3. English dictionary. Would love to have an L4 type keylink to get to it, but I can live with the slider & paging for Mirriam-Webster's Collegiate dictionary already downloaded.
  4. At least one single-volume commentary or study Bible type resource. Haven't had time yet to figure out what in my L4 library that's available to Android might fill this bill. Maybe it's there.
  5. Several Bible Dictionaries - availability of ISBE is a huge plus & more than meets this need.

Many thanks for what you've already done... looking awesome...

Grace & Peace,
Bill

I have downloaded a reverse interlinear (ESV) plus my preferred lexicon to get that access, albeit BWS will not work in flight mode. But accessing the downloaded lexicon is much quicker than fetching the information from a server.

I would like that.

I would like direct entry to work in flight mode ("reference not recognised").

NASB95 is an RI, & this seems to work ok... are you saying BWS won't work AT ALL if I turn off 3G & wifi--even though I've downloaded everything I want it to link to? (I haven't tried that, yet.) Morph data is better than my old app. With BWS does help me answer the frequent question I get in a discussion about Bible--"Was that 'you' singular or plural?" When BWS will work in "flight" mode (if I'm understanding you), I'll be a happy camper.

Still, I may end up downloading an original text, based on an issue in Mt 21:31, where every English translation of proago adds text for which there is no Greek (before; in front of; ahead of; etc.). RI / BWS aren't much help in sorting that kind of problem out on the android app, where it was obvious when strong's numbers were embedded in the text next to each word (in my last handheld app).

To me, this feels like a glaring omission, especially since the NAS Exhaustive Concordance is so hard to use to offset its lack. At minimum, we should be able to serach a bible verse range that included either a word, or any / all words in a phrase. It'd be nice to have the same capability in a "basic" search of a book, too, but we really do need Bible search. That's the most common question I get when I don't have my laptop... "Do you know where in the Bible it says, '....?' "

Same here. It'd be even nicer to be able to pick between 2 entries when we press & hold on an english word: BWS or Dictionary Lookup.

  • I agree with BillS. I really miss this basic feature in Logos for Android. I think this is a more relevant and useful function to have in an Android Phone Bible than advanced stuff as "Word Study", "Comparison" and "Passage Guide". If the team of programmers will not implant a word search function in coming versions, the app will be rather useless for me.

Agree with Bill S. A word or phrase search is absolutely necessary. Also, word/phrase highlight and notes so I can later access hese on my laptop. Otherwise, I'll go back to using Cadre Bible on my Android.

I agree search capability is ESSENTIAL  Results must come up in biblical order.  I have logos (no search) , and youversion (search results in random order = next to useless) and Olivetree which has a search that works.  I would like to use Logos exclusively.

Just came here today to see if there was something I was missing about how to do a search on the Android app. From the above posts, looks like it just isn't there.

My $.02: VITAL. Please get search capability for this app!

My question is how did you download your reverse interlinear  and where did you download it from?, it would really be a tremendous help to me if you could inform me to where and how to do it on a samsung tablet, thanks in advance for your reply.

    Hi Xavian

The reverse interlinear information is contained within the same file as the Bible - for those which support revint capability.

So to download the ESV - for example - including revint info - go to the Library, find the ESV, click on the small arrow to the right and press the "Download" button.

    Hope this helps

How does one know if they have revint capability?

    Glenn,

Do you have a base package with Greek/Hebrew language resources? An RI?

If the Bible has RI capability in L4, it also has it in Android.

So the answer to your question really goes back to L4.

Common Bibles with RI capability include ESV, NIV84 (NT only, so far; don't know about later editions); NASB95, NRSV. Since Android prefers NAS for RI for public domain users, I believe that one also has RI capability.

Which ones do you have access to in L4? Android?

To check whether a Bible you have on android has RI capability, select a word & "hover" on it. If BWS includes morph info, you have RI on that Bible.

    Blessings!

    Grace & Peace,
    Bill

I only want to underline BillS's wish for an off-line search function. I'm not always online on Internet with my Android-phone, neither through wireless network nor through my mobile network, when I want to search for something in my bibles or books on Logos.

    Please…

I'm going to have to chime in here.

Because of my needs; I don't mind having limited access to my library while offline if I've not downloaded my whole library, but being able to search while offline is something that I'd really like to have...it's very desireable.

I agree that the simple functionality of search within current book is also needed. I don't know if they are including that or not, but if not, they sure ought to. When I saw "full" I interpreted it as "the works, everything" including simple find. I might be wrong. If the word online is intended to mean ONLY online and nothing else, then this would be disappointing.

    Same here...

To be clear, I'm NOT saying I don't WANT full cross-library search. Just that I NEED the off-line... I can't afford an unlimited data plan. When I'm 3G only, I don't want to burn the limited data use that I have... I really do NEED an offline search... and I'm MUCH, MUCH, MUCH appreciative of what we ALREADY have in this gem of an app.

Many thanks & blessings to Logos for having provided it.

    Thanks Bill,

Tried to reply from an Android phone, but it just highlights the text area. I can't type into it. Matter of fact, my virtual keyboard doesn't even pop up! Ah, the wonders of new technology!

You were exactly right. I just didn't know how to operate the function. Works great on HTC Incredible running  version  2.2.

And I must also chime in that the main feature I've been waiting for was the search function that sold me on LOGOS back when I bought the "Home LIbrary" version of Libronix. Yeah, I've been involved that far back. As a newly reformed agnostic then, the search function was my greatest tool in learning and growing. I'm sure programming isn't that simple or Windows would always work! However, compared to bells and whistles, the ability to pull up a phrase by search function would be the most beneficial feature while answering someone's questions. Online won't work when we are in the slums in Kibera in Kenya.

Till then, paper and pencil notes will have to do.
