Logos 6.3 (6.3.0.0038) is available for download.

If you have automatic updates turned on, 6.3 will be downloaded automatically the next time your system checks for updates. To install it right away, enter the Update Now command.

Release Notes

This release features:

  • Logos Now: Added Sense and Biblical Entity options to the Concordance.
  • Logos Now: The Grammars section has been completely redone, and a Grammatical Constructions section has been added.
  • Resource updates and downloads no longer require a restart. Downloaded resources now appear in Library as they're downloaded, and the "Recently updated" notification on the Home Page will automatically update to list resources as they're downloaded.
  • Updated the Library panel for editing/tagging multiple resources at once, giving better control over unifying tags, bulk-editing or bulk-deleting tags, etc.

I've been running the beta, and I've got to say this is a great update, even for non-Logos Now users. It is even better for Now customers of course, but everyone gets the benefit of not having to restart when resources are updated/added, which is a much-needed improvement. Loads of bug fixes and a few performance updates for everyone, too. Thanks, Dylan and the team!

[Y] Very excited about this! Restarting logos every time a new resource comes in has been really annoying lol. I’m glad that is now a thing of the past, it’s about time! [:)] Way to go, guys!

I am wondering, is there a way to look at a desktop install of Logos/Verbum and tell if that account includes Logos/Verbum Now? I know at the moment one could look for features like Concordance etc., but at some point features may be purchased in an upgrade and it might be harder to tell if the account includes a Now subscription without really sifting through timing of specific features being added.

At this point there is no specific UI to display this information. We've been looking at options for how to show this information.

    Hey Mark,

I have not had a chance to update and use the new update yet. Can you tell me the how the Logos Now resources are better and how to best use them? I heard that they were making them better, but have not had a chance to look at them and would like a preview of what I can expect. Thanks alot. I know as Pastors we are busy and I appreciate your help.

So I'm a little confused. It downloaded the update and a bunch of resources and it installed. It's currently indexing those resources but I have a message at the top saying that "Resources are ready to be added to your library. Updates will be added when the application is restarted."

I waited until it finished indexing and then restarted and then it again said that it was indexing but I don't think it actually did anything. I guess I'll have to wait until next time to see if it doesn't ask to be restarted.

Resources are now downloaded and installed without (normally) needing to restart the application. However, if the resource is in use when it gets updated, then the notification is displayed letting you know that you'll need to restart in order for the update to occur. This update happens during the startup phase before the main window becomes visible. After a resource is updated, the indexer will run to account for the modified resource. It sounds to me like things are working correctly.

My understanding is that this is a one-time issue that may occur when you upgrade to 6.3 It should not happen with future updates. If it does please let us know so we can investigate further.

Is it just me or did this update just wipe out smart tags / actions in Microsoft Word (2007 & 2013)?  It was working, then once the update installed and after I restarted my computer twice smart tags are no longer listed in the Microsoft Add-ons as even an option!  Nothing in the release notes seems to refer to this feature being removed.  I heavily rely on this feature for my lecturing and I'm lecturing tonight!  Anyone else experiencing this?  Am I missing something?  Any help?

    Thanks

This was a known issue during beta testing. I thought FL mentioned somewhere that it would be fixed by release?

As Randy mentioned, this was an issue during testing, but it was supposed have been fixed— https://community.logos.com/forums/t/104760.aspx

You should create a new thread for this issue and put BUG in the title.

Smart tags was broken due to our new install methods. It will be fixed in a forthcoming SR. I'm sorry we didn't communicate this clearly the release notes.

I cannot start Logos with this update. I'm running on my Dell Venue 8 Pro on 32-bit Windows 8.1. I've tried the Ctrl-Start method and moving my Index and User documents for rebuilding, but none of that allows me to start the program.

    • I'm running Verbum 6.1 SR-3 (6.1.0.0038), but "Update now" reports "No Updates Available" / "No updates were found"
    • "set update channel to stable" and "set update channel to default" gave the same message.

Any more ideas if Update now fails?  I'm running Verbum 6.1 SR-3 (6.1.0.0038), but:

    1. "Update now" reports "No Updates Available" / "No updates were found"
    2. "set update channel to stable" and "set update channel to default" gave the same message.
    3. "Update resources" gave the same result (SineNomine's suggestion, although wouldn't that be limited to, e.g. books, instead of the engine?)
    4. I had "Automatically download updates" set to No, but I've now reverted it to Yes.

If I'm honest, I don't (yet) get a huge amount of use out of Logos Now. The Media Browser and Concordance Tool are both useful when I need them, but need them often. (We don't have a data projector in church, so I really need media.) The Logos Web App I will use, but at the moment it provides no more functionality than biblia.com. And I'm not really a grammarian, so the three datasets (whilst interesting) are not great value of me.

