Poll: Full Posts or Partial Posts?

If you haven't been over to the blog recently, please go check it out. We've completely redesigned it and made some changes that we think you'll like.

If you have any feedback on it, please let us know in this thread.

One question in particular that I'm interesting in getting some feedback on is whether you prefer the home page to show full posts or only the first portion of the post with a link to continue reading. There are pros and cons to both approaches, and I'm interested to hear what you like better (or which one bothers you the most!).

Yes, there are pros and cons to both, but having to reload the page to read the full post would definitely bother me, so if you do decide to show only partial posts, please use the alternative that makes the posts expand and collapse on the same page, rather than the one that opens them on a new page. And leave the most recent post expanded. If you do that, I might prefer partials; if not, I prefer full posts.

I voted for full posts because I'd like the current one to be that way. However, as an alternative idea I'd prefer older posts to be abbreviated and expandable on the page. That way I can more quickly scan to see any older posts I may have missed.

How about if the "continue reading" used Ajax to instantly load the rest of the post without having to leave the page? I just set it up that way to test it, so give it a try and let me know what you think.

I like it, I wouldn't call it instant but it's reasonably quick.

I like that Phil. The only downside for the blog is that it conceals comments, I'm not sure what the full solution is, but I think you're onto it.

Not that I have a clue what Ajax is, but it seems to do what I want -- except that I also want a "collapse again" link at the end of expanded posts.

Wow, I've never had this much support for an idea of mine before!* And I've certainly never had one implemented within 3 hours! Wish you could fix all my bugs that fast as well! [:D]

*(Well, I guess making that comprehensive Notes suggestion on Uservoice was my idea originally, and that has certainly gained support (now at #5), but since MJ did all the work, I hesitate to count that.)

Yeah. I think we need to see the comments when it's expanded. I don't want to have to go to another page just to see them, or if we have to, then there should be some sort of link at the end of the post indicating where the comments are. How to get to the comments isn't currently that clear.

Comments have been disabled on the blog anyway, as they're now sending people over to the forum to discuss blog posts. So this concern would only apply to older posts that have comments on them, but going forward it's a moot point.

The comments aren't disabled. If you click on the comment count at the top of a post, it will take you to a place to leave blog comments-- where you'll also find the FB comments.

And there is no link to the forum thread, as far as I can tell.

Yes you're right, in fact that was the case before the redesign. But it's now a problem with the new design.
