Justin Martyr - 1st Apology

For some reason, I don't remember exactly why when I was in school I wanted to know more about some of the earliest Christian writings and so made a special order from the school bookstore of Cyril C. Richardson's Early Christian Fathers.  My dead-tree edition has been quite heavily used by me over the years.  It was with amazement when I saw this book at CCEL, since it is relatively recent, yet when I did a search of copyright renewals, it was not there and so should be public domain.

I have toyed with creating a Personal Book edition of this for a while.  I wanted to wait until I understood more about making things a datatype target before attempting any of it.  But because I wanted a modern edition of these texts in Logos, I have created a PB of the section on Justin Martyr - both the introduction and the text of the 1st Apology.

In creating this edition I changed the footnote numbers from the CCEL edition by starting with 1.  In the print edition,  it also starts with 1, but after going up to 99 it restarts at 1 instead of going into 3 digits - so a bit over half the footnote numbers here match the print edition.

The Page numbers are those of the Cyril Richardson book, but the actual text of this section is from Edward Rochie Hardy.  I have tried to tag as many links as makes sense.  I actually hesitate from releasing this here because Logos does offer the Apology of Justin in English - but in an edition about a century older.

Of course, I can dream of having the even more up to date edition of both Apologies from Paulist Press in Logos...

Might even want to think in terms of buying the Logos' early fathers which is also well-linked. Maybe not. Depends.

I'd be quite interested in that work also, Kenneth!            *smile*

Things have been so frenetic for me for the past little while that I think I'm going to have to put off for a while the making of this Personal Book.  I DO have the 1885 ante-Nicene Fathers Logos edition to hold me over.                Thanks for all the work you do for us all and for sharing!

Could you please put a link to the Wiki so we can find the file again when we're ready to make a move?           Blessings and Peace and Joy!  *smile*

As I mentioned in my Athenagoras update about a week ago, I wanted to recompile my PB's of the Library of Christian Classics so they are recognized as in the same series as the Calvin which I have in a proper Logos edition. Before recompiling with updated metadata, I added a few more language tags, as well as a few links to other Logos books.

Thanks Ken for all the fine work on these! They look very useful and interesting!

I am struggling with how best to incorporate these into my library, based on the Page Numbers I see.

Here are the 4 docx files I have downloaded, with their page numbers:

Richardson Early Christian Fathers - pages 1-397

Richardson Early Christian Fathers - Justin - pages 225-289

Richardson Early Christian Fathers - Apostolic Fathers - pages 1-143

Richardson Early Christian Fathers - Athenagoras - pages 290-340

How are these meant to be put together?

Thanks!

In print they are one book. But PB's don't do well with multiple datatypes, and so I have compiled them as separate Logos "books", but of the same series. I don't have it all in front of me right now, but if I recall correctly, the 4 parts are:

1) Apostolic Fathers

2) Justin's 1st Apology

3) Athenagoras's Plea

4) Selections from Irenaeus' Against Heresies.

I have released updated editions of the middle part, and have started working on the 1st...

Thanks Ken! The page numbers are throwing me, I suspect putting them together has problems since the page numbers would conflict. Ill wait and see what you think as you work on your excellent effort some more eventually!
