Reference Search
The Apostolic Fathers Greek-English Interlinear (by Rick Brennan) recently downloaded. On the promo it says, If you reference search the Apostolic Fathers Greek-English Interlinear for 1 Ti 4.16, you’ll find the above two references (and two more that actually talk about condemnation instead of salvation). I have tried to do this to no avail. I tried to follow the instructions on the Logos Wiki for doing a reference search, but it still shows no hits. How can I do a reference search on this resource?

I don't know what to tell you. Logos messed up the reference search which was in L3 when they put in the "Cited by" function in L4. Since then I've had to go to L3 whenever I want to do a reference search. Complain, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN. Perhaps they'll listen (though they don't listen to me).

I don't see any notes in the text that indicate a quotation as I do in other sources that show in passage. What makes you expect it to show?
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

George,
I was never a serious L3 user, but over the weekend I did have occasion to use the "reference browser" in L3 for a friend. Is that what you're referring to?
In L4 I do reference searches using the "<book ch:verse>" search syntax (including the angle brackets). This has always seemed to work very well for me. I used it last night in fact to search for verse references just in Wallace's GGBTB. Is there some capability of the reference browser in L3 that's missing in L4? (I guess I'm thinking strictly of Biblical references.)
Thanks,
Donnie

I donno about that. Could you give a specific example. E.g., the OP mentioned 1 Tim 4.16 in the Apostolic Fathers (I use Holmes edition though I also have Lake and Lightfoot — I presume you would know that I wouldn't get the interlinear).

I don't have the interlinear, but I do have the Apostolic fathers collection.
I couldn't find 1Tim 4:16 in the AF, but when I did a reference search for 1Tim 4:15, I did get hits:
("Ancient Texts - Apostolic Fathers - Greek" is a collection I created of the AF in Greek)
I'll assume that the Apostolic Fathers Greek-English Interlinear has additional notes that my copies of the AF don't have, since Logos said that the reference search would find hits for 1Tim 4:16.
I also have The New Testament in the Apostolic Fathers, which does note a reference to 1Tim 4:16 in 2Clement 15:1. But that is the only one.
Maybe someone who actually has the interlinear can post an example. [:)]

Thanks. That clariies the matter. I was wondering whether he was speaking of entering it in the command line — a search makes more sense.

Here's what I was referring to from Rick Brennan's blogpost last week found at http://blog.logos.com/2011/10/why-the-apostolic-fathers-are-helpful/

Here's where the reference is for the first instance:
I have not been able to find it through the search dialog however. I've tried <1Tim 4:16>, <1Ti 4.16>, <bible = 1 Timothy 4:16>, and ensured that the search included footnotes each time.
EDIT: clarified that this only shows one of the two places where this text is supposed to be cited. I didn't check the other. But the search results don't care about that.

Thanks Richard. I did find the reference in the tiny lettering, but these cross-references are pretty hard to find if they can't be found in the search dialog. I have tried the same search you did, but to no avail.

Is that footnote actually tagged as a bible reference? If you click on the footnote marker to make the footnote stick, can you then click on the reference?

I don't know how it's tagged, but if you click the footnote and then the reference, it does open the Bible to 1Tim 4:16.

I'll look into this on Wednesday morning. I'm fairly sure I tested the search while writing the blog post, but it is also possible I was using a version of the resource different from the one that was released.
There are some other corrections that need to be integrated (mostly in sequence numbering, nothing huge), so I'll get those in as well. I'll report back on this thread with details once I have them.
Thanks for the report.

I too have the same problem, not being able to get 1 Tim 4:16 to show up as a search result. I don't know if it makes a difference or not but when I put my cursor over the entry in 2 Clement, the pop up shows "1 Timothy 4:16" but when I click on it, it changes to "1 Ti".
It's probably unrelated but I wasn't sure.

