Accessibility of the bible software
Hi all, I have a student who is asked to buy the Stutgart Study Bible for his study theology at the university of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Thet student is blind and works with screenreader software and a Braille display. Is the software accessible and usable for blind people? Regards, Henk

There are a number of blind and visually-impaired users who successfully use Logos Bible Software with the Libronix DLS 3 engine. They use different screenreader programs, such as JAWS and Window Eyes.

I have a blind Pastor friend here in my town that has used Logos3 for years. I don't think there is anything specific in the program for the visually impaired. I know he just ordered Logos4 and is starting to work with it.
Like Melissa said, most folks are using programs that work with Windows in general, across all programs.

Hi Terry,
We do have blind users who are using Logos 4. The Read Aloud feature has been useful to some. We are still working on some issues with screenreaders that have been reported. I always recommend learning the Keyboard Shortcuts: http://www.logos.com/L4/training/keyboardshortcuts.

I am blind and have written scripts for L3 and the JAWS screen reader which I have given to other JAWS users. The only part of L4 I have been able to use is the reading function. so if you just need a book read to you you can use L4 since most of the other stuff can't be read with JAWS. The ribbon that is across the top is seen as going down the left side. The dro pdown boxes contain only buttons that say "untitled 2", etc. When doing a seerach including in the library we get a list view with a list that doesn't tell us any good information but is the same wording on each line.

Do you have any intention of creating scripts for L4? I just purchased the software a few weeks ago, and it is not very accessible as you said. Maybe it is possible to download L3 for now.

Dean, I teach basic Logos 3 use in a seminary setting and have just been contacted by a blind student who is taking a Greek class in our seminary. He uses Logos 3 with JAWS and is looking for help in using Logos 3 with his reader. Would you be willing to correspond with him via email, or suggest a way he may get some help? I plan to meet with him next Tuesday to try to give him some pointers, such as shortcuts.

I just e-mailed Logos about purchasing logos bible software. They said I would have to purchase Logos 4 but can download the logos 3 engine. I would like to get your e-mail address so I can get your scripts that you wrote, and I would also like to ask you if you would mind sending me tips for using the software. I've never used it before, but am very interested in using it for personal bible study. Thank you!

Hi,
I just purchased Logos 4 and downloaded the Libronix 3G engine as well. Not having a lot of luck using either with JAWS 11 and Windows 7 Starter. JAWS shows a blank screen when I run Logos 4, although visually the content and menus are there. This means that I can't search for content or read with the Read Aloud feature, which it appears others have working.
Also, I'm having trouble reading content and navigating in Libronix 3G. Not all of the shortcut keys work, and the Help system isn't very accessible since the standard F6 doesn't toggle between the navigation pane and the displayed text. Also, when I open a book, I can read it with the Braille display normally, but the only way I can use speech is if I use the JAWS cursor to review the on-screen portion of the document. No luck using speech during Say All, and no speech output when reviewing with the PC cursor. This makes navigation cumbersome. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheryl, I can't answer your question, but you may want to change your forum user name. Using your email address as your display name makes it easy for search bots to find you and harvest your email address for spam (etc.).

One of the greatest things that Logos has done for me and others with whom I have become acquainted is enable us to study texts in Hebrew and Greek. I have been looking forward to seeing whether I can access any of your Syriac material at some point--this depends on whether I can develop a braille representation for Syriac in Unicode and whether your Syriac material is represented in Unicode. If accessibility of Logos 4 is limited to using the read aloud feature, blind users sill not be able to access any of this rich content. Please do not take this tremendous step backward. It is truly important to us that Logos remain a usable resource in all senses of the word--some of us are not only readers but scholars.

Thank you for your post. We have been making improvements to accessibility in Logos 4 with screen readers, and we will continue to do so. Many of the improvements have been to the Search panel in the Windows version. Be sure to enter the command 'Set Accessibility to Yes' in the Command box (press Alt+D to place the cursor in the Command box) and restart Logos 4 to activate accessibility features. Once that has been done, use the Alt key to activate the main menu bar. Currently, to read Resource text, the Read Aloud (Ctrl+R ) feature needs to be used. This will be limited to English unless you own the Greek Audio New Testament, and then Read Aloud will read the Greek text in Greek Bibles.
We will providing more information on accessibility functionality to customers in the near future, and as we make additional improvements, we will update that information.

If I can manage to get into Logos 4 in the first place, it will be interesting to explore this. However, I should point out that libraries often extend to more than Bibles. I use mine to access Greek and Hebrew grammars and lexicons, often stopping to look up unfamiliar words. Frankly, I am a very poor user of Greek audio--it is extremely important for me to see the material in braille. It is really not a good assumption that audio is the best method for a blind person to use when dealing with biblical languages, particularly in terms of exegesis. It is important to keep in mind how people are using your software--blind people are using in the same variety of ways that sighted people do. Also, this feature excludes anyone who is deafblind from using your product.

Hello,
Does anyone still have the Jaws scripts for Libronix 3? I had to reinstall Logos/libronix 3 on my new Windows 7 computer. Unfortunately, the Script file I have doesn't seem to work. Maybe the Scripts aren't compatible with Windows 7? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is there any way to copy the text of a book in Libronix and paste it into Word? I would like to use Logos for personal Bible study, but it would also be nice to paste the texts of book into Microsoft Word so that I can download and read them on my BrailleNote.

If you select the text you are interested in and right-click on it, you will find options to "Copy" or "Copy to Clipboard".
These should enable you to paste into Word

I have them and they should work in Windows 7. They need to go in a different folder--JAWS moved some things around for Windows 7. Where should I send them?

You can use the export feature to get portions of text, but it is not possible to copy a whole book into word or select and copy the whole text of a book.
