QUESTION: What features of Verbum would not be avilable only having the Ctechism Collection?

I'm trying to help and encourage others in getting into Verbum but the usual barrier for most is cost.  I have been suggesting to them just to get started by trying the Catechism Collection.  Having said that I really don't know what specific behavior and functionality of Verbum to "demo" to them to explain what is there and what is not.

Can someone help me with that?

I remember seeing the original version of this video and being blown away at how powerful the Catechism Collection could be.  Take a look and it might give you some ideas.

I believe it is very similar to Verbum Core only....

The Verbum 6 core engine is the software platform that you need to view and interact with Verbum resources on your desktop. The core engine delivers the Verbum 6 user interface and the features that are not dependent on a dataset to work.

Features Included in the Core Engine

    • Ask the Author
    • Bible Text Only (Visual Filter)
    • Collections
    • Context Menu (Right Click Menu)
    • Groups
    • Inline Search
    • Labels
    • Media Search
    • Notes
    • Prayer Lists
    • Reading Plans
    • Send to Kindle
    • Wikipedia

I would hope that the "Catholic Topical Index" was included.

I wonder.  The Catechism package predates the Catholic Topical Index, so I'm not sure that it is.

This makes a nice intro package.  It is cheaper than the cost of a print Catechism and Bible together (on average), and it includes a lot more.  It's easier to sell people on than some of the larger packages. :)

I am Anglican and would have no qualms recommending this package as an inexpensive way to get into Logos the Vatican II documents are wonderful and the Catechism provides a most useful compendium  of Christian teaching and interpretation. And while Christians may differ on some topics and interpretations it is a good starting place.

I know I'm a bit late to the conversation, but just to weigh in with some additional clarity: the video is definitely what we recommend highlighting if you are talking to others about the Catechism Collection. Dan is correct that the Catechism Collection, unlike a base package, only features the Verbum 6 core engine. It is literally a collection of 9 books with no hidden datasets or resources to bolster the software.

Things like the Catholic Topical Index and Saints Database are additional content and thus are not included in the core engine.

A few things not explicitly mentioned in Dan's post above:

    - The Cited By tool will work with all the books you have (even if you only have the 9 in the CCC Collection.) This can actually be pretty enlightening even with a small collection like this, as demonstrated in the video.

    - Community Notes just require that you log in to Faithlife.

    - Liturgical Layout will sort of work, but will be missing a lot of resources: the sidebar section will be present on the home page and clicking it will open the lectionary and the Bible.

Hope that helps! If you have any other questions about specific features, please post them here, and I will do my best to clarify if and how they would appear for a CCC owner.

    Thanks for spreading the word!

I started out buying the Catechism Collection in 2012. My perception at that time was that the Logos Base Packages were too expensive and I could not justify the expense. But at $42.36 [the cost at that time] I had no problem investing in the CCC collection.

After using the CCC collection for a few months my perception of Logos changed. I still believed that the Logos Base Packages were too expensive BUT, now I could justify the expense because after using the program I had understood how powerful the tool was and the benefits it gave me.

I decided to upgrade to the lowest base package but did not have the budget to purchase it outright so I took advantage of the Logos payment plan and paid for it over time in monthly installments that I could manage. After I finished paying for it I upgraded to the next level, and so on.

It would be a good idea if Logos promoted the CCC collection to catholic Religious Ed Departments in all parishes with a campaign similar to the one being offered to catholic schools at this time. This would create a significant base of entry level users that will likely upgrade over time like I did.

Thanks for sharing Robert.  That other Catholics who are looking at Verbum could see your post.  Thoughtful approach and good idea.

Maybe Alex will see and figure something out.

    Robert,

I'm so glad you liked the Catechism Collection and continued to invest in Verbum. That's exactly why we created the Catechism Collection in the first place - as a less expensive entry point to our software.

I agree that we could do more with it (and I hope we will), but in the meantime, please share your experience with your friends. Even if we run a powerfully compelling campaign, we can never carry the same weight as a friend.

Thanks, again, for believing in us and giving us a try. And thank you, also, for sharing your feedback. We read and consider all of it, even if we can't always act on it.

    God bless you!

Saints (Bellingham, WA: Verbum, 2013) & Catholic Topical Index could easily be added to the collection making it a bit more useful without giving away too much to take away from the desire to get more into Verbum by purchasing a package.
