If a someone is helping remotely with my presentation, do I have to be on line in proclaim for someone to make changes? Just trying to protect my work.

No - imagine that your Presentation is not on your computer at all. The Presentation's main residence is somewhere in the 'clouds' (where I can assure you there are many mansions for it to reside in).
You have a copy on your computer- when you make changes - moments later the 'the real presentation' in the clouds is changed to match.
Your trusted friend, who you invited into your group, (and who, should you wish, you can remove from your group) can also get a copy of the presentation - their copy will match the one in the cloud even if you are making changes simultaneously. You can make changes at any time. They can make changes at any time.
