4.6a Beta 1 (4.61.0.3169) will ship later this evening or early tomorrow.

To update to Beta 1 when it ships, use the Update Now command if you’ve switched to the beta channel before, or the Set Update Channel to Beta command if you’re on a stable version (such as 4.6 SR-2). To install Beta 1 from scratch, see the notes and download links on this thread.

Due to a number of reported crashes (http://community.logos.com/forums/t/54834.aspx), I've pulled the beta.

The crashes appear to be linked to having Word Find Documents. If you have none, you may be able to safely run the beta by manually installing it from the links at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/52967.aspx. Or you can wait for 4.6a Beta 2, which should fix the problem.

I asked the same question in the other thread, but I thought I would ask it here too so that more people will read it.

"Word Find" or (Word Search) puzzles. They are transitioning to sync v2 and the conversion is crashing the app for some users.

I removed all of my "Word Find Puzzles" a few days ago, so I was not affected by the crash issue. I created a puzzle on the Beta 1 and no crash is experienced, however, I do notice that the puzzle regenerated each time the file is opened. I don't recall seeing this activity in previous releases.

Have you tried Mark's solution here? http://community.logos.com/forums/t/54834.aspx

It worked for me.

I couldn't find that file consequently I am "dead in the water"! While I certainly expect "bugs" I DID NOT expect to be rendered inoperable!

Bob, have you asked windows to show hidden files?

Had to hit the alt tab to bring up the other menu.

Bob - I understand that you are upset… please take my comments here with the grace they are intended… Smile

When you participate in beta, you must expect that you will have crashes, software that doesn't work, etc. That is the purpose of the beta program – to work out those issues. A beta program is not "a way to see new features first." Personally, I don't run the early betas for just this reason. I wait until some of the early kinks have been worked out, but even then it can be a gamble.  It is very important to always switch to stable once a version goes live so that you are not surprised with an update at an inopportune time.

On a Mac it should be

/Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Documents/{random}/Documents/WordFind

Mark,

Am I to delete the entire folder? I did see that folder but did not delete it. I did delete the documents in it but that did not allow me to start and use L4.

As I said in an earlier post, I did expect bugs. I have been working with these betas a long time but I have never been rendered inoperable as a result!

Hi Bob,

I don't have the problem, and I don't have a Mac, so my initial post was guess-work based on experience with Logos 4 Windows. I'm afraid I can't be of much more help (though deleting the whole WordFind folder might be worth a try).

But I feel your pain. There was a bug in the beta about 18 months ago that left my without a working copy Logos - on a Friday when I hadn't finished my sermons! I spent the whole week remotely accessing my office computer which had an older version of Logos on it. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long.

Mark

Bradley, I thought I would point out, and as you well know, that Logos has a reputation of putting out buggy software.  One of the items of this Beta was sync2 for the word search documents.  As soon as this beta was released, the program crashed for everyone who has word search documents.  It is clear that this part of the new code was not tested.  If it was, then the crash would have been found and fixed before it would have been sent out to the public.

IMHO, just because you slap the word beta on the program does not give the option not to test their product first.  As a beta tester, I expect Logos to do their alpha testing first before I start beta testing.

I think you're assuming that simply having a Word Find document causes the crash, which is not the case. The crash happens when processing specific content inside the saved Word Find Document. Could testing have been more thorough? Yes. Is it true "that this part of the new code was not tested"? No.

We could have shipped 4.6a Beta 1 the day after 4.6 was released, but we didn't because we have been doing internal alpha testing between then and now. We try to catch everything we can before shipping Beta 1, but sometimes things slip through. That's why we provide warnings (http://community.logos.com/forums/t/52967.aspx) about the potential dangers of using what is explicitly labelled as beta software.
