Prices Are Falling

The total price for the four Community Pricing titles about to close for bidding was $50 yesterday, but is down to $37 today and may yet fall further. (I think the total price was $59 initially.)

One of the main reasons for the fall is that there has been ample time between the announcement that bids are closing and the actual closure. There's a suggestion that this should always be at least a week here:

This is an example of where community pricing is working phenomenally well. Each of the following resources has crossed the 100% threshold, and have then gone on to a lower price. For those not currently involved in these resources, this is a great way to add bulk to your library if you have a passing interested in any of the subjects covered.

How well would Travel Through Bible Lands integrate into Biblical Places in L4? I can't see myself reading through any of these but if they provide good reference material that's easily accessible through the tools I already use, they could be worth having.

No risk at all. You have 30 days, perhaps even longer, AFTER it's released to decide whether to keep it or not. But if you snooze on a low CP price, you lose, because after the CP bidding time is over, the "buy-in" price goes way, way up!!!

Wouldn't it be great if we always had a at least a week until bids closed? I think smaller increments would have brought the total even lower, with Travel Through Bible Lands going for $12 or less.

Reading through them is precisely what I envision. I hardly think they would qualify as study resources, but they might make good reading—old travelogues.

I would agree but... Most of these items have been waiting for bidders for monthes and some have been sitting for years. We dont need longer closing periods, we need more people to change their bidding habits.We need less last minute bidders.And I think Logos has done something better than extending the time, they are alerting people by e-mail (am I the only one who has noticed this?).

Another negative response on the forums. I guess this is a 'no' Evan. Yes, it would be good in some ways if people changed their bidding habits and I'm not sure how you can think that you are the only one to notice emails arriving in their inbox, but I still think that the majority of Logos users aren't logging on to the forums every day to see if bidding is about to close. I also think that many are too busy to respond to emails within two or three days regarding bids they are about to miss out on if they don't up their bids.

I would still like to suggest that a longer minimum closing period would be a good thing. I accept that there are other changes that would be good, but these are not necessarily mutually exclusive and, yes, I am grateful that Logos is experimenting with/introducing new ways to encourage bidding. I think often contributors to the forums conclude 'no' because it doesn't include their own wishes. (Sorry, Evan, if this doesn't apply to you. I'm not sure that it does, but I did fancy a rant about negativity on the forums and, yes, I guess this falls into the same trap in some ways.)

I agree that it would be useful to extend the closing period, but probably not as useful as the email reminders that have just started to come.

In any case, I'd be far more interested in seeing a smaller granularity of bid increment. Getting a price down from $30 to $20 with $10 increments is rarely possible, but with $1 increments a lower price is often acheivable. I think the bid increment should automatically be reduced to $1 or $2 once a product goes over the top. I think that this would be better for acheiving a lower price than extending the minimum closing period but there is no harm in having both.

Not necessarily no. But I dont think it will be as helpful as your hoping. I think those who are last minutes bidders will remain to be so and all it will do is slow down publication.

I'd say that it appears to have made quite a difference with bigger falls in prices (and so presumably resources going out to a greater number of bidders) on items with a longer closing time, than on items with a 2-3 day closing time.

I also think that there are probably a range of strategies being used by last minute bidders. Depending on how much I want a product, how expensive it is and how much has been written about it favourably on the forums just prior to closing, my bidding strategy is changed accordingly. So for some items, I'll bid high, for others, I'll bid on peak, for yet others, I bid just below the peak to show strong interest without rushing items out of CP if there are lots of other items closing around the same time, and then there are the vaguely interesting items, for which I'll bid low and then reassess when I get an email to say that bids are closing. I suspect that others may have an even wider range of strategies, so the unfavourable last-minute bidders may not be as easily categorised as they often are in the forums.

I'm not sure that an extra few days until closing will really slow down the actual publication though. The final stages of publication seem to be quite varied and little dependent on the actual closing date for bids. I can't say that I have inside knowledge though, so I'm happy to stand corrected.

I think the best strategy is to bid what you are willing to pay or slightly less. When it is about to close you will be notified regarding your status and have a chance to change your bid if you desire (not necessary if your bid is higher than or equal to the current level).

BTW: I strongly suggest that you not bid overly high no matter how much you want a resource since that can depress bidding if most are unwilling to bid that high.

Agreed, George. I don't think I ever bid overly-high. I'll continue to bid low on some resources that I'm not sure about, and then reassess when those who really want the resource have had a chance to convince me to jump in. Sometimes I jump and sometimes I don't but, either way, I feel I'm making a more informed decision.
