Mark, I was thinking the same thing when I was looking at Rick's example for searching Figures of Speech.

We need a simple resource in Logos that functions like a glossary for search terms. It should be in Logos not online somewhere, like the wiki. Searching is one of Logos' strong points, but it has become impossible for me to keep up with.

I've reverse-engineered my datatype index, and discovered dozens more labels. I'm going to update my initial post, but it will take me a while to type it all up...

My list is as complete as I can make it now.

Several of these are dependent on datasets that are licensed either by Logos 6 base packages or through Logos Now. For example, the label Psalm is only licensed through the dataset delivered with Logos Now; it also mirrors the book-level categories available in the Psalm Explorer interactive, in the "Overview". (Note the Proverbs label [6.7 beta], which isn't listed in the current incarnation of your post, is also reflective of the Proverbs Explorer interactive). The Figures of Speech label is also delivered with Logos Now (6.7 beta as well). So documenting them in the general Logos 6 help file isn't the best place; it would be confusing because the labels simply aren't available to everyone who would be reading that documentation.

For labels that are tied to interactives (Psalms, Proverbs, and some upcoming stuff) the interactive will be the place where they are mentioned, in the "About" dialog (note: I think Psalms needs to be updated to reflect this, and Proverbs will hopefully be updated during the 6.7 beta cycle). Generally, faceted interactives like Proverbs Explorer allow for faceting/display of interesting information associated with the text, and many times this information could provide further utility by exposing it to search. Labels are the way to do this, and as interactives develop and continue, we will, where it makes sense, pair a label with an interactive (like Psalms and Proverbs Explorers) to expose categorization data for searching.

You are correct that there is a larger issue, and it is one that I know Eli is actively considering (because he and I have talked about it).

The search extensions are great, as they allow us to search much more data than we used to be able to. However, it's really hard to keep track of all the labels that Logos is using.

Where can I find a list of official labels?

Our strategy thus far has been to document search capabilities of a dataset within the dataset documentation resource for the dataset. It's not a perfect solution, of course, especially since we are still way behind on the backlog of documentation. We are making progress, slowly but steadily.

In the meantime, I've asked the Help team to add a quick and dirty listing of labels that can be searched in the Help resource.

Mark, don't waste time reverse-engineering your milestone indexes and posting the results, except as curiosity. It would be much easier if they were in one place. Just tag them in the help file as Logos Now Only feature, etc. This is another way to create interest; when people browse the help and see very specifically what can be accomplished by upgrading. A central list is better for everyone as long as it's labeled.

I don't agree with this. You already document features that are only available to people with certain base packages, such as syntax searching. As Randy says, it's much easier for us if it's all in one place. If you really don't want to do that, please considering at least having links in the help file to the Logos Now dataset documentation.

#facepalm ... nevermind, yes. Still, just because they're in the index doesn't mean they have (or are supposed to have) all the UI necessary to be searchable. We ferret away all kinds of data in the fulltext index to make various parts of the application work, sometimes with the intention of eventually making it visible to the search UI, and sometimes not.

For example, the fact that the Bible Book Guide labels appear in the information panel now as opposed to some point in the future is an unintended consequence of the recent overhaul of the Information tool. But now that they're exposed, we should take care to bring them up to functional parity.

But that at least explains why it's not searchable!

My suggestion is that the { character triggers an autocomplete menu, just as the @ character does in a morph search.

Logos would then list all the search extensions. When you choose a search extension the menu would expand to suggest the appropriate attributes, and you can click the ones you want. Where users had to type specific information, Logos could either insert blanks or placeholders. It would look something like this:

It may have some limitations (e.g. what if someone has hundreds of highlighting styles), but I think you could work around those by simply adding descriptive text to the suggestions, instead of every item from the list.

Coincidentally, we are working on the spec for just such a contraption (though it may look a little different than your mockup since I don't know how much secret knowledge of each label type we'll be able to pump into the software, but we'll see).

Actually, there may be a Target instead of a Source. For example, Mark 1:3 contains a Citation of Isaiah 40:3. So Mark 1:3 is marked with an Intertext label specifying Isaiah 40:3 as Source, and Isaiah 40:3 is marked as an Intertext specifying Mark 1:3 as Target.

Both Source and Target expect a Bible reference.

The only valid Relationship strings are Citation, Quotation, Allusion, and Echo.

Note that Corpus is always New Testament, but including corpus makes it easier to extend in the future with data from other corpora … [;)] You also should be able to get a look at the data in the "Other References" section of the Information Window.

I did notice one error. Under Other Datasets, and "Bible Books Supplemental Dataset", you have the property as "Comment" for each of the labels in that dataset. This property is in fact "Subcategory". I think you've confused it with the BookGuide label (which isn't documented in the help file), which does indeed have a property of "Comment". The BookGuide label isn't searchable.

The BookGuide label is delivered by the Bible Books Supplemental Dataset, but it is internal-only and not visible to (mere mortal) users, so we aren't planning to document it. You are correct that the other labels shipped by that same dataset (eg, "Background" and "Origin") have a Subcategory property rather than Comment. Oops! (I fixed that error; correct in the next update, whenever that is.)

Whatever you call it, that property isn't searchable right now because the BGC datatype reference it contains isn't searchable.

There's an open case for rearranging the labeling contained in this particular dataset to be better organized — the BGC dataset was one of the first label datasets we made, and our best practices have evolved since. There is also a case for making the BGC datatype searchable.

The specific examples used in Basic Search don't work in Bible Search, but some labels do work in Bible search (Intertext, Psalm, Figure of Speech). I'd expect at least some of those to be documented in the Bible Search hints.