That said, as I use Logos heavily, even though I don't use these things often, I think they're worth $80/year - particularly when I hope more things might be added that chime more specifically with me.

I agree, although those technical things in Logos Now are nice, but to most users they means squat (nothing).

The Web App on the other hand can be the most useful to ALL users.

I doubt you use grammars and concordance everyday, unless you're in school (Master degree) or writing complicated dissertation.

Media Browser is nice but there are too much fluffs. Too many pictures that are just taken multiple times for test shots, and they just dump them in Media Browser. They didn't even change the file names for the pictures, they just export the jpeg out of their camera and upload them in Media Browser. Heck, I don't even feel that those "fluffs" were meant for Media Browser to begin with. It seems like it just came from someone's camera. If you ever shoot an SLR camera, you should know what I'm talking about.

You can fix your SmartTags manually. Basically if you have 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Office:

    • open a Command Prompt (CMD) and enter  regsvr32 “%LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\6.3.0.0038\L4SmrtTg.dll”
    • open Registry Editor (RegEdit), find “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{81490292-5570-4D02-A2AC-7B828DBD0A8A}\1.0\0\win64” and ensure  the path to LogosCom.exe  is “C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Logos\6.3.0.0038\LogosCom.exe”

Note 1: Your Logos folder might be "Logos5" or "Logos4"   (without the quotes)

Note 2: "6.3.0.0038" is the folder that used to be called "System" (but for this release only)

    An alternative, easier method is:

    1. Open File Explorer to the place where the Logos folder is e.g. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos
    2. Create a copy of the 6.3.0.0038 folder and rename it as System e.g. copy 6.3.0.0038, paste it and rename it.

If Smart Tags worked before they will work now you have a System folder.

Have the default Hebrew and Greek fonts been changed?

When I first loaded 6.3 the Hebrew font was very different, but changing it and then changing it back fixed it. Doing the same with the Greek font doesn't have the same effect and it still looks slightly different from before.

I too have had the "Resources are ready to be added to your library. Updates will be added when the application is restarted." message. Several restarts failed to make any difference (except that the number in the blue circle increased to 2 from 1). However, I have just purchased one book and it has downloaded, installed and indexed without restart.

Some investigation has shown that two resources in .lbxlls format are sitting in my Logos/Data/xxxxxx/ResourceManager/Downloaded folder. The same resources in .logos4 format are already in my library. Closing Logos, deleting these .lbxlls resources and restarting has made no difference. The blue circle is now showing 1 again.

I just happened to be playing with this, this morning. In addition with what was said here, set update channel to either beta or default used to trigger a search for updates in the top right corner, it does not anymore with 6.3. Not sure when that changed, I believe it was this release because I would have noticed it when I went off of beta once 6.2 was out. To me that seems important (maybe it's being done silently?), as a change could require some new resources to download (especially moving to beta).

Thanks Randy!  I additionally deleted the logs before reproducing the problem (to reduce log bulk/clutter), and when I examined Verbum.log (searched for "Update now" and then started reading), that clarified the problem enough for me.

Faithlife decided to do away with the \Logos\System folder in order to facilitate background installation of Logos/Verbum. An installation of v6.3 should therefore have removed the System folder and replaced it with a version-specific folder i.e. 6.3.0.0038. The previous one is retained e.g. 6.3.0.0037 and any other is removed (so there are only two version-specific folders).

I guess the installer didn't recognise that you'd installed them manually, and assumed the previous installer had done it. I accept it's a pain, but it won't happen again.

Thanks for the link, Mark. But why remove user-installed fonts in the first place?! The SIL fonts are fonts I and a number of SIL colleagues had installed independently of Logos. It's a bit of a pain to have to do that again...

Unfortunately, we don't know whether a font was installed by our install process or a user. This means we cannot make a decision to keep user installed fonts but remove fonts installed by an earlier version of Logos.

We understand that this will cause pain for some users during the 6.3 update and have tried to mitigate that pain with our support document which helps users find and install the fonts they need to have access to in other applications. It's worth noting that we've recently included a link to the support page in the 6.3 release notes.

I'm sorry that you need to re-install fonts you had already manually installed. We do not expect this to be an issue in future updates to the software.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll pass it along.

I just want to say that so far, this update is working great! I've added resources twice without having to restart and nary a hitch.

I was having a problem with updates before--something is a little off with my Windows BITS, and I'd have to reboot multiple times before I could get Logos to download anything. This update fixed that problem.

    Good job!
