TIP of the day - oldies weekend: Using the timeline

How would one use the TIMELINE Tool for, say, locating the time [and events during that time] of Micah's prophecy?

Good question...very easy...go to timeline, type in the "filter" command box your term ("Micah")nitshows up as the only entry on the timeline...click that entry and you get this...

The prophet Micah was called around 700 BC to proclaim judgment against Jerusalem. Micah’s message centered on the exploitation of the poor, unethical merchants, and corrupt civil and religious leaders. Because of the people’s lack of covenantal faithfulness, God promised to judge the nation. The book of Micah begins with a promise of judgment, first to surrounding nations and then to Judah and her leaders (chapters 1–3). The middle section is a promise of restoration and a coming kingdom led by the messianic King (chapters 4–5). Because of this hope of future restoration, in the final section of the book (chapters 6–7), Micah pleads with the people to repent of their sin and turn back to the Lord.

You can then stay where you are in the timeline...clear the filter, and see all the surrounding historical data located around this event.

You could type in a date range (in Micah's case 750-700 BC) Select All at the top right of the timeline and that will bring up a host of events and date ranges. If you hover and click on those entries, you will have the ability to select resource articles in your library discussing that event.

You can also search for Micah by:

1. Open the Timeline (Tools>Timeline)

2. Hitting ctrl+f (or command+f on mac)

3.Typing "Micah" into the search box

This will take you to any event containing the word Micah, while keeping all other events visible. This will give you a visual of all the events surrounding Micah, as well as allow you to link to resources about any of those events.

1. You can use the filter on the toolbar to filter events to show events with your filter text

"Micah" shows one event at 700BC (note: clear the filter to show all events at that date range)

Clicking that event provides a popup with links to Timeline tagged references in resources from your library. If you follow the link that resource will open (or navigate if already open) to that location.

 

2. You could click find (Ctrl+F) in the Timeline to show the find bar and this should let you use the arrows to navigate through the Timeline. Unfortunately something is wrong and we don't 'find' Micah, but try it for other events you are looking for.

 

3. If you already know the date you can simply type the date into the Date text area on the toolbar and the Timeline will goto that date. You can also type Date Ranges into the field (33bc - 33ad), or (Sept 2001), Date Range adjusts visible dates to that range, date just centers on that date.

 

4. You could click the "Fit" button to navigate to an "era", this "fits" the date range to fit the width of the era. Clicking the +/- button adjusts the visible date range.
