Reference Search

I was never a serious L3 user, but over the weekend I did have occasion to use the "reference browser" in L3 for a friend. Is that what you're referring to?

In L4 I do reference searches using the "<book ch:verse>" search syntax (including the angle brackets). This has always seemed to work very well for me. I used it last night in fact to search for verse references just in Wallace's GGBTB. Is there some capability of the reference browser in L3 that's missing in L4? (I guess I'm thinking strictly of Biblical references.)

I donno about that.  Could you give a specific example.  E.g., the OP mentioned 1 Tim 4.16 in the Apostolic Fathers (I use Holmes edition though I also have Lake and Lightfoot — I presume you would know that I wouldn't get the interlinear).

Thanks.  That clariies the matter.  I was wondering whether he was speaking of entering it in the command line — a search makes more sense.

There are some other corrections that need to be integrated (mostly in sequence numbering, nothing huge), so I'll get those in as well. I'll report back on this thread with details once I have them.

Using an old utility (IEHIBALL) and page view showing footnotes, found 2nd Clement 10:5 has a literal translation d footnote:

By the way, utility IEHIBALL is pronounced: "IEH" "I" "Ball"

No report yet. There's a possibility it is an indexer issue and not a resource issue (or, more likely, some strange confluence between the two). It'll just take a little longer to work out than I'd initially thought. But we haven't forgotten about it.

Appreciate update; looking forward to electronic search for 1 Ti 4:16 in Apostolic Fathers (plus other improvements).

Thanks Rick and Bradley for addressing this and for putting in motion and interim solution.  I'm sure you had other things you both had planned to work on before this came along.

Hi all, I noticed that Rick posted on 10/21 that the problem had been identified and solved. It's been about 5 weeks and I haven't downloaded a new version or heard anything. I know things take time and it's probably not at the top of the priority list (and patience is one of the many areas God is working on in me.)

I just wanted to make sure that a fix hadn't come out and I just happened to miss it.

As far as I can tell, no update has been published (yet). I'll ping Rick and find out what's going on.

Right !  Praying for patience is like saying [using the old "Laugh-in" phrase] "Sock it to me !"

You reminded me of a devotion I saved once upon a time, written by Ken Klaus, former speaker on The Lutheran Hour.  Please permit me to share!

"Beauty Within"

     Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! Psalm 51:1-2

     Many of the ladies listening to me have pearl earrings, a pearl pin, or a pearl ring.  Have you ever considered how a pearl is the product of pain?  Those who know such things tell me that when a foreign substance -- an irritant, usually a grain of sand -- gets into the oyster's shell, it causes pain. That's when the oyster coats the grain of sand with a substance called nacre; layer after layer coats the irritant.

          The end result is the formation of a beautiful pearl.  The custom, I've noticed, is not confined to pearls. Some of the wonderful people I am blessed to know have done much the same thing in their lives.

          Somehow, somewhere, sin and Satan managed to introduce an irritant into their lives. It may be something small or it can be something terrible and tragic.

          Now these people could allow the irritant to destroy them. They could, but they don't. Instead of giving in to despair, they go to the Lord. Through His Word and Sacrament, through the ministrations of the Holy Spirit, these suffering souls are given hope with their trouble and peace for their hearts.

          Truly, the Lord gives them layer after layer of His help so their pain is covered and they can be at ease once more.   But God provides a better benefit that the mere disappearance of pain. These people, having conquered their problem by God's grace, often find a beautiful pearl has been produced inside them, and their lives take on a value they didn't have before.   And they know God has given them something wonderful, beautiful, and valuable.

THE PRAYER: Dear gracious and merciful Lord, I give thanks --  in Your steadfast love You have removed my sins; that You have through Jesus' blood, washed me from my transgressions. Now I ask You for Your help in conquering the remaining irritants in my life. Make of my life a beautiful witness to Jesus, my Saviour. In His Name. Amen.