Looking forward to report, using Logos 4.5 Beta 3 am unable to search footnote text of English Literal Translation for "1 Ti 4.16".
Using an old utility (IEHIBALL) and page view showing footnotes, found 2nd Clement 10:5 has a literal translation d footnote:
By the way, utility IEHIBALL is pronounced: "IEH" "I" "Ball"

Hi KS4J
Looking forward to report, using Logos 4.5 Beta 3 am unable to search footnote text of English Literal Translation for "1 Ti 4.16".
No report yet. There's a possibility it is an indexer issue and not a resource issue (or, more likely, some strange confluence between the two). It'll just take a little longer to work out than I'd initially thought. But we haven't forgotten about it.

Hi folks.
Time for the report.
Rick Brannan (Personal) said:There's a possibility it is an indexer issue and not a resource issue (or, more likely, some strange confluence between the two).
Thanks to some expert help from Bradley Grainger, we've determined it looks like the answer was behind door #3, "some strange confluence between the two." To fix the text as it exists would require an indexer update, which requires a software update, which doesn't help anyone out any time soon. So I've migrated the footnotes up from the gloss to the main text line, and in this position they are properly indexed. Bradley has already addressed the indexer problem, so if this situation arises again, it won't be a problem.
Apologies for the problems. I will shortly be submitting the resource so it can be prepared for delivery to users, uploaded, etc. Not sure when it will filter down, but will do my best to ensure it is sooner than later.
Thanks for your patience as we worked this out!

Thanks Rick and Bradley for addressing this and for putting in motion and interim solution. I'm sure you had other things you both had planned to work on before this came along.

Has anybody heard an update as to when this will be rolled out?

Hi all, I noticed that Rick posted on 10/21 that the problem had been identified and solved. It's been about 5 weeks and I haven't downloaded a new version or heard anything. I know things take time and it's probably not at the top of the priority list (and patience is one of the many areas God is working on in me.)
I just wanted to make sure that a fix hadn't come out and I just happened to miss it.

Appears Logos 4.5 Beta 7 does not have fix.

Right ! Praying for patience is like saying [using the old "Laugh-in" phrase] "Sock it to me !"

Thanks indeed for sharing the verse from Romans! And that can make us beautiful -- by God! *smile*
You reminded me of a devotion I saved once upon a time, written by Ken Klaus, former speaker on The Lutheran Hour. Please permit me to share!
Ken Klaus -
"Beauty Within"
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! Psalm 51:1-2Many of the ladies listening to me have pearl earrings, a pearl pin, or a pearl ring. Have you ever considered how a pearl is the product of pain? Those who know such things tell me that when a foreign substance -- an irritant, usually a grain of sand -- gets into the oyster's shell, it causes pain. That's when the oyster coats the grain of sand with a substance called nacre; layer after layer coats the irritant.
The end result is the formation of a beautiful pearl. The custom, I've noticed, is not confined to pearls. Some of the wonderful people I am blessed to know have done much the same thing in their lives.
Somehow, somewhere, sin and Satan managed to introduce an irritant into their lives. It may be something small or it can be something terrible and tragic. Now these people could allow the irritant to destroy them. They could, but they don't. Instead of giving in to despair, they go to the Lord. Through His Word and Sacrament, through the ministrations of the Holy Spirit, these suffering souls are given hope with their trouble and peace for their hearts.
Truly, the Lord gives them layer after layer of His help so their pain is covered and they can be at ease once more. But God provides a better benefit that the mere disappearance of pain. These people, having conquered their problem by God's grace, often find a beautiful pearl has been produced inside them, and their lives take on a value they didn't have before. And they know God has given them something wonderful, beautiful, and valuable.
THE PRAYER: Dear gracious and merciful Lord, I give thanks -- in Your steadfast love You have removed my sins; that You have through Jesus' blood, washed me from my transgressions. Now I ask You for Your help in conquering the remaining irritants in my life. Make of my life a beautiful witness to Jesus, my Saviour. In His Name. Amen.
Philippians 4: 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand..........

I think there was an internal miscommunication compounded by my absence (was at ETS and SBL, then out over the holiday). The resource work has been done, I'll see about getting it ready for distribution.
Thanks for the reminders, and apologies for the circumstance that caused the delay in releasing a fix.
