Looking for any suggestions on teaching logos 6

Hello All!

Several pastors at my church have Logos 6 (a couple silvers and a gold package) but... Don't know how to use it! i was talking with one of them the other day and it struck me that he had such a great library, but no idea how to impliment any of it! He was basically using it as an e-reader for his bible.

i I quickly took his laptop and showed him a thing or two and they asked me to have a logos lunch tutorial with a few others in the office. We are meeting this week for about an hour and I wanted to know if anyone had any input or ideas on how to get these guys acquainted with the basics of the software. Another lunch may follow, but for now, I figure I'd get them leaving with the basic and most important functionalities so they don't feel like they've wasted their money.

I planned on covering the passage guide, library, help them prioritize their library, and then maybe show them What the Factbook is all about. I was trying to figure out if I wanted to get into the exegetical guide and/or a word study, but how much can you cover in an hour!? I'm certainly no Morris Proctor.

A great place to start would be for everyone to purchase Logos 6: Training Manual Volumes 1 & 2 (Digital)

I keep mine pinned right to the toolbar for easy access. They are certainly worth it to me and they're done very well.

I just purchased those Friday and it's been helpful in thinking through what to share. Pinning it to the toolbar? That's a great idea! Funny I didn't think of that earlier. Consider it done.

If if I was to print a couple pages for the guys and hand them out, would that infringe on copyright?

I think I'd start by showing the Go bar on the Home Page and what happens when you type in a reference or topic.

Show how to choose their favorite Bible if they haven't done so.

In Library, show how to prioritize top Bibles, commentaries, and dictionaries.

Show the Giuides.

Demonstrate the right click menu options (if they are unaware of them), esp. the Bible Word Study.

Show the Information Panel.

Show how to create a Note file and a Clipping file.

Show how to save a custom layout.

Tell them there's a lot more they can learn by watching the videos online.

Mark, sounds good! I feel like I'm tracking my thoughts in the right direction.

Lynden, definitely! i think I may send an email with links to the Logos Pro videos and maybe a couple Faithlife todays as well. I may search the forum threads to see if there's a particularly helpful one for newbies. I'm trying to be careful not to overwhelm them, I remember a recent thread where one of our new users was put off with the vastness of the software. my goal is to present to them and let their desire to know the program lead the discussion.

The Home Page can sometimes easily be overlooked if they haven't personailzed what shows up.

I have led quite a few different Logos training seminars for people all across the board; from lay people to Greek and Hebrew scholars. My biased opinion about the ideal training content you can cover in an hour that covers the basics of the software includes the following three things:

1) Organizing and prioritizing your library (You can easily build a collection based upon this same content)

2) Building custom layouts

3) Basic and Bible Searching

There are many other things that you could potentially cover in this time, but given you only have an hour, there are only so many things that can be covered. Sacrifices must be made! A hour goes extremely fast! I feel these three things are the most foundational pieces to effectively using Logos and getting excited to learn more.

Thanks for your experienced opinion. I'll watch the web link for sure. It's good to know I work with these guys all the time and can always follow up with them. A camp logos trip in the future would be ideal (though not likely.) I'm wondering, does Logos/FL ever do on-site training for pastoral staff?

To to send the question into the forum, are there any Logos "Pros" that ever get together (esp in Southern California) that do unofficial trainings?
