Proclaim App - Android on Tablet

Hey guys, it had been a couple weeks since I was able to use the android app.  The "control" portion is too slow to be usable except for during the sermon.  This is also the time where I need to see the "notes" field so I can control the screen appropriately.  Since the program doesn't provide a good way without a 3rd monitor, I've been using the app.

Well, last week I fired it up and the ability to see the notes on the android app is *GONE*!  What the heck guys?  You don't let me use that on the phone, but now it's going on the tablet too.

What's going on here?  Hardware is 2nd gen Nexus 7 tablet running v5.0.2 of Android.

Thanks,

Keith

    Hey Keith,

Slide control should be back to normal.  We had issues the past the couple of weekends after relocating some servers to Seattle that negatively impacted the way we handle traffic and slowed things down for everyone during peak usage.

I'm investigating the issue with your notes not appearing.  I'll follow up shortly.

    Sorry for the troubles,

    Ish

Ok thanks.  I'll wait to hear about notes.

FYI, what you call "normal" slide control timing (or what has been normal) is not adequate for exclusive usage of the app for control.  It still takes a couple seconds to change a slide.  This is not adequate during songs/hymns.  It just takes too long to go out via a web connection to a server and back again.  It will need to be (guessing here on an exact number) less than 100ms.  Once you get direct connection via local LAN, that should be doable.

We just published an update on the Google Play store, it should be available within the next few hours.  There's a bug in one of the libraries we use that reports the Nexus 7 as being a phone when you use Android 5.0+.  Basically, you were seeing what a phone user would see instead of what you should have seen as a tablet user.  The update should be limited to tablet users on newer versions of Android (the tablet fix is the only functional change).

I noticed some alignment issues with the quick screens layout on Android 5.0 while investigating this.  We wanted to get the tablet fix out before the weekend, but the alignment issues will vanish when we ship the reworked Android remote.

    Hey Ish,

I've noticed a bug with the new update on my Samsung Tab 4 10.1". With the app up and running, if the screen auto rotates it shuts down. If it switch to a different mode say to notes or one of the others it will sometimes shut down as well.

Just thought I'd let you know. I appreiciate everything you guys are doing to make things better. I'm greatly looking forward to the app made for the tablet. [:D]

Ok, got the update and it does fix the issue I was having.  However, I am seeing the same issue that Richard mentions where, if you rotate (it happens accidentally a lot since I use it more flat), the program crashes.

On the phone/tablet note, why do you guys insist on telling us how to use it depending on phone/tablet.  Let *ME* decide.  If you guys want to default to a certain mode based on device type, fine, but let me tell it different.  Most phones have the resolution to be able to display the same info as tablets albeit smaller.  Let me decide if it works in that mode or not.

Sorry about this all, a new build has been pushed to the Google Play store with the rotation fix.  The rotation fix is the only change.

If you don't see the update by the time you need to go live today (it can take a few hours for the app to update on Google Play) and you're seeing the crash on your device, you should be able to open the remote in the orientation you desire and set the orientation lock to prevent it from accidentally rotating.

The update is now live on Google Play.  Note that you'll only see it for tablet devices running Android 4.4+ (same as the previous update).  Smaller devices and devices on older versions of Android didn't suffer from the layout bug described above and never received the previous update.  Basically, if you see the update on the Play store, accept it.  If you don't, you don't need it.

It seems that the lasted update (version 1.1.12.162) for my Nexus 7 runing android 5.0.2 is causing the slides to be stretched to the point that you cannot read everything on it (screenshot below). Also, during my sermon tonight I noticed that the app froze a few times being unresponsive for a few seconds. It would not respond when pressing the arrow or even sliding my finger over the slide. After a few attempts it changed. It was very strange because the wireless connection and the internet were working well.

I have to say that it really disrupted the focus of everyone, especially when trying to emphasize an important part. Please let me know if there is anything I can on my end.

    Thank you and God bless!

    Hi Christopher,

We're aware of quite a few layout bugs like this one when running the current version of the remote on Android 5.0+.  While we work on getting the new Android remote ready for release with full Android 5 support, you can switch to using the notes view or the full screen views (the 2nd and 3rd buttons to the right of the Proclaim logo) to get around the slide clipping issue.

    Hi Ish,

Thank you for getting back to me and for your suggestion. I haven't used the notes view or the full screen view during a service. I'll test them today and try tomorrow during our service. I'm looking forward to the new Android remote.

Thank you for all you and your team do to help us share God's Word and praise His name!

    Have a blessed Easter!
