Windows to Mac

I'm thinking about joining the Mac universe but I don't know how Logos handles that. Would it be like starting over, or could I just migrate everything to my new computer? I'm using Logos 6.

I searched for a thread that addressed this issue, but only found something that was about 5 years old. If this is covered somewhere I would be grateful if someone could direct me to the right info.

Logis 6 and Macs work well together. Some years back since my wife was running a Mac Lab she convinced me to try one. It took me a few days to transition. Thereafter all I can say us that I was glad me wife talked me into trying one. I'm not going back.

If possible I would get SSD drive and 16 mg of RAM. Logis 6 IMO will function better this way. I personally would maximize the size if the drive as well, as my libray is rather large ....

I went from 30 years of PCs to a Mac a few months ago. Logos works just fine on the mac, just like it does on a pc (to me, I'm not a big power user either, but I use it every day). I have been so glad to come over to the mac universe, after belittling it for years. I am not looking back and have no regrets.

I switched to a Mac about three years ago and didn't have to repurchase anything. Aside from a very large download, the process was fairly seamless. I also haven't had any major performance issues with the software. Mac and Logos has been a good experience (so far).

I think your basic question has been answered... My advice: If you have reasons to switch outside of Logos, by all means do so. I am a Mac Addict and love using them. If your primary computer use is Logos, it might be better to stick with windows. The two platforms are at <near> parity. Most bugs are cross platform (oh joy), but some are platform specific. There are probably a few more mac-specific bugs in logos, but there are windows only bugs as well.

On the other hand, Macs have much less bugs in general, so it is easier to put up with ones in Logos. [:P]

Wondrous Grace gave you some good advice that you should probably purchase an SSD. In my case, I purchased an early 2013 iMac with Fusion drive and have been pleased with its performance. My experience may be colored somewhat by the fact that I did purchase the fastest machine then available.

BTW: I disagree with Bama—something I seldom do. Even if your primary purpose for an new computer is primarily Logos, I would still advise switching.

I, sadly, would have to disagree with Alabama also [:S]. More happily, I do agree with Jack [:O].

I currently work with Logos 6 across both PC and Mac and confirm that the performance across platforms (for me at least) is so close as to be indistinguishable. In fact, if anything, the performance via Mac is preferable (more responsive). Obviously, this will be attributable (largely or in part) to the difference in hardware. SSDs appear to deliver real improvements in performance for many users (my Mac has a SSD whereas my PC is a 7,200 HD).

I would further add that, in my opinion, the overall experience using a Mac is vastly superior to any PC I have worked with (and my last five PCs have been 'power/gaming PCs'). I intend (in the next few weeks) to abandon PC completely and switch to the iMac 5k (alongside my MBA2011).

I stand by my comment, but perhaps it would be better if I were stronger in saying: If you use your computer EXCLUSIVELY for Logos. In my opinion, once you are in the app, what's the difference? It is everything outside of the app which made me switch to Mac.

I moved to a Macbook from a Windows 8 machine and find it runs really well. I'm runnjng Mavericks.

Can someone tell me if the issue Logos 6 had with Yosemite now resolved. It was recommended when I upgraded to Logos 6 by the sales rep, to stick with Mavericks until the Logos 6 issues with Yosemite had been ironed out.

Am I safe to allow the Yosemite upgrade to happen now?

I think so... I haven't experienced the issue in a long while. I also haven't performed a full reinstall either. Software and resource updates work as expected for me.

Alabama - doesn't this require relatively recent versions of the Logos software to be running? Not sure exactly which service release this was fixed in but I think it was resolved by 6.1

The issues with Yosemite have been addressed. We needed Apple to come out with an improved download method, which we then implemented as an optional Terminal command to test it out, and made baseline in 6.0b. All versions since then should work just fine on Yosemite.

I am late to the conversation but went from RISC OS via Windows to the Mac.

The move to the Mac came when I realised that with Virus Software, Malware Scans, and any and everybody trying to hijack my browser I was spending more time maintaining the computer than actually doing any work with it.

The Mac doesn't get switched off - rarely ever needs rebooted - (please do not get inveigled into add ons that the cowboys will try and sell you) run the native operating system for a year before deciding that it works just fine and you don't need any of the 'fairy dust'.

Pages - (free) with your new machine will replace Word.

Numbers (free) with your new machine will replace Excel

Keynote (free) with your new machine will replace Powerpoint.

With all the spare time you will gather you can spend more time on the forums and still do the same amount of work.

I run Logos 6 exclusively on a Mac. It runs well, even on my aging equipment. Pretty much all you need to do is download this free engine on your Mac, sign in, and watch your library and settings appear magically (after hours of downloading and indexing, that is!). :-)

I'm the exception. My most recent computer purchase was a Surface Pro 3 and it is now my primary mobile computer. It runs Logos fine, but it also handles other software great.

If you're mostly concerned with Logos, then don't bother switching unless you just want to and can afford it. Macs are more expensive. Window runs fine and Windows 10 will be a huge improvement when they get it running well.

If you have another reason for switching to Mac, then you will acclimate fairly quickly. They both behave enough alike that it's just about a 30 day acclimation process. That's how long it took me.

I (figuratively) hear what you are saying Kevin and wonder if you might address the elephant in the room. The one major piece of software that I found didn't run well on 'Windows' was the anti-virus software. It seemed to need a lot of attention and took up more processing power than Logos during an index. My pretty expensive and quick (for the time) computer was crippled by the fact that everything had to go through this anti-virus bottle neck.

And when I did have problems all that happened was that the anti-virus people blamed the manufacture, the manufacturer blamed Microsoft, and Microsoft blamed the anti-virus people.

In my work environment, people floated between PC's and Mac's as their only/primary machine based upon their primary needs. Individuals would come to the University firmly on one side or another ... but within a year and a half you couldn't tell what their original preference was ... but you could tell a lot about the kind of work they did. Has that changed?

I've only been on Logos since 2011 so I can't speak for the performance before hand. I have not experienced any issue with anti-virus (3rd party internet security) software and Logos since I started. Nor any issue with the other basic software I use in recent memory ... Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, IE, iTunes, etc. It runs in the background unobtrusively and unattended. I know Microsoft has basic protection (Windows Defender) that I believe is enabled by default, that provides basic protection, al la Gatekeeper in OSX. Not exactly the same but gives you a similar comparison. Also unobtrusive.

I don't see anything near the significance of platform issues anymore. I switch back and forth between my main Mac and a trio of PCs and there's nothing all that different. The overall Mac feel is better, but you are now heavily locked into whatever Apple puts in the box unless you buy something used.
