I think this is a pretty straightforward, sensible, and useful suggestion: please put the page number into the locator bar so that we don't need to search the text for our page location.

Does this help at all?

Not really, unfortunately, because even if I do that, once I scroll (or scroll a linked resource) it moves to the citation form there again. This is why I'd love to see it displayed in the Locator bar - it seems like the natural place to show it

It already does.  Note the leftmost oval in the screengrab.  It is also possible to have the page # display in the exact location of the transition—use the menu in the trinity symbol to the right of the reference.  Note the oval in the center.

You're quite right, it does. That's a bug I haven't seen before. I'll write up a bug report for you.

EDIT: BUG 5.2a RC1: Page numbers reverts to references.

George, it only shows the page number in the search field if you've added a page number there - it isn't consistent.

I have the page numbers implemented from the visual filter menu – my problem is that it isn't immediately accessible, particularly if my resource windows are smaller (which they often are).

As mentioned, the Locator bar seems like a very natural place to have it always showing

I'd say that's a very bad place for it, since most people probably hide the locator bar when using the resource in a small panel. The natural place for it is in the reference box, which is always visible, and that's where it used to be, and where it'll be again once the bug is fixed.

I'd agree with Danny (the reference box is a disaster), and fgh (the locator box is often hidden).  Whoever worked on the early L4 probably knows what the logic was for the reference box with a variable/unpredicatable contents.  I assume it was the 'clean look' that the Libronix icon violated.

That's one biggie I still enjoy on Libby ... control of the display.

While I was 'checking out' Danny's suggestion, I noticed on just one window of my 5-window layout: (1) a resource with NO reference box (even though it has chapters etc), (2) a resource that dutifully shows page numbers without the page number option checked (even though the resource never had page numbers), and of course (3) the multi-indexed resource in which case I'm never sure what index might be displayed (eg DSS).  The latter problem is often headachy especially when you have liinked resources.

I'm guessing it won't be fixed.  It's got way too many problems.

I don't know, nevertheless, there it is.  I assume you can see it.  If you can't I think you need more and different help from what I, anyone in the forum or at Logos can offer you.  I would suggest that you pay a visit to your ophthalmologist.  As for its not being consistent, a commentary may list the verse to which it refers rather than the page number, but you can scroll slightly up or down to reveal the page.

Well, now, that was cute.  I clicked on my DSSE's reference box to see what index it was using. That in turn crashed my linked QSM.   Which in turn brought up the '+', with only DSSSE as a parallel choice, and a stack of really BIG book covers.  I thought for a minute I'd be able to scratch out another way to crash L5 (the L6 deadline is fast approaching but I think I can still ace the most ways to crash L5).

my eyes are just fine dude. As you can see from above, there is a bug in the reference box. And as for scrolling up and down, it isn't always just a "slight" up and down depending on the book size. Page numbers are an important part of academic citation, and it would be nice if it was effortless (like a regular book) to see the page number rather than having to hunt for it. Scrolling in a linked resource starts scrolling everything else too - all to find something that ideally should be plain as day.

p.s. I never said I needed any help :-) This is a suggestion thread and I've made a suggestion.

I agree with the points Danny has made. I know that it is possible to see the page number by scrolling and/or by clicking in the reference box, but when I'm working on a paper that makes for a lot of extra scrolling or clicking!

It doesn't necessarily have to be in the locator bar, but I would like an option to display the page number permanently somewhere in the interface so that I can see at a glance what page I'm on.

Thanks,

Michael

In most books you can see the page number in the reference bar as indicated in the attached.  Of course, you must have the page number display enabled.

Hi George,

Thanks for the quick reply. This would suit my needs if the page number always displayed in the reference bar, but this doesn't appear to be the case in Logos 6? Please try this:

  1. Open a resource which displays text rather than page numbers by default (maybe a dictionary?). In my case I am looking at BDAG, which by default shows the name of Greek word in the reference bar.
  2. Click on it to display the page number.
  3. Scroll down until you reach a new entry. The reference bar reverts back to showing the Greek word rather than page number.

Can you replicate this? If I could display the page number all the time (or even better, if both the text and page number would display together in the reference bar) that would meet my needs.

Blessings,

M.

It's true that lexica and the like have text (word selected, entry in bible dictionaries), but why would you want the page # in those items since reference is generally made to the word or entry.  E.g., Yale Anchor Bible Dictionary, s.v. "Asshur,"

I just used BDAG as an example. The same applies in e.g. commentaries, where the Bible reference will be shown in preference to the page number.

Yes, commentaries will show the text reference rather than the page # in the reference bar (oval A).  Note, however, that when you have page #s displayed it will also display them inline (oval B).

Thanks. I was aware of this, but it can be inconvenient to have to scroll up/down to find the inline display (as Danny mentioned). I'd prefer to have the page #  visible in the reference bar (or some other location) all the time.

How about an overlay with something like a watermark showing the page # in LARGE letters?

That could work. Personally I'd be happy if the page # in the reference bar remainder there when scrolling. In fgh's post earlier in this thread a bug report was mentioned (but obviously not actioned) so maybe I should file a bug report rather than a new feature request?
