    The big question I have regarding the Companion is what improvements it may bring when linking to source documents?  I already have the Vatican Documents, Dezinger, Papal Documents, Aquinas, Church Fathers, etc.  Some of the references in the Catechism don't seem to be tagged to the source which I already have.  (I'll provide an example when I get a chance.)

    Anyway ... the value add in my case is the question I'm trying to think through now.

    I haven't looked at it in print, but the Companion probably has solid, readable, modern translations of all things that require translation. Depending on the make up of your personal Verbum library, this may well be a worthwhile improvement.

    That is a good question so I went and pulled my copy to try and find some reference to an older document I could compare between what I have in Verbum and what is printed in the Companion. 

    EDIT:  I would say by way of background that the printed Companion contains many scripture passages that are reprinted from the RSV and NRSV as they are with the Catechism itself.  Vatican II, Papal Encyclicals from the 20th century, the 1983 CIC are modern English and are printed as such in the Campion, as you would expect.  You said that already. [:$]

    For the one example of the older document reference I went to paragraph 1766 (just happened to be where I left off in a previous study session) and footnote 42, St. Augustine, On the Trinity.

         Compendium (pg. 628):  "Behold again, and see if thou canst.  Thou certainly dost not love ..."

         Verbum: "Behold, and again see if you can. Certainly you love only ..."  [CUA Fathers of the Church]

              Or parallel resource:  "Behold again, and see if thou canst. Thou certainly dost not love ..."  [Schaff, NPNF-CE1.3] 

    At least for this example the older translation is what is in the printed Compendium.  That may not be the case throughout.
